Frankie Knuckles meets Dave Pearce – 6 Mix 2014-04-04

<3 "Following the sad news of Frankie Knuckles’ passing, we repeat the 6 Mix from 2011 when Dave Pearce met the Godfather of house music to discuss his four decades in dance.
Knuckles began his career DJ-ing soul and disco records alongside infamous selector Larry Levan whilst studying textile design in Manhattan, New York. His reputation soon spread and he found himself playing at the Warehouse in Chicago in the mid 1980s, where his sets fusing bleeps, beats and bass – made with a drum machine bought from Derrick May – were credited with inventing an entire new genre of rhythmic music; house.
After the Warehouse folded in the early 1990s Frankie moved back to New York where he re-worked by tracks by Alison Limerick, Electribe 101 and had hits with anthemic tunes including The Whistle Song and Your Love. Since then, Frankie has carried on DJing around the world and remains a talismanic figure in electronic music.
In this two hour special, Frankie Knuckles reflects with Dave Pearce on his last 35 years in dance, telling the real story of how he pioneered the Chicago sound. He and Dave also reminisce about the time they spent in New York during the early 1990s and how house music has developed since.”

6 Mix 2012-11-30 25 Years of Shoom with Dave Pearce and DJ Danny Rampling

“Dave Pearce talks to DJ Danny Rampling about the 25th anniversary of his seminal acid house club night, Shoom.
One of the UK’s best-known club nights, Shoom was inspired by Rampling’s trip to Ibiza in the summer of 1987 with his friends Nicky Holloway, Trevor Fung and Paul Oakenfold. Inspired by the “Balearic” DJing style of legendary Ibiza selector Alfredo, who they heard play for the first time that summer, Rampling and his wife Jenni decided to create a club night similar to those they’d experienced on the White Isle in the UK. Shoom began in a south London warehouse in the autumn of 1987 and swiftly became the epicentre of a new genre of music known as “acid house” .
Alongside Holloway’s night The Trip, Oakenfold’s Spectrum night and the Hacienda in Manchester, Shoom bought acid sounds to a whole new audience and played a key role in the explosion of dance culture in the UK. Although it closed its doors for the final time in 1990, Shoom left a lasting legacy on UK dance culture, and inspired some of the biggest names in electronic music from Derrick May to David Guetta.
In this special 6 Mix, Dave Pearce talks to Rampling about Shoom, its legacy 25 years on, and plays the music which inspired and soundtracked the club.”

In this special programme, Dave Pearce and Slipmatt rewind the clocks to explore some of the biggest tunes that got dancefloors and muddy fields moving in the early 90s.”

6 Mix 2012-02-12 Dave Pearce and Paul Oakenfold

“In this special 6 Mix programme, Dave Pearce talks to Paul Oakenfold about his life in dance music.
For over three decades Oakenfold has been one of the leading forces in the dance music world, with an extensive career that lists events such as signing DJ Jazzy Jeff, being nominated for two Grammys and three world tours warming up for Madonna and U2.
After starting as a funk DJ in the late 1970s, Oakenfold relocated from London to New York to work as an A&R for Champion Records, which saw him working with artists such as DJ Jazzy Jeff, Salt N Pepa and The Beastie Boys.
In 1987 he travelled to Ibiza for the first time where he was inspired by the Balearic sound, taking the style back to the UK with him. In 1988 Perfecto Records was born and Paul’s ascent to dance world domination began. Here, he talks in depth to Dave Pearce about the influential music that has shaped his career.”

6 Mix 2011-08-28 40 Years of Philadelphia International with Dave Pearce

“Dave Pearce goes back to his soul-boy roots as he celebrates 40 years of Philadelphia International Records. Founded by writing and production duo Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff in 1971, the label became known for its trademark soulful disco sound, producing hits for The Three Degrees, McFadden & Whitehead and Teddy Pendergrass. Its catalogue became a staple of the British rare groove scene during the early 1980s and it also played an important role in the creation of house music, with DJs like Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles spinning their tunes in the legendary Paradise Garage. As the label enters its forth decade, Dave is joined by journalist Ralph Tee – author of ‘Who’s Who in Soul Music’ and compiler of ‘The Philadelphia International Box Set’ – to dig through some of its finest moments and forgotten gems, from The O’Jays to MFSB, via Lou Rawls, Dexter Wansel and Archie Bell & The Dells. Dave and Ralph also discuss the genesis of the Philly groove, its impact on dance music through the years and, how four decades on, its catalogue is being reworked for today’s dancefloors by artists like Dimitri from Paris.”

6 Mix 2011-07-10 Dave Pearce Meets Boy George

“As he celebrates his 50th birthday, Dave Pearce meets singer, DJ and cultural icon Boy George. One of the most recognisable faces in UK music, George started as the cloak room attendant in Steve Strange’s infamous Blitz Club before finding international fame in the mid 80s as the lead singer in Culture Club. Since splitting after their series of massive top ten hits during the 1980s, George has forged a successful career as a solo artist as well as maintaining a constant tabloid presence thanks to his often colourful personal life. However it’s often forgotten that since the early 1990s, George has had a successful parallel career as a club DJ, playing for rave promoters Fantazia in the early 1990s and becoming a regular on the Ibiza circuit. His move into mainstream dance music came in the mid ’90s when Ministry of Sound asked him to mix their ‘Annual’ compilations, which went on to sell millions worldwide. Since then George has continued DJing as well as making his own tunes. In this programme he joins Dave Pearce to talk about his life in electronic music, though the early 80s synths of Visage and the Human league, though his discovery of New York House and rave in the early 90s, to some his favourite clubbing anthems from his last 20 years as a DJ. He also talks about the 30th anniversary of Culture Club and his brand new single ‘Sunshine Of My Life’ and what’s next in his career.”
