Resident Advisor Exchange RA.EX032 with Matthew Herbert

“The UK’s electronic raconteur talks food, pigs and Cafe De Flore. Matthew Herbert once said that he has few peers. He didn’t say it in an arrogant way, mind. He simply meant it’s hard to find electronic artists that record drum sets in hot air balloons. Or ones that attempt to record the entire life cycle of a pig. Or ones that sneak into the Houses of Parliament for the sake of their art. It’s fair to say, in fact, that there’s no one like Matthew Herbert at all. Whether it’s his jazz-tinged deep house with Dani Siciliano, his work with his big band or his more explicitly experimental work of late, Herbert’s career defies categorization. The only phrase to describe him is “relentlessly curious.” We tend to call ourselves the same at RA, so we caught up with the producer at his home near the seaside in Whitstable, about 45 minutes outside of London, to explore his work in-depth.”

Resident Advisor Exchange RA.EX029 with Blackdown

Words and beats with one of the preeminent chroniclers of UK bass music. Some think that writing and electronic music just don’t mix. It’s writers like Blackdown that emphatically disprove the point. As one of the most high-profile boosters of grime and dubstep in its earliest days, he helped to introduce personalities like Dizzee Rascal, Wiley and Burial to the wider world largely via his blog and the influential magazine Deuce. Nowadays Blackdown writes for bigger outlets, namely Pitchfork and NME, but his time is also now split between writing about the music he loves, and supporting it directly through his Keysound Recordings label, which has put out music from the likes of Skream, DVA and LV. That, and his own productions alongside partner-in-grime Dusk. But where did it all start electronic music-wise for Blackdown? Techno, of course. ”

Resident Advisor podcast #255 by Lucy

“A dark exploration of rhythm from the Stroboscopic Artefacts boss. Lucy and his Stroboscopic Artefacts label are arguably the most important additions to the global techno scene in the past two years. You may have known the Italian producer (Luca Mortellaro) from his work for Meerestief Records and Perspectiv in the latter half of the ’00s but it was at the end of 2009, and the founding of SA, that his name truly began to ring out across the scene. The Berlin-based Lucy assembled a coterie of artists who, much like himself, were indebted to sounds from far outside the techno canon, and went about releasing around 15 separate examples of this vision during 2010 alone. The culmination of these endeavours surfaced earlier this year in the form of Lucy’s debut LP, Wordplay for Working Bees, an album RA’s Andrew Ryce described at the time as “one of the most personal, affecting and diverse techno albums since Shed’s The Traveller.””

Resident Advisor Exchange RA.EX027 with Mutek – Montreal festival

“In more than a decade of operation, Montreal’s Mutek has firmly established itself as one of the premiere electronic music festivals in the world. That’s a happy accident as much as anything. The event’s creation coincided with the arrival of a number of major Canadian talents on the techno stage—Akufen and Deadbeat chief among them. As explained in our previous oral history of Mutek, many of those artists have since gone on to reside in Europe, but the festival remains, and is as vibrant as ever. We caught up with Mutek programmers Alain Mongeau, Vincent Lemieux and Patti Schmidt earlier this year to talk about the event’s past, present and future.”

Resident Advisor Exchange RA.EX024 with Paul Woolford

“What comes to mind when you see the name Paul Woolford? It’s something the man himself often contemplates. He’s had more than his fair share of indelible associations after all. Whether it was his ties to Basics and 20:20 Vision in Leeds, his long-standing residency at We Love Sundays in Ibiza or his ubiquitous 2005 club-smash “Erotic Discourse,” for better or worse it seems preconceptions abound when it comes to Woolford.
And as RA’s Ryan Keeling sat down to talk in Berlin ahead of his gig at Berghain that evening, it was time for him to ruminate over his latest association—that of Carl Craig and his Planet E imprint. After handing Craig a demo back in 2009, Woolford is about release with the legendary Detroit imprint, and has subsequently been asked to join them on tour in celebration of the label’s 20th anniversary all over the world, including next month’s annual Snowbombing event.”

Resident Advisor Exchange RA.EX022 with Eddie C / Mike Shannon

“Canada, as you might know, is a mighty big country, which is why we found it funny when e-mailing Eddie C to set up an interview around his new album for Endless Flight, Parts Unknown, to find out he’d be staying in Berlin on his recent tour with fellow Canadian Mike Shannon. Slo-mo disco Eddie C and a guy who just released a minimal-minded collaboration with Dewalta? Intrigued to find out their connection to one another, we decided to get them together. In the process, we found out that the two shared time in the trenches of Kitchener, Ontario, with C holding down a radio show and Shannon throwing parties in the area. The two eventually lost touch as their music careers took them in different geographical directions: Nowadays, Shannon’s Cynosure label is based in Berlin, while C makes his home in Banff, Canada partly so he can indulge his other passion—skiing.”

Resident Advisor Exchange RA.EX021 with Scratcha DVA

“”In a rave I wil b the short borderline fat black guy lookin strange” goes the tagline to Scratcha DVA’s twitter. But there’s a few other places you can find him as well. Each morning, for instance, he’s manning Rinse FM’s Grimey Breakfast Show, doling out new tracks and offering up salvation for 9-5ers. In the studio, he’s lately been cooking up twisted takes on UK Funky and house that have wormed their way into the bags of jocks like Kode9, Bok Bok and TRG.
While his show still retains the title of the genre that originally propelled him to prominence, it’s clear that his interests are broad. He even wanted us to mention that he’d like to be booked alongside some techno acts. Maybe that’s the influence of recently playing at Berghain for the first time alongside his friends at Hyperdub? Or maybe it’s just a reflection of how long and strange a journey it’s already been for this short borderline fat black guy.”

Resident Advisor podcast #247 by Pinch

“I guess I took the opportunity to do something a little different here than people may expect of me—I usually have stuck to the dubstep tempo (around 140 BPM) in the past, however, I wanted to play a mix of tracks I’m mostly feeling at the moment so the first half is at the slower tempo of around 128 BPM and the latter half at around 140 BPM. I wanted to give the mix a bit of a journey vibe rather than a straight up dancefloor selection. I decided to layer some additional samples to give the mix a bit more a unique ‘Pinch’ flavour (i.e. dark with lots of strange reverb!). Some of the mixing isn’t exactly perfect but I like the idea that these imperfections give it a bit of ‘life’—something I personally find a little lacking when DJs seamlessly mix with CDs/Ableton or whatever. [But it’s] just a personal preference really. ”
