Carl Cox – 6 Mix 2014-05-16

“6 Mix celebrates Pioneers Month, shining a light on a selection of dance music icons, continuing with Carl Cox.
Carl Cox has come a long way since playing disco records in his mid-teens; now a veteran of acid house, a record label boss, a hugely successful run of Ibiza residencies and a whole list of releases to his name.
From disco, Carl moved on to rare groove, hip hop and electro and by the early 1980’s was present to hear the newly emerging Chicago house movement. With the British rave scene following, Carl was a prominent figure; DJing the opening night at Danny Rampling’s iconic Shoom and working with Paul Oakenfold on promoting The Project at Brighton’s Zap Club.
After a number of years playing other people’s releases, Carl’s own track emerged. It began with a 1991 debut on Oakenfold’s Perfecto Records and has lead to a whole stack of albums, compilations and singles. In addition, he has remixed the likes of Moby, Grooverider, The Stone Roses and Laurent Garnier and has formed two labels: Intec Records and 23rd Century Records. Carl continues to DJ across the world, playing to huge crowds.
In this special 6 Mix, Carl Cox takes to the 6 Music decks for two hours playing a selection of musical influences and tunes from his life in dance music.”

Jamie xx – 6 Mix 2014-05-02

Jamie xx returns to 6 Music for the second show in his 6 Mix residency, reflecting the most exciting music emerging from clubs across the world.
Ever since bursting onto the UK music scene with his band, The xx, Jamie xx has been one of the most in demand and talked about artists around. Along with Romy Croft and Oliver Sim, he won the 2010 Mercury Music Prize, and continues to win plaudits from pretty much everyone who hears his music.
Having gone to the same South London school as Four Tet, Hot Chip and Burial, on his own he’s re-worked Gil Scott-Heron’s final album, and released original productions on Scottish label Numbers – who’ve also provided a platform for Rustie, SBTRKT and Deadboy. He’s been at the forefront of UK Bass which has found its way into mainstream tracks and helped pave the way for the resurgence of Garage.
Hailed by Thom Yorke and with everything he does blogged about across the world, Jamie is more than a welcome addition to the 6 Mix Residents roster alongside Goldie, Erol Alkan, Derrick May, Andrew Weatherall and Groove Armada. In this second show for 6 Music, Jamie will be playing two hours of music from the cutting edge of club culture.”

Erol Alkan – 6 Mix 2014-04-25

“Erol Alkan returns to the 6 Mix for his second show of 2014. His last show, back in November, saw him continuing on 6 Music in a newly tweaked 6 Mix Residents line up, alongside Goldie, Derrick May, Groove Armada, Andrew Weatherall and Jamie xx.
Erol has been at the centre of UK electronic music and clubbing since 1997 when he launched his iconic Trash club night in London which helped give rise to electroclash and acts such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem and Klaxons.
As a producer he pioneered the mashup at the turn of the Millennium, and has worked with producers like Boys Noise and Richard Norris (to form Beyond the Wizard Sleeve) to create some of the biggest underground anthems, as well as remix Daft Punk, MGMT and Justice. And it doesn’t end there – as an A&R he’s built up his label Phantasy as one of the hubs of exciting, emerging UK talent. Which brings us to the fourth string to Erol’s dance music bow – radio. He’s been part of the 6 Mix for nearly five years now, pushing the sounds at the cutting edge of club culture, while giving nods to some of those who have helped shape the scene like Green Velvet/Cajmere, his good friends the Dewaele brothers who are perhaps better known as 2ManyDJs and Soulwax, as well as fellow resident Derrick May.”

Ben Watt – 6 Mix 2014-04-18

“DJ and producer Ben Watt returns to the 6 Mix exploring leftfield dance and electronic music past, present and future.
In his latest show for 6 Music, Ben picks some of his favourite tracks of the year so far and plays some music which has influenced his new solo works; the first in over 30 years.
Aside from Ben’s hugely successful paths with projects such as Everything But The Girl and Buzzin’ Fly Records, Ben is also a published writer. His second book, Romany and Tom, arrived in February this year.
In this show, Ben explores the music from his DJ travels, through down-tempo and deep house music, via upfront leftfield electronic pop interspersed with a few classics from his personal collection.”

Kenny Ken – 6 Mix 2014-04-11 Jungle Special

Whoop, whoop! Two hours of the music I grew up with, namely jungle. Big up all junglists!
“With 6 Music celebrating Britpop, 6 Mix turns the tables and celebrates another of 1994’s biggest genres: jungle. Mix an’ blend supremo, Kenny Ken takes to the 6 Music decks for two hours of junglist anthems.
Celebrating his 25th year as a DJ, Kenny Ken has been at the top of his game as one of the biggest selectors since he started in 1989. This was cemented early on in 1994 when he won the first ever Jungle Soundclash at the Roller Express in Edmonton, London. From there he became resident DJ with the Legendary AWOL, World Dance and Raindance and aside from still playing all across the world, he is also the head of two record labels; Mix and Blen recordings started back in 97 and Monitor recordings, which was re-launched in 2008.
In this programme, Kenny takes to the decks for 120 minutes of pure anthems.”

Frankie Knuckles meets Dave Pearce – 6 Mix 2014-04-04

<3 "Following the sad news of Frankie Knuckles’ passing, we repeat the 6 Mix from 2011 when Dave Pearce met the Godfather of house music to discuss his four decades in dance.
Knuckles began his career DJ-ing soul and disco records alongside infamous selector Larry Levan whilst studying textile design in Manhattan, New York. His reputation soon spread and he found himself playing at the Warehouse in Chicago in the mid 1980s, where his sets fusing bleeps, beats and bass – made with a drum machine bought from Derrick May – were credited with inventing an entire new genre of rhythmic music; house.
After the Warehouse folded in the early 1990s Frankie moved back to New York where he re-worked by tracks by Alison Limerick, Electribe 101 and had hits with anthemic tunes including The Whistle Song and Your Love. Since then, Frankie has carried on DJing around the world and remains a talismanic figure in electronic music.
In this two hour special, Frankie Knuckles reflects with Dave Pearce on his last 35 years in dance, telling the real story of how he pioneered the Chicago sound. He and Dave also reminisce about the time they spent in New York during the early 1990s and how house music has developed since.”

Kwes – 6 Mix 2014-03-28

“Having enjoyed support from various DJs on 6 Music, such as Lauren Laverne, Tom Ravenscroft and Gilles Peterson, and gracing the stage at the first ever 6 Music Festival last month, Kwes takes to the 6 Mix decks.
The London-based songwriter released his debut album, ilp, last October on Warp and as a producer, has worked with Dels, The xx, Hot Chip and Micachu. He has also worked with Damon Albarn & Jamie Hewlett on their opera ‘Monkey’, as well as Portico Quartet and Zero 7. In this programme, Kwes takes over the 6 Mix for two hours of musical inspirations and influences.”

Andrew Weatherall – 6 Mix 2014-03-21

“Iconic DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall returns to his 6 Mix Residency. Andrew’s name is one of the most widely regarded in British electronic music by those who have helped define it – Terry Farley, Paul Oakenfold and New Order to name a few.
Beginning his career as a journalist and starting the ‘Boy’s Own’ fanzine, he met Danny Rampling while DJing in North London and was invited to be a resident at his legendary Shoom nights. His reputation continued to grow and as a producer he remixed tracks for the likes of Bjork and Manic Street Preachers, has released his own tracks on various labels including Warp, and along with Primal Scream won the first ever Mercury Music Prize for ‘Screamadelica’.
Andrew is one of 6 Mix’s Residents (alongside Erol Alkan, Goldie, Derrick May, Groove Armada and Jamie xx) and has been presenting shows on 6 Music for a number of years; we never tire of his eclectic selections!”

Broken Bells – 6 Mix 2014-03-14

“Following the recent release of their second album, After The Disco, Broken Bells take to the 6 Mix decks for two hours of musical influences and inspirations.
The duo, made up of 17-time Grammy nominated Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse) and James Mercer of The Shins released their debut self-titled release in 2010 which has since gone on to be Gold certified. The idea to start working together was born following a meeting 10 years ago at the Danish festival, Roskilde. However, it wasn’t until 2009 that the duo fully announced the Broken Bells project. Fast-forward to this year and the band are currently in the middle of a European tour, supporting their new album.
In this programme, they play a selection of tracks which have inspired their creative process; which includes music from Grandmaster Flash, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode and Sheila E.”

Groove Armada – 6 Mix 2014-03-07

“6 Mix Residents, Groove Armada, return to the 6 Music decks for two hours of funk-fuelled house and disco.
Ever since the brass melody of ‘At The River’ melted our hearts in 1997, we’ve been captivated by Groove Armada’s consistently superb productions and incredible live shows. Seven studio albums later, a Grammy nomination for ‘Superstylin” and with a plethora of hits such as ‘I See You Baby’, Andy Cato and Tom Findlay still sit at the top of British electronic music.
After establishing Lovebox as one of the most eclectic and high quality line-ups in the increasingly competitive festival circuit, the pair have moved away from the event and are now concentrating on making some of the best underground house and techno tracks on forward thinking labels like Hypercolour and Brodanse.
As existing 6 Mix Residents alongside Goldie, Erol Alkan, Derrick May, Andrew Weatherall and Jamie xx, Groove Armada began their foray on the 6 Music airwaves by presenting the 6 Mix’s special to mark the 10th Anniversary of the station back in 2012. Since then, they’ve demonstrated their electric range of influences from funk, soul and disco classics all the way through to some of the most exciting up-and-coming producers making their mark in the game today.”

Graham Massey of 808 State – 6 Mix 2014-02-14

“6 Mix celebrates Manchester with 808 State’s Graham Massey, ahead of the 6 Music Festival.
Graham formed 808 State in 1987 alongside Martin Price and Gerald Simpson, who later went on to produce under the pseudonym A Guy Called Gerald, and famously took their name from the Roland TR-808 drum machines that they used. The band released their debut album Newbuild in 1988 and the following year had huge commercial success with their track Pacific State, which is widely regarded as one of the anthems from the Madchester scene.
In this programme Graham picks a selection of musical influences ranging from Miles Davis to Todd Rundgren, before launching in to a special Alternative Manchester mix where he celebrates artists from the North West such as Bicep, Lone and Crispy Ambulance.”

Goldie – 6 Mix 2014-02-07

“Having been at the forefront of Drum and Bass for two decades, we’re delighted to have Goldie return to 6 Music for his second show as a 6 Mix Resident following his last show in November. Along with Derrick May and Jamie xx, he joins Erol Alkan, Groove Armada and Andrew Weatherall to complete the new line up of 6 Mix DJs to regularly explore their musical minds.
As well as the music which has helped him make his name, Goldie will journey through everything which has inspired him from Breakbeat through Jungle and, of course, all with a heavy dose of Drum and bass.
Since the early 1990s he’s witnessed and helped nurture the rise of Drum and Bass to something, which has seen tracks top the UK charts for the first time in recent years as well as still rock underground clubs across the world. He DJ-sets are legendary, his productions timeless and his radio shows you won’t want to miss.”
