Marquis Hawkes – Resident Advisor podcast #532 2016-08-08

“Celebratory house and techno.
It’s possible that Mark Hawkins has several different groups of fans. If you were buying tough, jacking techno in the early-to-mid 2000s, you might have picked up his 12-inches for the iconic Dutch label Djax-Up-Beats, among others. Hawkins explored techno’s extremities, with grinding, fast-paced tracks that folded in influences from ghetto house. More recently, you may have enjoyed Hawkins’ dusky releases as Juxta Position. It hasn’t been his most prolific alias, with three releases since 2013, but the music has made an impact, particularly Juxta Position Vol.1, which came out on DVS1’s Mistress Recordings. You might even know him as ###, a pseudonym he used in the late ’00s for a couple of minimal outings.”

Motor City Drum Ensemble vs Jeremy Underground – Resident Advisor podcast #530 2016-07-25 live at Robert Johnson, Germany

“Nine hours, back-to-back, live from Robert Johnson.
As a duo, Danilo Plessow (Motor City Drum Ensemble) and Jeremy Fichon (Jeremy Underground) make total sense together. They both got their break as house DJs, fond of classic and rare grooves, before their styles broadened significantly to include jazz, soul, disco, funk and boogie from around the world. They both find plenty of this music through obsessive digging, going to great lengths to source unheard and underappreciated records. As part of this ongoing pursuit, they both belong to a loose community of like-minded “digger DJs” that also includes Floating Points, Sadar Bahar, Red Greg and Hunee, among others. Needless to say, Plessow and Fichon both cherish vinyl. They prefer to play on rotary mixers, and both practice a type of modern disco DJing that’s as much about technique as it is attitude. And, as Plessow explains below, they both have plenty in common when it comes to “life and experiences.””

Raime – Resident Advisor podcast #528 2016-07-11

“Old-school garage and grime from the dark side.
What does Dizzee Rascal have to do with Steve Albini? How does Fugazi relate to Geeneus? On Raime’s second album, Tooth, the duo of Joe Andrews and Tom Halstead attempt to find out. The album explores an unlikely dialogue between post-hardcore and garage and grime (with, among other influences, some dub techno thrown into the mix). Tooth is rife with tense guitar lines, making the influence of post-hardcore easy to spot, but the presence of UK club music reveals itself more slowly and satisfyingly. “Most of the rhythm sections are based around grime and garage,” Andrews and Halstead say below. “All the hats and snares on the ‘off,’ the basslines work in similar ways.” “Hold Your Line” is a good example of this, especially if you speed the track up a bit—the way that brushed hats interplay with a throbbing bassline is pure garage. Tooth is the follow-up to Raime’s well-received 2012 debut, Quarter Turns Over A Living Line, an album that established both the duo and Blackest Ever Black, the label it was released on, as significant new forces in experimental electronic music.”

Red Greg – Resident Advisor podcast #527 2016-07-04

“Obscure soul, disco and boogie from a highly regarded selector.
Darren Griffiths, AKA Red Greg, is not a widely known DJ, but among disco and soul aficionados he’s one of the most highly regarded. He’s been collecting records since the late ’80s, cultivating an outrageously deep collection of dance floor-focussed disco, boogie and soul. His compilation Under The Influence, released on Z records in 2011, is a great example of his style. The release featured a slew of mega obscure, independently released music. Perhaps the pick of the release was Aged In Harmony’s “You’re A Melody,” an incredibly funky and rare mid-tempo soul track. When Floating Points tried to track down a vinyl copy, he was pointed in the direction of Griffiths. A friendship blossomed that lead to him playing Floating Points’ You’re A Melody party at Plastic People. Jeremy Underground also played that night, and the recording introduced Griffiths to a much wider audience, the mix being voted in the top mixes of 2013 on RA.”

Karenn – Resident Advisor podcast #526 2016-06-27

“Raw, improvised techno.
Blawan and Pariah have been playing slamming, improvised techno together as Karenn for the better part of five years now. They’ve become one of techno’s most in-demand live acts and although they haven’t released original recordings since 2014, their back catalogue still turns heads. Both Englishmen caught the techno bug around 2011, feeding the tensile funk of their UK dance music heritage into a new palette of grinding gears and serrated textures. However, as both Arthur Cayzer and Jamie Roberts would admit, improvising from scratch with an imposing fleet of synths, drum machines and effects is no mean feat, especially when you’re playing for over 90 minutes. They’ve spent the intervening years stripping out the fat, trading sensory overload for a sleeker, stripped sound with greater shades of emotional subtlety.”

Boys Noize – Resident Advisor podcast #524 2016-06-13

“The German artist shows us his strange side.
No matter your thoughts on electro house’s hyper-compressed grind, there’s no denying the influence of its plus-sized beats on modern styles. While many of the genre’s biggest names have flamed out or faded away since its heyday in the second half of the 2000s, others have proved more durable and versatile. Boys Noize, AKA Alexander Ridha, is a case-in-point. For a while tracks like “& Down” were inescapable at mainstream festivals, but these days he’s playing at Robert Johnson and releasing heads-down techno 12-inches on his eponymous label. He spent the intervening years attempting to link the relentless energy of his early productions to other styles—he might collaborate with someone like Skrillex but he can still drop Randomer, Anthony Naples and I-F in a mix.”

“One of UK club music’s best producers gets loose.

Dolan Bergin – Resident Advisor podcast #516 2016-05-30

“Mood-setting selections from a pillar of London’s dance scene.
It’s easy to think of Dolan Bergin as a promoter first, DJ second. Along with Ajay Jayaram, he runs The Hydra, one of the most respected parties in London. The event is now entering its fifth year, following a 2015 that took in some the city’s most talked-about events, with the likes of Ostgut Ton, Dekmantel, Numbers, Blueprint and Innervisions all co-hosting label showcases. He’s also the man behind electric minds, a party-cum-label that’s celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2016. But one of the things that’s fuelled both The Hydra and Electric Minds down the years has been Bergin’s reliably strong warm-up sets. In this artform he schooled himself listening to DJs like Theo Parrish and François K when they opened the night at Plastic People, arriving early to see how they built a vibe from scratch. As a result, Bergin knows how to expertly set the tone at his own parties, coaxing people onto the dance floor without ever pushing things too hard.
On Bergin’s RA podcast there’s a smooth, unfussy ebb and flow, which weaves together emotive deep house and techno tunes from the likes of Mike Huckaby, Prince Of Denmark, Marco Shuttle and Marquis Hawkes.”

The Range – Resident Advisor podcast #515 2016-05-23

“Emotional electronica.
Can you think of many current dance music artists whose music you’d call “earnest”? Not earnest in the sense of solemnity or seriousness, more like honest-to-god, heart-on-the-sleeve emotion? Dance music often seems most comfortable in obfuscation, its emotions held back a little, but as The Range, James Hinton writes songs that go against this grain. His sound, a kind of home listening style made from bits of club music, is pretty and incredibly sincere. In his review of Potential, Hinton’s recent album on Domino, Andrew Ryce used words like “poignancy,” “vulnerable,” “bittersweet,” and “heart-tugging melodrama” to describe its 11 tracks. In particular, Hinton loves to draw sentiment from the human voice. On Nonfiction, his 2013 breakthrough album, he sampled speech and singing from YouTube videos with barely any views; on Potential he put this concept at the heart of the record, going as far as to make a documentary about the stories behind the people he sampled. “Right now I don’t have a backup plan for if I don’t make it,” says a wannabe artist on “Regular,” a line soaked in hope and vulnerability in a way that defines the album.”

Benga – Resident Advisor Exchange podcast RA.EX297 2016-04-14

“The ups and downs of a dubstep superstar.
Between 2004 and 2014, Adegbenga Adejumo, the artist known as Benga, was untouchable. He was part of dubstep’s golden generation, a scrappy gang of DJs and producers that transformed the genre from a local concern into a global phenomenon. Benga and his partner in crime Skream became the scene’s poster boys, their boisterous DJ style, countless club hits and fearless attitude fuelling their sharp ascent to stardom. By age 28, Benga had toured the world several times over, made beats for Katy B, Kano and Eve, and signed a major label record deal as one-third of Magnetic Man.
So you can imagine the public’s shock when, in February 2014, Benga suddenly retired from the industry. 18 months later, the truth behind the decision emerged in a candid interview with The Guardian, where Benga detailed the full extent of his battle with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. He’s since returned to music, playing shows and releasing records for the first time in more than two years. Now felt like the right time to catch up with Benga, so we invited him to our London office for a bares-all chat with staff writer Carlos Hawthorn.”

Keita Sano – Resident Advisor podcast #515 2016-04-11

“Slamming house from one of our favourite new producers.
It took one minute and two seconds for us to fall for Keita Sano. That’s how long it was before a rude-as-f bassline dropped in his 2014 track “People Are Changing.” It was our introduction to a producer we’d now rank among the maddest and most interesting in house and techno. Perhaps what we like best about Sano is his restlessness. “People Are Changing” was part of a wave of tracks he released through Mister Saturday Night that occupied a dank trench between house and techno. But skip forward to his excellent 2015 EP Bowl Of Water and it’s a very different story—here we get lush instrumentation, broken beats and African chants. Around the same time, he released an album on 1080p, Holding New Cards, a record Jordan Rothlein affectionately described as “overstuffed, stylistically varied to the point of incongruity and often unsettlingly strange.” (This is to say nothing of his striking downtempo series, Pacific Tones.) Sure, anyone can mix it up in studio, but it’s rare for someone to pull it off with such style. Sano is from Okayama, Japan, and has kept a fairly low profile until now, so we’re pretty pleased to have this mix from him. He clearly wasn’t in the mood to mess about during its recording: RA.515 is 60 minutes of his own slamming (mostly unreleased) house tunes.”

Leafar Legov – Resident Advisor podcast #514 2016-04-04

“Soothing rhythms from a Giegling mainstay.
Leafar Legov is a quiet but essential member of the Giegling family. He and Konstantin were making music together in Hannover before the label formed—today, they are Kettenkarussell, a live act and production outfit whose bittersweet sound embodies Giegling’s ineffable ethos. Perhaps even more than his label-mates, Legov’s relationship with club music seems purely conditional—he’ll follow its guidelines only when they happen to suit his creative impulses. With Kettenkarussell, he makes what could loosely be described as downtempo house. On his solo records, he offsets ambient sketches with somber hip-hop instrumentals. But his personal musical universe is still, for the most part, a mystery—aside from “Blush,” an excellent one-off from 2009 he made as Robert Oh, his first solo release was Giegling’s latest EP, Talk, which came out in February. Abstract and subdued, it’s a record that points to Giegling’s emotional depth and stylistic open-endedness.
Legov’s RA Podcast is more committed to a 4/4 pulse, but it’s still extraordinarily serene, ghosting through a sequence of vague and lovely cinematic images. Composed entirely of unreleased productions, it’s a titillating glimpse of what Legov’s got up his sleeve.”

Markus Suckut – Resident Advisor podcast #513 2016-03-28

“Wonderfully functional techno.
“I am not trying to reach perfection,” Markus Suckut says below. As a listener, you might think otherwise. Over the past five years, Suckut has become a master of powerful, precision-tooled club tracks. The German techno producer makes the sort of music that elicits almost existential questions—”How am I so excited by a kick drum and some hi-hats?” His best tracks come from the Robert Hood school of minimalism, where groove is king and arrangements progress through something as small as a cymbal line. Take his track “Hunt” from 2012. Basically, it’s just a monumental kick drum, a Basic Channel-style synth and some hats, yet it’s a potentially earth-shattering piece of music. Suckut has been exploring these sorts of moods on respected labels like Stroboscopic Aretfacts, Frozen Border, Horizontal Ground, Figure, Repitch and Mosaic, and he has a couple imprints of his own: Exile, which he runs with Johannes Heil, and SCKT, which he revived this month. On Heat On Feet, a recent release for Rekids, Suckut showed that his hand can be effectively turned to broken beats and lighter moods. But, as Will Lynch concluded in his review of the record, Suckut’s appeal is less about diversity and more about doing one thing extremely well.
On Suckut’s RA podcast he shows how this sound is best deployed in the mix, making subtle gestures with intense techno.”

Hops – Resident Advisor podcast #512 2016-03-21

Modern bass sounds from a Hard Wax staff member.
Hops is flexible behind the decks—he’s as comfortable playing a Sex Tags Mania party as he is a Swamp 81 night. Still, he has more clarity of vision than most selectors out there, pushing a sound that’s sparse, swinging and fresh, melding only the most timeless elements of grime, dubstep, dub and techno. With 19 powerful and sub-heavy club cuts, many of them unreleased dubplates, RA 512 is a closely considered showcase of this sound, presenting one man’s take on the vanguard of bass music.”
