Resident Advisor Exchange podcast RA.EX051 Todd Edwards

“Face to face with the New Jersey DJ/producer. Hear one Todd Edwards track, and you can likely pick out another one. When he started his career, the New Jersey beatmaker made a conscious decision to craft an identifiable sound. In the process, he became a late ’90s/early ’00s hero in 2-step and garage circles in the UK. (And further afield as well: His best known track is “Face to Face,” a collaboration with French duo Daft Punk.) With a recent remix of Night Slugs affiliate Kingdom under his belt, Edwards is coming back into the public eye. As RA’s Stephen Titmus recently found out, however, it’s just another chapter in a lengthy and fascinating career.”

Resident Advisor Exchange RA.EX045 with Philip Sherburne

The tables are turned on electronic music’s most well-known scribe. Philip Sherburne is one of the foremost electronic music writers in the world. Through his work at The Wire, Pitchfork and, yes, Resident Advisor, he’s done as much as anyone to champion (and critique) what is going on in house, techno and beyond since he first put pen to paper in the late ’90s. In the process, he’s written countless reviews and profiles, coined the term “microhouse” and conducted interviews with the likes of Moritz Von Oswald and Ricardo Villalobos. This in-depth conversation with Sherburne takes in his early days as a fan of hardcore in Portland, Oregon; the record shop in Rhode Island that turned him fully onto electronic music and why he recently decided to go to Las Vegas’ Electric Daisy Carnival.”

Resident Advisor Exchange RA.EX042 with Chris Liebing

A techno giant shares his journey. Irrepressible is probably the best word to describe Chris Liebing, whether you’re referring to his preferred brand of hard-edged techno (once called schranz, before it become a loaded term), his enthusiasm for everything and everyone (follow his Twitter, and you’ll see him talking to Boy George and Moby in addition to the usual suspects) or, of course, his grin—something Dustin Zahn once called “the thousand yard smile.” It hasn’t been easy, though. After getting his start in the electronic music world in the early ’90s in the surprisingly vital town of Giessen, Liebing nearly gave it all up after his local techno club went under. Legendary Frankfurt techno club Omen, however, eventually came calling, and he hasn’t looked back since. And with industrial-sized beats and his own CLR label undergoing a creative renaissance, things have never been better.”

Resident Advisor Exchange RA.EX040 with Adam X

Warehouses, graffiti and techno with the NYC native. Prolific industrial/EBM champion Adam X needs little introduction, but for those who missed his RA podcast and Finn Johannsen’s interview, here goes: Adam X’s legacy was sown in the early ’90s with the opening of the Sonic Groove record store and a series of Brooklyn warehouse raves he produced with this his brother, Frankie Bones. In 1995 the Sonic Groove imprint was launched as outlet for Adam X’s own productions and other artists harbouring the darker, futuristic side of electronic music, artists that through the years have included the likes of Kevin Saunderson and Dave Clarke. In 2007 Adam X relocated to Berlin and inspired by trips to the city’s famed Berghain club began releasing under the alias Traversable Wormhole—a name that has since become a watchword for twisted, atmospheric techno. In this instalment of our Live Exchange series at Mutek, Todd L. Burns talks to the New York techno veteran.”

Resident Advisor podcast #259 by Skream

Dubstep’s biggest DJ steps up. Croydon. Big Apple Records. Hatcha. Skream’s back story evokes all the right passages of dubstep folklore. Oli Jones began making music as a 15-year-old; he was an employee of the now legendary record store and one of dubstep’s first and foremost producers before his teenage years were through. Much of the music in the developmental stages of his career was recorded alongside Benga, with whom Jones now lines up—in addition to Artwork—as Magnetic Man. The group became the genre’s biggest crossover success to date at the end of last year with the release of their self-titled album, although Jones as always remained entirely difficult to pin down—NonPlus+, Swamp 81, Deep Medi Musik and Tempa are just a few of the imprints to host his zig-zagging 12-inches in the past few of years.”

Resident Advisor Exchange RA.EX032 with Matthew Herbert

“The UK’s electronic raconteur talks food, pigs and Cafe De Flore. Matthew Herbert once said that he has few peers. He didn’t say it in an arrogant way, mind. He simply meant it’s hard to find electronic artists that record drum sets in hot air balloons. Or ones that attempt to record the entire life cycle of a pig. Or ones that sneak into the Houses of Parliament for the sake of their art. It’s fair to say, in fact, that there’s no one like Matthew Herbert at all. Whether it’s his jazz-tinged deep house with Dani Siciliano, his work with his big band or his more explicitly experimental work of late, Herbert’s career defies categorization. The only phrase to describe him is “relentlessly curious.” We tend to call ourselves the same at RA, so we caught up with the producer at his home near the seaside in Whitstable, about 45 minutes outside of London, to explore his work in-depth.”
