Deep Sh*t (Jack Savidge and Edwin Congreave) – 6 Mix 2014-01-31

“Jack Savidge from Friendly Fires and Edwin Congreave of Foals, who run the night and label Deep Sh*t, take to the 6 Mix decks.
Drumming for Friendly Fires, Jack and the band released their debut album in 2008, with a Mercury Music Prize nomination appearing the following year. Since then a follow up album, Pala, has appeared alongside an edition of the compilation series, Late Night Tales and a Friendly Fires Bugged Out album, mixed my Jack. As a side project to the band, Jack has been spending time behind the decks including opening for DJ Sneak at Space regular stints at his Deep Sh*t night, appearing on the bill alongside names such as Luke Solomon, Leon Vynehall and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs.
Jack’s Deep Sh*t partner in crime is Foals keyboardist, Edwin Congreave. Foals’ third album Holy Fire was named as one of 6 Music’s Top 5 albums of 2013 and December was spent touring the US with their latest offering. In addition to releasing music with Foals, Edwin had released his own EP on Deep Sh*t, possibly surprising his indie fanbase with Heal, a heavy slice of deep house. Although Deep Sh*t premiered as a club night in London’s Plastic People; a place for both musicians to explore a different musical route, or in their words “deep, intense party music”, the success has allowed the duo to move in to releasing music and February sees the label’s fourth release. this time from Russian producer Dimitri Veimar.
Citing DJs such as Carl Craig and the 6 Mix’s very own Andrew Weatherall as influences, the duo step up to the 6 Mix decks for two hours of music they’ve been playing at their club nights, with a couple of exclusives thrown in for good measure. ”

Erol Alkan – 6 Mix 2014-01-24

“Erol Alkan returns to the 6 Mix for his first show of 2014. His last show, back in November, saw him continuing on 6 Music in a newly tweaked 6 Mix Residents line up, alongside Goldie, Derrick May, Groove Armada, Andrew Weatherall and Jamie xx.
Erol has been at the centre of UK electronic music and clubbing since 1997 when he launched his iconic Trash club night in London which helped give rise to electroclash and acts such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem and Klaxons.
As a producer he pioneered the mashup at the turn of the Millennium, and has worked with producers like Boys Noise and Richard Norris (to form Beyond the Wizard Sleeve) to create some of the biggest underground anthems, as well as remix Daft Punk, MGMT and Justice. And it doesn’t end there – as an A&R he’s built up his label Phantasy as one of the hubs of exciting, emerging UK talent. Which brings us to the fourth string to Erol’s dance music bow – radio. He’s been part of the 6 Mix for nearly five years now, pushing the sounds at the cutting edge of club culture, while giving nods to some of those who have helped shape the scene like Green Velvet/Cajmere, his good friends the Dewaele brothers who are perhaps better known as 2ManyDJs and Soulwax, as well as fellow resident Derrick May.”

Groove Armada – 6 Mix 2014-01-17

“Tom Findlay, 6 Mix Resident and one half of Groove Armada, returns to the 6 Music decks for two hours of funk-fuelled house and disco.
Ever since the brass melody of ‘At The River’ melted our hearts in 1997, we’ve been captivated by Groove Armada’s consistently superb productions and incredible live shows. Seven studio albums later, a Grammy nomination for ‘Superstylin” and with a plethora of hits such as ‘I See You Baby’, Andy Cato and Tom Findlay still sit at the top of British electronic music.
After establishing Lovebox as one of the most eclectic and high quality line-ups in the increasingly competitive festival circuit, the pair have moved away from the event and are now concentrating on making some of the best underground house and techno tracks on forward thinking labels like Hypercolour and Brodanse.
As existing 6 Mix Residents alongside Goldie, Erol Alkan, Derrick May, Andrew Weatherall and Jamie xx, Groove Armada will be hosting shows every couple of months on 6 Music where they’ve already demonstrated their electric range of influences from funk, soul and disco classics all the way through to some of the most exciting up-and-coming producers making their mark in the game today.”

Will Saul, Midland and Dusky – 6 Mix 2014-01-10 Aus Music Takeover

“DJ and producer Will Saul talks to Midland and Dusky, two acts who’ve had a big few years on the Aus Music label, about their musical influences and inspirations before all of them go back to back for an hour on the 6 Mix decks.
Celebrating it’s 10th birthday this year, Aus Music was the brainchild of Will Saul, who also founded the imprint’s sister label Simple Records and Ninja Tune artist, Fink. Aside from his DJing, Will is also an A&R and producer, having remixed for Little Dragon, Scuba, Fink, Pearson Sound, and The Juan Maclean to name just a few. He was also a resident at the legendary End club in London for many years before it closed it’s doors in 2009.
Aus Music is home to a diverse roster of artists, having released music by Appleblim, Joy Orbison, George Fitzgerald and Deetron, with the focus being to release more experimental and leftfield sounds to Simple. Having enjoyed a particularly strong few years, the label was voted in xlr8r magazine’s Top 10 labels of 2012 and its releases are a firm favourite of 6 Mix Residents Groove Armada, who recently said it was their favourite label, and has been supported by other regulars such as X-Press 2 and Ben Watt.”

Booka Shade – 6 Mix 2013-12-27 Booka Shade’s 6 Mixmas

“German techno legends Booka Shade are taking over the show for what will be a very special couple of hours indeed. With Rudolph back in the stable, Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier will take you on a magical journey with their 6 Mixmas.
They can look back on a career which comes in at just under two decades. During which time the Frankfurt pair have released seven albums and founded the hugely influential Get Physical Records alongside M.A.N.D.Y. and DJ T, which has put out tracks from Junior Boys, Damian Lazarus, Jessie Rose, Trentemøller and Modeselektor amongst many others.”

Jamie xx – 6 Mix 2013-12-06

YaY! Jamie xx in bloody mix! Great way to start the Saturday after a wet Friday night.
“Ever since bursting onto the UK music scene with his band, The xx, Jamie xx has been one of the most in demand and talked about artists around. Along with Romy Croft and Oliver Sim, he won the 2010 Mercury Music Prize, and continues to win plaudits from pretty much everyone who hears his music.
Having gone to the same South London school as Four Tet, Hot Chip and Burial, on his own he’s re-worked Gil Scott-Heron’s final album, and released original productions on Scottish label Numbers – who’ve also provided a platform for Rustie, SBTRKT and Deadboy. He’s been at the forefront of UK Bass which has found its way into mainstream tracks and helped pave the way for the resurgence of Garage.
Hailed and supported by Thom Yorke of Radiohead no less, and with everything he does blogged about across the world, Jamie is more than a welcome addition to the 6 Mix Residents roster, reflecting the most exciting music emerging from clubs across the world.”

Andrew Weatherall – 6 Mix 2013-11-29

“Andrew Weatherall’s name is one of the most widely regarded in British electronic music by those who have helped define it – Terry Farley, Paul Oakenfold and New Order to name a few.
Beginning his career as a journalist and starting the ‘Boy’s Own’ fanzine, he met Danny Rampling while DJing in North London and was invited to be a resident at his legendary Shoom nights. His reputation continued to grow and as a producer he remixed tracks for the likes of Bjork and Manic Street Preachers, has released his own tracks on various labels including Warp, and along with Primal Scream won the first ever Mercury Music Prize for ‘Screamadelica’.”

Derrick May – 6 Mix 2013-11-08

Oh, this should be good. One of the old heroes!
“Along with Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May is viewed as one of the founding fathers of Techno – a genre which has for a quarter of a century been constantly revolutionising electronic dance music and clubbing culture.
His seminal track ‘Strings of Life’ changed the game and sounds as fresh in DJ sets today as it did in 1987. In the words of Frankie Knuckles: “it just exploded. It was like something you can’t imagine, the kind of power and energy people got off that record when it was first heard. Mike Dunn says he has no idea how people can accept a record that doesn’t have a baseline.”
Having taken influence from the likes of Parliament, Gary Numan and Kraftwerk, while helping to create a platform which made it possible for The Prodigy, Carl Craig and Richie Hawtin to make the music they have done – expect two hours of the premium music.”

Along with Derrick May and Jamie xx, he joins Erol Alkan, Groove Armada and Andrew Weatherall to complete the new line up of DJs to regularly explore their musical minds.
As well as the music which has helped him make his name, Goldie will journey through everything which has inspired him from Hip-Hop to Breakbeat, telling the stories of his early days as a graffiti artist, through the history of Metalheadz to the current state of his scene.
Since the early 1990s he’s witnessed and helped nurture the rise of Drum and Bass to something, which has seen tracks top the UK charts for the first time in recent years as well as still rock underground clubs across the world.
