Andrew Weatherall – Screamadelica’s roots 2021-02-16

“As part of the 6 Music Artist Collection on Andrew Weatherall, another chance to hear him hosting a special 6 Mix, discussing his role as producer of Primal Scream’s Screamadelica album and playing some of the music that inspired it.
Since its release in 1991, Screamadelica has cemented its reputation as a classic of its genre, carving out a fresh new sound for alternative music and even being honoured with its own, limited edition, postage stamp.
Andrew, with the help of notes from singer Bobby Gillespie, delves into his record collection to pick out some of the music they were listening to between 1989 to 1991. including Jah Wobble, Public Image Ltd, Chairman of the Board and Suicide. Andrew also talks about how tunes by Can, Isaac Hayes and others provided a soundtrack at the studio sessions, the gigs and late nights on the tour bus afterwards. He also explains how post-rock, dance and soul collided to inform Screamadelica’s unique sound.

The First Time with Andrew Weatherall – 6 Music Artist Collection 2021-02-16

“A year after Andrew Weatherall’s sad passing, aged just 56, 6 Music presents an Artist Collection on the influential and much-missed DJ and producer.
We kick off with another chance to hear Andrew talking in 2011 to Matt Everitt about the musical milestones of his life.
While some DJs emerged out of the early house movement to settle into a comfortable and predictably lucrative careers as superclub-orientated superstar DJs, Andrew Weatherall has always followed his own musical compass.
Andrew discusses his career from the first track he ever DJ’d (the WWII War film theme 633 Squadron) onto his residency at the UK’s earliest acid house club Shoom. He also talks about producing Primal Scream’s genre-breaking Screamadelica and his later work delving into the darker side of vintage rock ‘n’ roll and techno.
This interview features the humour, style and impeccable musical choices that one would expect from one of contemporary music’s most innovative and original figures, who is much missed. First broadcast in March 2011.”

Andrew Weatherall 2019-08-23

“DJ Andrew Weatherall sits in for Iggy Pop tonight with a mix of three halves (geddit?) including an ecelctic electro workout. He’s picking up the All Day Rave mantle from yesterday for all the weekenders out there.
Initially working as a freelance music journalist, Weatherall’s DJ career started to take off in the late Eighties when he met Danny Rampling who invited him to play his club night Shoom.
He went on to become a regular Shoom DJ, playing the upstairs room alongside his friend Terry Farley, as well as spinning records at Paul Oakenfold’s Future/Spectrum nights and Nicky Holloway’s Trip.
In other words, some of the key club that came to define dance music as the Eighties turned into the Nineties.
His first studio work was alongside Paul Oakenfold working on the essential club remix of Hallelujah for the Happy Mondays. Other remixes followed, notably “World in Motion” for New Order, “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” for Saint Etienne and “Soon” for My Bloody Valentine which was ranked at number 1 in NME’s list of “The 50 Best Remixes Ever”.
His complete re-working of Primal Scream’s RnR ballad “I’m Losing More Than I’ll Ever Have” into the mind-bending Loaded was so perfect it failed to make the aforementioned chart of remixes.
Since then he’s gone from strength to strength both in the studio and behind the decks.”
