“As a founding member of Faithless and a world-renowned DJ, Sister Bliss needs little introduction. Alongside Maxi Jazz and Rollo Armstrong, Faithless were responsible for some of the biggest tunes to come out of the UK dance scene, including God Is A DJ, Insomnia and We Come 1. Six albums, 15 million record sales and numerous live dates later, the band decided to call it a day in 2011, although Sister Bliss and Maxi Jazz still occasionally perform together.
2014 sees the release of new material under the Bliss moniker and to celebrate Sister Bliss takes to the 6 Mix decks for two hours of new music from her DJ travels and musical inspirations.”

“Simian Mobile Disco aka James Ford and Jas Shaw, take to the 6 Mix decks with two hours of dark beats & wobbly techno.
The duo have been making music together since 2000; first as part of the four piece Simian – who’s track ‘Never Be Alone’ morphed into the huge electro hit ‘We Are Your Friends’ via the help of Justice – and then later as Simian Mobile Disco.
Ahead of the release of their fourth album, Whorl, the duo take over the 6 Music airwaves with music from Dark Sky, DJ Koze, Luke Soloman and Wesley Matsell.”

“Godfather of Chillout and Cafe del Mar legend José Padilla takes to the 6 Mix decks for two hours of Balearic beats.
José moved to Ibiza in 1975 and has been DJing there ever since – 2014 sees Jose celebrate his 40th year as a DJ and also his return to the iconic Cafe del Mar after 15 years away. His Chillout sets at the venue soundtracked the summers of the 90’s and his mix series have sold over 6 million copies worldwide. This summer sees the arrival of a new single, with an album planned for early next year.
In this programme, José takes over the 6 Music airwaves for two hours and plays the music that has soundtracked his sun-kissed career.”

“Along with Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May is viewed as one of the founding fathers of Techno – a genre which has for a quarter of a century been constantly revolutionising electronic dance music and clubbing culture. His seminal track ‘Strings of Life’ changed the game and sounds as fresh in DJ sets today as it did in 1987. In the words of the late, great Frankie Knuckles: “it just exploded. It was like something you can’t imagine, the kind of power and energy people got off that record when it was first heard. Mike Dunn says he has no idea how people can accept a record that doesn’t have a baseline.”
Having taken influence from the likes of Parliament, Gary Numan and Kraftwerk, while helping to create a platform which made it possible for The Prodigy, Carl Craig and Richie Hawtin to make the music they have done – expect two hours of the premium music as Derrick returns to 6 Music for the next show in his 6 Mix Residency.”

My hero growing up!
“Roni Size, the Bristol-born stalwart of Drum & Bass, takes to the 6 Mix decks for two hours of classic cuts and brand new releases.
Starting on the music production path when he was 16, it didn’t take long for this hobby to turn in to a full time passion. A meeting with Krust in the 90’s ended up with the pair starting their own label, WTP. This, in turn, allowed Full Cycle and Dope Dragon to be established in 1993. A few years later, Roni was signed to Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud label and in 1997 he released the Mercury Prize winning New Forms as Roni Size & Reprazent, which contained the iconic track Brown Paper Bag. Since the release of New Forms, Roni has released a further 6 albums and a whole host of singles, working with the likes of Method Man, Rodney P and Zack de la Rocha from Rage Against The Machine.
2014 sees the release of his new album, Take Kontrol, which is the first original material in a over a decade, and the reprise of Reprazent with a one-off gig at the end of the year at London’s Village Underground.
In this special 6 Mix, Roni Size takes over the 6 Music airwaves for two hours to show why he has been, and still is, such a huge name in British music.”

“Sonic architects, Zero 7, bring a sun-kissed two hours of tunes to BBC Radio 6 Music.
The duo, consisting of Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker, formed the group in 1997 after working as studio engineers for artists such as Robert Plant and the Pet Shop Boys. They released their Mercury nominated debut album, Simple Things, in 2001 and have since released three further albums, working with the likes of Eska, Sia and Jose Gonzalez. This summer sees Henry and Sam return with some new material, the first track being their new single Simple Science.
To celebrate their return, the duo get behind the 6 Mix decks for two hours of tunes from their DJ travels.”

“Erol Alkan returns to the 6 Mix for his third show of 2014. His last show, back in April, saw him continuing on 6 Music in a newly tweaked 6 Mix Residents line up, alongside Goldie, Derrick May, Groove Armada, Andrew Weatherall and Jamie xx.
Erol has been at the centre of UK electronic music and clubbing since 1997 when he launched his iconic Trash club night in London which helped give rise to electroclash and acts such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem and Klaxons. As a producer he pioneered the mashup sound at the turn of the Millennium and has worked with producers like Boys Noize and Richard Norris (to form Beyond the Wizard Sleeve) to create some of the biggest underground anthems; all whilst remixing Daft Punk, MGMT, Justice and most recently the Manic Street Preachers. If he wasn’t busy enough, he has also just been announced as the next DJ to take on the renowned FabricLive mix series.
And it doesn’t end there – as an A&R he’s built up his label Phantasy as one of the hubs of exciting, emerging UK talent. This all brings us to the fourth string to Erol’s dance music bow – radio. He’s been part of the 6 Mix for over five years now, pushing the sounds at the cutting edge of club culture, while giving nods to some of those who have helped shape the scene like Green Velvet/Cajmere, his good friends the Dewaele brothers who are perhaps better known as 2ManyDJs and Soulwax, as well as fellow resident Derrick May.”

“Rob da Bank takes over the decks as a 6 Mix Resident, playing an eclectic mix of audio loveliness from techno to chillwave, covering a spectrum of leftfield music, new and old.
He joins as a resident following two stints as a 6 Mix guest DJ – the first was earlier this year in February, the second in May. Aside from his radio ventures, he is best known as the creator of Bestival and Camp Bestival, and the Sunday Best label which has released music by David Lynch, Dan le Sac & Scroobius Pip, Valerie June, Dub Pistols and Beardyman.”

“Big Beat maestro, Fatboy Slim, takes to the 6 Mix decks for two hours of musical influences.
From first rising to fame in the 1980s as the bassist for The Housemartins, to spearheading the big beat revolution in the 1990s to playing at the closing ceremony the the 2012 Olympics – Fatboy Slim is one of the most well known names in British dance music.
In this programme he takes over the 6 Music airwaves to play the music which inspired him to get behind the decks in the first place; with music from King Tubby, Grandmaster Flash, Public Enemy and a few Fatboy Slim mash ups for good measure.”

“Taking a detour from their summer DJ dates in various sun-kissed destinations, renowned UK house duo X-Press 2 return to the 6 Mix for two hours of musical inspirations and current favourites.
Rocky and Diesel first rose to underground prominence in 1993, with their tracks Muzik Xpress and London Xpress; and later enjoyed mainstream success with their Number 2 smash Lazy, which featured David Byrne from Talking Heads. The duo returned to the studio and released their highly anticipated third album, The House Of X-Press 2 in 2012.
Even though they have been at the forefront of UK house for over 20 years there’s certainly no slowing down for the pair who are currently in the middle of a summer DJ tour. Aside from their 6 Mix shows the duo also played to a packed crowd at the 6 Music Festival back in March. “Having been at the forefront of Drum and Bass for two decades, we’re delighted to have Goldie return to 6 Music for his third show as a 6 Mix Resident following his last show in February. Along with Derrick May and Jamie xx, he joins Erol Alkan, Groove Armada and Andrew Weatherall to complete the new line up of 6 Mix DJs to regularly explore their musical minds.
As well as the music which has helped him make his name, Goldie will journey through everything which has inspired him from Breakbeat through Jungle and, of course, all with a heavy dose of Drum and bass. Inspired from his performance of Timeless with the Heritage Orchestra a few weeks ago at London’s South Bank, this show he looks at some of the more musical drum and bass tracks, both old and new.
Since the early 1990s he’s witnessed and helped nurture the rise of Drum and Bass to something, which has seen tracks top the UK charts for the first time in recent years as well as still rock underground clubs across the world. He DJ-sets are legendary, his productions timeless and his radio shows you won’t want to miss.”

“Following the release of their fourth album, Nabuma Rubberband, Little Dragon take to the 6 Mix decks for two hours. The Swedish quartet pick a whole host of musical inspirations, new and old, from Paul Simon to Pedestrian via Leon Vynehall and Roman Fluegel.
Forming in Gothenburg in 1996, it was 11 years until their self-titled debut album appeared. Since then, the band’s members have released three more albums and worked on side projects with a whole host of artists – from Yukimi providing the vocals on SBTRKT’s Wildfire, DJ Shadow’s Scale It Back and Raphael Saadiq’s Just Don’t, to collaborations with José González and TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek.
Little Dragon were in session for Lauren Laverne back in March and have been supported right across 6 Music’s schedule from Gilles Peterson to Steve Lamacq – in this programme, the band get the change to hand-pick 120 minutes of their favourite music and tracks which have inspired the new album. ”

“Quantic takes to the 6 Mix decks as part of 6 Music Celebrates South America.
Born in the UK but now based at his Sonido del Valle studio in the highlands of Bogota, Colombia, DJ and producer Quantic, aka Will Holland, takes over the 6 Music airwaves with some of his musical influences, new and old.
Holland has released four albums as Quantic, the latest being Magnetica, which appeared last month. He has also performed and released music under various live projects, such as The Quantic Soul Orchestra and Quantic and his Combo Barbaro. Aside from his own releases, Holland has collaborated with the likes of Mr Scruff and Alice Russell
In this special 6 Mix, Quantic takes us through some of his favourite music from Colombia and beyond.”
