“We start our review of the most popular mixes by the Solid Steel resident DJ’s in 2011, as voted by you the listeners. ‘In no particular order’ we kick off with DJ Cheeba and his mix from February which was also one of our many AV mixes this year, called ‘Revenge Of The Nerd’. A quick fire, attention frying, mash of sure fire club hits, stone cold classics, countless acapellas and turntable tricknology, all set to a visual feast of music videos, pop culture cameos, kung fu interludes and cinematic delights.
Boom Monk Ben’s mix from June got your vote with exclusives from main man Hint, T.Williams dub of Stay Away by Charli XCX, Mia Dora, DJ Zinc and this year’s club anthem ‘Battle for middle you’ by Julio Bashmore.
In hour 2 the DJ Moneyshot mix from May this year shone out for you, with classic hip-hop, pedigree funk and wobbly breaks. Music in the pot from Gramatik, Featurecast and Moneyshot’s Joe Driscoll remix, plus there’s tracks from Run DMC, Vent and DJ Quik.
It was the Ruckus Roboticus ‘Thanksgiving mix’ from November that was a favourite amongst listeners with a musical tribute to all the people and things Ruckus is thankful for everyday (not just on Thanksgiving!). In the mix, are soulful classics from Otis Redding and Spanky Wilson; funky classics from Sly and The Family Stone & Maceo And All The King’s Men; hip-hop from Afrika Bambaataa and Biz Markie; disco from Donald Byrd and William DeVaughn, plus jazz from Melvin Sparks RIP”

“This week we welcome Jackmaster with a mix promoting his Fabric mix CD out this week. After kicking off with Freeze and Janet Jackson we soon slip into some classic house from Adonis and Detroit techno from Underground Resistence, before moving through more recent cuts from Blawan, Pearson Sound, Boddika & Joy O. New music from Hudson Mohawke and a track off the excellent Africa Hitech album also feature and then it’s a trip into rave territory with Awesome 3, before ending with Jay Z and the dubstep classic ‘Midnight Request Line’ from Skream. In hour two we welcome back official Solid Steel resident and undisputed mixtape champ, DJ Moneyshot. This week he hits us upside the dome piece with the Jogging Bottoms mix. In the blender this installment we have another deftly crafted play list of classic hip-hop, pedigree funk and wobbly breaks. New music from Parker and Boca45’s Bee Keepers project and Moneyshot’s Joe Driscoll remix nod to the hear and now, but vintage crate diggin’ in the form of The Beginning Of The End, Run DMC, The Brady Bunch and Ezee Posse doff royally to the blessed old school. We continue our review of 2010 looking back at the most popular mixes by the ‘nu skool’ Solid Steel resident DJ’s, as voted by you the listeners. ‘In no particular order’, we kick off with Boom Monk Ben and a section from his mix back in September, hitting big dubstep tracks with Benga’s remix of Toddla T, Chali 2Na & Rusko, plus ragga flavours from Tanya Stephens and the oh so soulful voice of Erykah Badu given a superb remix by Seiji.

“Cheeba’s mix from February got your votes, with music from Waxfactor, Memory9, and Santogold, alongside music from the Ninja catalogue, where DJ Food and King Cannibal jostle for space with Roots Manuva and Hexstatic. In Hour 2, Ruckus Roboticus gets the nod for his May mix of contemporary beats, hip-hop, and soul to while away your lazy afternoons. Of course J Dilla is in there, lounging alongside Mos Def, Flying lotus and Jay Electronica. DJ Moneyshot’s ‘You Are The Infinity’ mix from February hit the right button, with crisp drum kicks of vintage Jungle added to a hypnotic dose of self-help records, Rock breaks, classic Hip-Hop and downtempo beats. Ann Peacock, Photek, Organized Konfusion, Pixies and Daedelus all get some treatment.”

“This week Ghostbeard adds some heat to the winter chills with a mix leaning heavily on the Ninja Tune XX box-set and some other recent Ninja/Big Dada hotness. We hear music from Bang On, Toddla T and The Bug, all mixed up with some ragga business from Mr Lexx, Busy Signal and Lady Chann, plus Beenie Man’s awesome rip on Kenny Rogers “The Gambler”.
DJ Moneyshot takes charge of hour 2. Using a lifetime of Hip-Hop knowledge, a year of digging, and a solid weekend of slicing and dicing, he’s presents his Deep Covers mix. It’s a jam-packed hour of bands, comedians, DJs and MCs performing tributes, bites, covers and remixes of their favourite Rap jams. So we get the UK’s DUBbledge reworking the hallowed ’93 Till Infinity by Souls of Mischief, Turntablists ’89 Skratch Gangstaz re-cutting Double Dee & Steinski’s Lesson 3, and Barenaked Ladies taking on P’E’s incendiary Fight The Power. Thankfully Duran Duran’s ’95 cover of White Lines was left on the cutting room floor. Nice work, Moneyshot.”

“Solid Steel’s very own DJ Moneyshot shows us once gain why he’s earned the title Mixtape King. No crate is left undug as he works his way through recent Nu-Funk remixes of Duck Sauce’s Barbara Streisand, Vintage Psych Rock from July, and Jungle from mans like Benny Page. It wouldn’t be a Moneyshot set with out some curveballs as standard. Supplied in spades here by aggy Punk singles from The Salford Jets, and the funky chamber music stylings of Andrew Lloyd-Webber. All capped off with a coupla exclusives from Moneyshot himself, soon to see the light of day on his new label home, Proto Hype Records. All in all, boom banging as only our man Moneyshot can do. KouncilHouse takes care of hour 2 with a high octane mix slipping through elements of breaks, dubstep and Drum & Bass with music from Zinc, Atomic Hooligan, D Minds and Pendulum, whilst layering over tracks from Basement Jaxx, Prodigy and Adele. He also features plenty of his own productions and remixes including the excellent remix of Painkiller by Freestylers.”

“Solid Steel in association with Serato (3rd September) This week DJ Self Help’s “clusterfunk” mix is a borderline schizo blend of more genres than you can count on both hands and feet; not for the faint of heart or the closed of mind. No combination of styles is left unexplored, everything from Dancehall-Afrobeat blends to Hip Hop laced over top Brazilian chants, old Soul, noisy Electro, indie rock remixes, and a few of self help’s remixes (Dolly Parton, Bat for Lashes, The Zombies) and original beats thrown in for good measure.

This week it’s all about the dancefloor, as our rum resident takes us through the bpms with his trademark style and pizazz. With Halcali’s J-Pop, Funkdoobiest’s throwback Electro, and cone-melting Dubstep courtesy of High Rankin, it’s a party from the get go. And there aint no party like a Moneyshot party. “This week show it’s Solid Steel resident DJ Moneyshot and his latest epic mix, You Are The Infinity. Looks like he’s put down his trademarked party-starting record bag this week and plumped for a selection from the crate marked ‘deep’. The crisp drum kicks of vintage Jungle get added to a hypnotic dose of self-help records, Rock breaks, classic Hip-Hop and downtempo beats. Wax Doctor, Moby Grape, Organized Konfusion, Pixies and Daedelus all get some treatment. It’s a headphone odyssey!
Also this week our downunder connections keep representing, as Melbourne selector Mr Nice steps up with his second Solid Steel contribution. To showcase the kind of dance floor cheek he brews at his ‘Pickled Beats’ nights in the city he’s invited you all along to a tea party. In the mix we have two lumps of The Nextmen and splashes of Bob Marley and Public Enemy, all lovingly stirred in with Parker and Black Grass. Definitely a refreshing blend, and good to the last drop.”

“Solid Steel in association with Serato (25th December) We finish our review of 2009 looking back at the most popular mixes by the ‘nu skool’ Solid Steel residents, as voted by you the listeners.
‘In no particular order’, we kick off with DJ Cheeba and the audio part of his AV mix from September. Cutting up music (+visuals) from the Beastie Boys, Roots Manuva, Thunderheist and even Yo Gabba Gabba, it was your favourite mix from his contribution this year.
Boom Monk Ben got most votes for his November mix featuring bass heavy tracks from Starkey, Bassnectar, Rusko and the huge Joy Orbison, plus a cheeky bootleg of Dead Prez and retro edits of James Brown and Fats Waller.
You liked the Ruckus Roboticus mix from May which included his own excellent remix of Pase Rock, along with Chico Mann, Flying Lotus and Caetano Veloso.
It was DJ Moneyshot’s “Check Your Head” mix that stood out for you from his many fine contributions. Taking all the original beats from the classic Beastie Boys album he loops, re-edits and layers them into a mind-blowing odyssey, with Barrington Levy, Dr. John and The Fearless Four all featuring.”

“Solid Steel in association with Serato (30th October) This week DK continues with more recent releases from Bassnectar, Captain Planet, last weeks guest Pablo and Robert Strauss featuring the legendary Leroy Burgess. It’s spiritual jazz from Doug Carn and his cover of Higher Ground, Polish breaks from Jerzy Milian and more from Kid Koala’s project, The Slew.
DJ Moneyshot is piped on board with a suitably nautical theme as he joins DK, DJ Food, Hexstatic, King Cannibal and DJ Cheeba tonight at the Thekla in Bristol. It’s a club in a boat and his mix hauls in every conceivable track to commemorate the event, including of course, Lonely Island’s “I’m on a boat”.
Sticking with themes, hour 2 is given over to Mischa Hully (also known as C0pyr1gh7) who gives us a spooky Halloween mix featuring Marilyn Manson, King Cannibal, Zombi and The Specials.”
