Cosmin TRG + Sugai Ken – Solid Steel Show 2017-11-03

“Solid Steel (3rd November) In Hour 1 we have Cosmin TRG, who has been producing music for over a decade on labels like Hemlock, Running Back, Rush Hour, 50 Weapons and he had the honour of being the first release on Hessle Audio as TRG. His latest release Afterburn / Electra is his second on his Sportiv label and he told us;
“With this mix I attempt a conversation between different schools of thought, perspectives on sound and templates for the future. In many ways it’s a mood board for where my head is right now, which is a lot of places simultaneously. There’s a hint of classic and modern tribal rhythmic, hypnotic activity, the exploration of intensity. I imagine it as a hyper loop train from Detroit to Bristol, The Hague to Moscow, Bucharest to Berlin.”
In Hour 2 it’s Sugai Ken with a “Japanese Avant-elektriciteit & Hypocotyl Mix with SolidSteel”. The Japanese composer recently released his album UkabazUmorezU
on RVNG Intl which incorporates field recordings into his music in such an exquisite way and has picked up attention from the likes of Pitchfork and FACT, as well as a track featured on Midland’s FABRICLIVE mix. He had this to say about his mix;
“I made this mix from rare Japanese musique-concrete tracks and Japanese folklore soundscapes. I respect the creativity of legendary Japanese pioneers.””

Eclair Fifi + FYI Chris – Solid Steel Show 2017-05-19

“Our guest in Hour 1 this week is Eclair Fifi one of the founding figures behind the excellent LuckyMe label. The Scottish artist and illustrator started DJing at 16-years-old on pirate radio at InterFACE FM in London, and has since gone to host an In New DJs we Trust residency on BBC Radio 1. Her last project was a series of classic Italo, House and Latin Freestyle reissues with another on the way next month and you can catch her playing all night with special guests to celebrate the release on the 22nd of June at Rye Wax in London. She told us;
“I recorded this mix straight after I’d just got back from The Highlands in Scotland this week.. the clean air, sunshine and mountains directly inspired it! I purposely picked happy songs.. I dug up a few old favourites as well as some new stuff I’m loving right now. Play it loud in the sun :-)”
Taking care of Hour 2 is FYI Chris who recently released their Snafubar 12″ on Rhythm Section INTL and Synthetic Jungle on Banoffee Pies. The Peckham duo consisting of two Chris’s – Chris Watson and Chris Coupe have also released on Church, Lionoil Industries and are just about to drop their first self release on their own label ‘West Friends’ that they run with Tom Unlikley from Rye Wax. They had this to say about their mix;
“This mix is a little selection of what Me & Watson have been working on in the last few months. There’s some collaborations with some close mates and some of our Fav released tunes slipped in there. We make music pretty much every week so it’s nice to piece it all together into a little mixtape. It’s a pleasure that you guys wanted to publish it. Thanks!””

Lone + Konx-om-Pax – Solid Steel Show 2016-05-20

“In Hour 1 we’re delighted to welcome back Lone to Solid Steel for his 3rd time on the show. He first appeared in 2007 as part of Kids In Tracksuits and then again as Lone in 2009, and you can hear both mixes at SolidSteel.net . Lone’s albums and live sets have touched a lot of musical ground. He’s demonstrated his long-standing love of 90s hip hop, passing penchant for the bright lights and sounds of hardcore alongside his career defining old school house releases. All steeped in nostalgia whilst bringing a dance floor ready sound from the in-between places of your consciousness, making you feel warm and fuzzy without quite knowing why. His latest mix for Solid Steel perfectly showcases what his club sets are sounding like and he had this to say about his mix;
“I wanted to put together a club friendly mix for Solid Steel, something containing a bunch of the sort of tunes I’m playing out at the moment. Having said that, I didn’t want to go completely one way like that, so I tried to put something together that could work just as easily as a home listening mix – it was fun trying to bridge that gap. I also saw this as a good excuse to showcase a bunch of forthcoming material from our MagicWire label, so there’s quite a few exclusives here… even some stuff I’m working on under a different name….”
In Hour 2 it’s Planet Mu artist Konx-om-Pax, who is also the man responsible for Lone’s amazing visuals and artwork. His album Caramel is released in July and is “influenced in some ways by touring the world with Lone doing visuals and DJing, but also from simply listening to old rave tapes and taking in the warmth and energy.” His artwork and visuals are equally impressive having worked with Warp Records, Brainfeeder, Hyperdub, DFA Records, No-Fun Productions and Optimo Espacio. He told us;
“Lots of friends of ours have been releasing wicked records recently. I wanted to create a mix that reflected this and feature music from my new record coming out on Planet Mu in July. Mark Pritchard send me his record a while ago, he’s been working on it a since we last hung out a few years ago in Sydney. Clarks new one is one of the best he’s ever done, he’s really a master of his craft and maturing well, artistically anyways haha. Most of the mix is quite dark and subdued then I ramp things up with a burst of techno energy at the end. Gamma Player has to be my favourite Mills track ever.””

Mike Paradinas + Ital Tek – Solid Steel Show 2016-04-22

“This week it’s a Planet Mu takeover and in Hour 1 we’re delighted to welcome label boss Mike Paradinas, who has been constantly pushing boundaries with the label and under his moniker ?-Ziq for well over two decades. His contribution to electronic music is incredible when you look at just some of the names that have appeared on Planet Mu, such as DJ Nate, Mr Mitch, Kuedo, Terror Danjah, Meat Beat Manifesto, Benga, Neil Landstrumm, FaltyDL, DJ Rashad, Luke Vibert, Machinedrum and Floating Points. We’re lucky to get a preview of forthcoming material on the label and he told us;
“This is a mix I did when I had a free day. I just went through the last two months of additions to my itunes and used that as a starting point. I’ve been compiling Kuedo’s new album in the last few weeks so there are a few early versions of what will appear on that, and some tracks by Wwwings who we are releasing an EP of. Outtakes from the new JGB album (J.G. Biberkopf) on Knives and some new Ekoplekz and Herva tracks.”
In Hour two we welcome back Ital Tek who appeared on Solid Steel in 2012 and has been a firm fixture on Planet Mu since his debut release in 2007. He did a track with Mike Paradinas as ‘Mick & Alan’ in 2013 and his latest album ‘Hollowed’ was released last month. He had this to say about his mix;
“Here is a mix showcasing a few tracks from my new album ‘Hollowed’ alongside some of my favourite recent and upcoming releases. Newly released material from some of my label mates at Planet Mu, a favourite of mine from the great new Ash Koosha album on Ninja Tune, tracks from the awesome new records by Clark and Roly Porter and a couple of unreleased pieces from my brother Edward. I’ve included ‘Night Traffic’ by Paul Lansky who has been an influence on me over the years and an untitled new ambient track of mine.””

Modeselektor + Benjamin Damage – Solid Steel Show 2015-12-04

“Solid Steel in association with Serato (4th December) With the closure of the iconic Berlin record label 50 Weapons, it’s seems only right to hand over Solid Steel for a special double bill featuring label founders, Modeselektor and the artist that released the final album, Benjamin Damage. Modeselektor are up first with music from the label by Truncate, Untold, Atoms for Peace and Bambounou, plus tracks from Gabi, Ben Zimmerman and Benge. The German duo told us;
“50WEAPONS has been sort of a house that we built. A house for artists and their creative output. Now it’s time to leave that house, but the house will always stay open. Open for anyone who needs inspiration or motivation. We are proud of each and every artist who developed their style using 50WEAPONS as an outlet, just the same way as we are proud of every release that has graced our and your turntables. This mix is one of many pillars of the legacy of 50WEAPONS that will hopefully live on forever. Hardcore will never die!””

Solid Steel in association with Serato (22nd May) In Hour 2 we hand over to No Symbols head honcho Beneath who told us this about his mix;
“Some tracks Ive been playing on radio and in clubs recently condensed down into an hour including forthcoming tracks from Laksa, Batu and Gaunt on my label Mistry and some forthcoming bits on Berceuse Heroique including a track from my Schlocky EP that is due to be released soon. Hope you enjoy!” You can grab his Schlocky EP on the 14th June!”

Rob Booth + Luke Vibert – Solid Steel Show 2015-05-08

Big up Rob Booth!!! 🙂
“Rob Booth steps up in Hour 1 with a mix celebrating 2 years of the excellent Houndstooth record label, where he heads up A & R and he also runs the well respected Electronic explorations podcast. Another Falty DL Solid Steel intro starts the show and Rob had this to say about his mix;
“I wanted to present the mix in two parts, the Solid Steel way. The 1st half showcases repertoire primarily from the 1st eighteen months, no better way than starting with our inaugural record, the Present Tense 12” by Call Super, such an exciting artist culminating with his recent critically acclaimed debut album. Of course I also had to include a few tracks from the Soul Music LP, Paul Woolford’s Special Request moniker, especially the Hackney Parrot VIP, coupled with the polished jungle/techno experimentalism of Akkord and the 160bpm mosaic of Throwing Snow.
As the mix enters the 2nd half the emphasis moves to our latest signings, Berlin based Marquis Hawkes, Norwegian duo Soft as Snow and LA duo 18+, who’ve kept us busy this past year with the mix concluding with Jassy Graz on vocals, a personal favourite, was so good to see Ross and Jassy invited to Maida Vale LIVE for Radio 1. I can’t stress enough the privilege of being on SS, I’ve been archiving these shows for so long now””
In Hour 2 it’s Luke Vibert, a man of many monikers including Wagon Christ, Plug, Amen Andrews and Kerrier District, under which he recently released an album entitled 4 on Hypercolour. This is the first Kerrier District album in over 10 years since the Rephlex release back in 2004. Luke has been a guest at Solid Steel club nights over the years and this is his 5th mix, his music has been a firm fixture on the show for over 20 years. He’s even turned out a version of the Solid Steel intro especially for us and not for the first time either. And so on to his mix for this week, with artist titles such as Ragga Houston, Drexipan and AFX Jackson, you know as always with Luke Vibert, you’re in for something unexpected. When asked to sum up his mix, he simply said;
“It’s sum of my stupid mash-ups put together!””

Four Tet + Anthony Naples – Solid Steel Show 2015-05-01

Four Tet:
“My latest Solid Steel mix uses music from all over the world but most of it chosen because it sounds like it comes from another world. These are all older records and things I have been listening to recently and have discovered on my endless search for music.”
In Hour 2 we welcome Anthony Naples to to Solid Steel. His album Body Pill came out on TEXT Records recently and he has also released music on Mister Saturday Night, Rubadub and The Trilogy Tapes. Once again no track list, but a killer selection to kick start your weekend. This is what he told us;
“What up, world? thanks for listening. This is just a mix of heaters for the summer months. Skip your exams or whatever, put this on your Beats Pill and enjoy stay hydrated with your friends and loved ones.”

“Solid Steel in association with Serato (24th April) This week we launch a brand new Solid Steel website at solidsteel.net and we’re delighted to welcome back two guests Caribou and Colleen with exclusive new mixes to celebrate. They both appeared in the same show 10 years ago and on the new website you can hear their 2005 mixes in the Featured section, along with Caribou’s mix from 2000 when he was still known as Manitoba. Also released this week will be a mix from Matthew Herbert as Doctor Rockit (1995), Autechre mix (1997) and a Juan Atkins mix and interview from 1988, plus selected shows from the last 27 years and many more to come each week.

Legowelt + DJ Food – Solid Steel Show 2015-01-23

“Solid Steel (23rd January) Our guest in Hour 1 is Legowelt, a man of many guises, but it’s his most well known alias that delivers an exclusive mix for Solid Steel. He said this about his mix;
“A lot of unreleased stuff all over the place, mixed on the fly in a crude energetic manner on my old 80s Inkel mixer with built in analog delay recorded on a reel tape deck on slow speed. The music is a bit melancholic, a bit romantic, for grim overcast days of snow and rain with some sun rays coming in occasionally…. a prelude to the spring. Slowly mixing towards a happier vibe. No shallow dumb inbred shit for “Blokes” this is for mad dealers and freaks!”
DJ Food returns to the Magpie Music theme he started last year with a second mix collecting a host of his favourite tracks from 2014 in an extended mix. Heavy beats, fuzz bass, rockist guitars and analogue synths are the rich pickings that the Magpie furnishes its nest with as well as a healthy dose of underground Hip Hop. Food favourites Jane Weaver, Temples and Ghost of a Sabre Tooth Tiger get several selections as well as Gas Giant (friend of Solid Steel, Bristol’s Awkward under an alias). There’s even a psychedelic Four Seasons track in there…”

Diplo + DK – Solid Steel Show 2014-12-05

“Solid Steel (5th December) It’s a huge show this week as we welcome back Diplo to Solid Steel. 10 years ago Diplo released his album Florida on Big Dada and played his first UK gig in an intimate venue at the monthly Solid Steel club night (and twice more that year). He plays somewhat larger venues now, including a residency in Las Vegas and Madison Square Garden on NYE. To celebrate the reissue of F10RIDA, he drops a mix exclusively for Solid Steel which features the new Eprom remix of Big Lost from the album, plus music across the board from Deadboy, Radiohead, Pharcyde, Kaytranada, Heaven 17 and our very own Bonobo.
In Hour 2, DK takes a look back at some of the releases in 2014 from the Ninja Tune family of labels, kicking off with two Big Dada heavyweights from Run The Jewels and Wiley, plus label mates Kate Tempest and the Mercury Prize winning Young Fathers. There’s music from artists playing at the massive Ninja Tune x Hydra party on Saturday 6th Dec, with Machinedrum, The Bug, Actress, Martyn, Illum Sphere, Falty DL and headliner Bonobo, plus plenty of remixes from the likes of Four Tet, Budgie, Lone, Eprom, Max Graef and Seven Davis Jr. Brainfeeder is represented by Teebs, Taylor McFerrin, Daedelus and Mr Oizo, whilst Kutmah and Name Brand Sound fly the flag for Technicolour, and Nick Hook, Romare and Beat Spacek make up the current crop of releases on Ninja Tune.”

Tessela + Druid Cloak – Solid Steel Show 2014-11-28

“This week in Hour 1 it’s Tessela in the mix with a live recording for us from a recent festival. He’s had a residency on Radio 1, releases on R & S, Punch Drunk & Poly Kicks and a string of remixes, including last month’s excellent ‘Aztec Chant’ remix for recent guest Peverelist. We don’t have a track list, but we do know it’s a tough mix and features tracks from Jerome Hill, Dan Physics, Helena Hauff and Floorplan. He told us;
“This mix was recorded live at Austria’s Elevate Festival in a long stone tunnel carved into a hill for use as an air raid shelter during the second world war. Source Direct was in charge of the lighting”
In hour 2 we hand over to Druid Cloak who released his debut album ‘Lore : Book One’ last week, and is part of a trilogy of albums to be released on his own Apothecary Compositions label. His remixes include Kastle, Ryan Hemsworth and Claude Speed and this mix takes us through music from Objekt, Arca, FIS and recent guests Distal and Second Storey, plus our own Machinedrum, Dorian Concept and Lukid. He had this to say about his mix;
“I decided to play alot of music that i am inspired by with nice breaths of beatless compositions to make for a mix that varies in pace, moods and style. I am a huge proponent of a genre-less outlook in music and i think this mix speaks to that idea.””

Peverelist + Daisuke Tanabe – Solid Steel Show 2014-10-24

“Solid Steel (24th October) Peverelist is our guest in Hour 1, an artist at the forefront of Bristol’s electronic music scene, runs the excellent Punch Drunk label and is one third of Livity Sound, alongside recent guest Kowton and Asusu. The mix includes a track from the forthcoming compilation ‘Livity Sound Remixes’ which is out on November 3rd, and this is what he had to say;
“When i record a mix I usually grab the records I’ve been vibing on recently and make it up as i go along. This one turned out a bit more techno flavoured than maybe usual, but has a few more UK oriented bits too, i usually like to mix it up like that. There’s a few new tracks in there and some old classics too…”
Following his recent release on Ki, we welcome back Japanese producer Daisuke Tanabe, who last appeared as one half of Kidsuke alongside Kidkanevil. The former Red Bull Music Academy participant told us this;
“I basically made this mix for a relaxed train ride. It’s music I like to listen to while being on packed trains during the rush hours in Tokyo. I often have to be in this awkward situation and for me this is the perfect music to stay calm even though being in an super crowded place that usually stresses me out. Hope you enjoy it””

Rob da Bank + Moiré – Solid Steel Show 2014-10-03

“Solid Steel (3rd October) It’s a pleasure to welcome Rob da Bank to Solid Steel. He was at Radio 1 for over a decade before moving to 6 Music, the founder of Bestival and Sunday Best Recordings and played at the Solid Steel club night in 2004. This is what he said about his mix;
‘I get pretty bored DJing if i can only play one style, which you can definitely tell in this mix. It’s more of a collage of old and new tracks I might play as a warm up set than a seamless mix. i actually much prefer being the warm up dj and being able to play loads of styles. The pressure’s off and you can go off kilter. The trip takes in vintage electronica from the likes of Mixmaster Morris, Aphex and Squarepusher, some old trip hoppy bits, brand spanking new electronic fire from Redinho, Bonobo and Clark and a few classics from the likes of DJ Mink and LFO – its a mix for a boring car journey or a night drinking whisky round a campfire…it starts off slow and noodly and somehow ends up pounding and fist pumping…like all the best parties.’
In Hour 2 we hand over to Moire, who recently released his debut album ‘Shelter’ on the Werkdiscs label run by Actress. It’s a mix recorded and remixed live on a hardware sampler and features music from Kerri Chandler, Rongetz, Space Dimension Controller and Aphrodisiac.”
