Fatboy Slim – Resident Advisor Exchange podcast RA.EX349 2017-04-13

“English DJs don’t come much bigger than Norman Cook. Alongside contemporaries like The Chemical Brothers, Cook combined memories of the Beatles, punk, acid house and a devil-may-care attitude into the crossover phenomenon christened big beat. It was named after Cook’s own club night, where he says he used to play hip-hop at 45rpm and acid tracks on 33. But what was initially about breaking rules became a formula, and Cook consciously stepped back from the hype after a string of albums that spawned ubiquitous chart hits like “Right Here, Right Now” and “Praise You,” which are still embedded in brains to this day.
Though you might know the hits, on-stage antics and Hawaiian shirts, Cook cut his teeth in an age when DJs were considered just above the glass collector in the club’s hierarchy. But by the early 2000s, Cook was unknowingly laying the template for the DJ as a main stage festival draw, which later came to fruition in the American EDM phenomenon. Carlos Hawthorn travelled to Brighton to ask Cook what it’s like playing to 360,000 people, apologising to Burial and keeping up with the new generation of superstar DJs.”

Visible Cloaks – Resident Advisor podcast #560 2017-02-20

“Beyond the Fourth World.
Visible Cloaks’ mix from 2010, Fairlights, Mallets and Bamboo — Fourth-world Japan, years 1980-1986 was a gateway into an enthralling subset of Japanese music. The selection sounded electronic and futuristic yet organic and ancient, experimental and exploratory yet accessible and warm. It seemed to emanate from a place that couldn’t be pinned down geographically, emanating instead from an unknown place in the imagination.
This is brought to life in startling fashion on Ryan Carlile and Spencer Doran’s latest LP for RVNG Intl, Reassemblage, a record both wary of exoticism and informed by non-Western music, particularly that of Japan. The title is taken from a film by Trinh T. Minh-ha, which emphasised the impossibility of directly understanding other cultures. Visible Cloaks’ music takes a similar course, condensing the energy of disparate global influences into a sound world that uses gaps in understanding and modern sound design to create something new.
Visible Cloaks’ RA podcast is a continuation of this thinking. Drawing heavily on big names in Japanese music like Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Sakamoto, a rich narrative is stitched together by interspersing masters of European concrète, American avant-garde eccentrics and Chicago house artists. Despite spanning disparate decades and nations, the thread passing through the mix is undeniably futuristic.”

Egyptrixx – Resident Advisor podcast #558 2017-02-06

“The Canadian artist drops a deliciously warped club mix.
On Psutka’s RA podcast, we enter a zone where the music of DJ Deeon, Nisennenmondai, Jeremy Greenspan and Mark Fell happily coexists. The club is at the heart of the mix, but at any given moment, a mind-bending passage of experimental electronics is never far away.”

Inga Mauer – Resident Advisor podcast #557 2017-01-30

“One of our favourite new DJs steps up.
For lots of touring DJs, travel is something to be endured, a means to an end. But for the Russian DJ Inga Mauer, travel is something to be embraced and to be influenced by. She hosts a show called Bon Voyage for Radio Cómeme, and on each episode she compiles a playlist with a particular place or person in mind. (She dedicated her first show to the 19th century Russian explorer Nicholas Miklouho-Maclay, and she’s talked proudly about having no fixed address.) Bon Voyage spans an impressively vast range of styles, but Mauer seems particularly drawn to a lineage of industrial, EBM, new wave and techno. Her tastes were shaped growing up in isolation in a remote Russian village. She became a dedicated follower of Bunker Records, Cybernetic Broadcasting System (which later became Intergalactic.fm) and other outlets for leftfield electronic music. This made her a good fit for Stackenschneider (or Stacken, as it’s known locally), the tiny club in St. Petersburg where Mauer became a resident DJ and began honing her craft. By 2016, word of her talents had spread and Mauer was travelling regularly, playing at highly respected clubs like Panorama Bar, De School, Nitsa, OHM and Kaiku. It also helped that after years spent working away in the studio she put out her first release, From Cologne To Clone, six grinding machine jams for the Hivern Discs sub-label HVNX. Next week, she’ll follow it up with an excellent 12-inch for Shtum, further fuelling the sense that Mauer is destined for big things.
We get yet more proof of this on Mauer’s RA podcast. The mix is both a strange and alluring trip through her tastes and a fantastic example of how a dance floor can be moved through unconventional sounds.”

Moscoman – Resident Advisor podcast #555 2017-01-16

“The rising Israeli artist spans decades and continents.
His RA podcast sums up his varied musical interests, mixing up post-punk, mid-tempo zoners, edits of music from Russia and Brazil and his own unreleased material. Early in the mix, we hear the voice of Leonard Cohen, the late icon of Jewish cool, a nod to the rich tradition Moscovici aims to advance. If you’re in London on January 28th, you’ll be able to catch Moscovici playing the Disco Halal showcase at Pickle Factory.”

Craig Richards – Resident Advisor podcast #554 2017-01-09

“The fabric resident drops three hours of heat.
We’ve wanted to host a mix from Richards since the RA podcast began back in 2006, but we can say with certainty that it’s been worth the wait. Like pretty much all of his DJ sets since fabric opened, RA.554 epitomises the philosophy that you don’t need pyrotechnics to make your mark. This is three hours of deep, groovy and nuanced dance music from a master of the form. ”

Mark Barrott – Resident Advisor podcast #553 2017-01-02

“Ease in New Year the Balearic way.
Barrott’s RA podcast draws on his experiences playing at La Torre and the changing seasons in Ibiza. The mood is tranquil and the purview is vast, with Philip Glass, Project Pablo, David Sylvian and Talk Talk all appearing in this 70-minute session. It’s a mix that fuels the idea that Balearic is less a sound and more a feeling.”

Loxy – Resident Advisor podcast #543 2016-10-24

“Deadly drum n bass from one of the genre’s finest DJs.
Loxy, AKA Andrew Campbell, has been in and around drum & bass since its inception in the early ’90s. He’s followed the genre’s evolutions and has helped some of these evolutions along. As a producer, he’s released on big-ticket labels like Metalheadz, Renegade Hardware and Architecture. He’s also a renowned DJ, his resume including a residency at the legendary Blue Note in London. More recently, with the relaunch of his Cylon Recordings label, which has put out tracks from Dan HabarNam, Clarity and Beastie Respond, as well as a scene-defining compilation, he’s once again been pushing drum & bass forward.”

Beautiful Swimmers – Resident Advisor podcast #542 2016-10-17

“The DC duo get the party started.
If you’re ever feeling down on dance music, go to a Beautiful Swimmers gig. Andrew Field-Pickering (AKA Max D) and Ari Goldman have been going back-to-back since the late ’00s, and they’re among the most animated DJs in the game, hammering home the fun and physicality of their selections by dancing and wearing ear-to-ear smiles. They’re also serious record collectors—when they’re not traveling, Goldman and Field-Pickering work in record stores, and their time spent in the bins shows in their sets. Over the years, the duo have used house music as a foundation to explore Baltimore club, jungle, post-punk and other unclassifiable delights. Goldman and Field-Pickering also both run labels. Field-Pickering’s Future Times began as an outlet for the tightknit DC scene, but as his reputation as a DJ and producer has developed, so has the label’s scope, with respected acts like Magic Mountain High, Jack J, Shanti Celeste and Steve Summers all appearing in recent years. Goldman’s label, World Building, only launched last month, but through the excellent Mark Seven single The Fatal Flaw In Disco it’s hit the ground running.”

DJ Spider – Resident Advisor podcast #538 2016-09-19

“Deadly sonics from a prolific US producer.
DJ Spider’s style is so well-honed that you could analyse it through practically any of his releases. Take The Final Revolution, his next 12-inch. It’s pretty dark, right? That’s usually the first word people reach for when discussing his music. You’ll notice, however, on tracks like “Extropy” and “NEXT,” that he likes to let a little light in. On “Throwing Hairs” and “Distress Signal” you’ll hear Spider’s knack for weird sound design. The first features what could be someone dragging a pickaxe across gravel; on the second there’s simply a car alarm going off in the background. Hypnosis is recurring theme in Spider’s work, and we get that on “The Final Revolution.” Listen to the way the bass and the percussion interact—it’s the kind of groove that glues you to the floor.”

Surgeon – Resident Advisor Exchange podcast RA.EX319 2016-09-15

“We check in with one of UK techno’s founding fathers.
Anthony Child has been DJing since 1992, and making music for even longer than that. He was there at the birth of UK techno, as both a producer for the Downwards label and a resident DJ at Birmingham’s famously intense House Of God party. Since those early days he’s remained at the vanguard of techno, developing a style that often prefers broken beats to straight ones. There’s long been fluidity between his DJ sets and live performance, something’s that’s marked him out as an unmistakable presence in clubs and at festivals. His back catalogue, meanwhile, contains crucial records for labels like Downwards and Tresor as well as his own outlets, Dynamic Tension and Counterbalance.
In 2016, three decades into his career, he continues to surprise and innovate. In the past year he’s put out an album recorded in the Hawaiian jungle, helped Blueprint start its 20th anniversary year and released an LP of modular techno titled From Farthest Known Objects.
When he spoke to Aaron Coultate at this year’s Dekmantel Festival in Amsterdam, Child explained why live improvisation is his current obsession. He also reflected on the experiences that have shaped him, from his residencies at House Of God and Tresor to his wide-ranging solo work and collaborations with the likes of Regis, Blawan and Lady Starlight.”

James Ruskin – Resident Advisor podcast #537 2016-09-12

“A UK techno hero steps up.
James Ruskin is a cornerstone of UK techno. He emerged in the mid-’90s as the style was in the midst of a famously fertile period, thanks to trailblazing releases from labels such as Downwards, Peacefrog and Soma Quality Recordings. Ruskin and Richard Polson, who sadly passed away in 2006, arrived with their own label, Blueprint, in 1996. Taking cues from Underground Resistance and the influential Birmingham aesthetic, the pair explored a raw, barrelling sound that immediately caught traction with DJs at home and abroad, cementing Blueprint’s place as one of UK techno’s key labels. It remains one 20 years later, with a catalogue that includes much-loved work from the likes of Oliver Ho, Surgeon and, more recently, Lakker and Samuel Kerridge.”

The Exaltics – Resident Advisor podcast #536 2016-09-05

“Timeless electro.
There’s a popular line of thinking that says real electro is never in or out of fashion—it’s always there, doing its thing in the background. While there may be an element of truth to this, it does feel like electro is in a particularly strong place right now. Objekt and Gesolten Cirkel are finding fresh angles on the sound. Old hands like DJ Stingray, E.R.P., Versalife, Radioactive Man and Heinrich Mueller’s various projects are still releasing vital music, while labels like Central Processing Unit, Frustrated Funk, Shipwrec and Crème Organization supply the scene’s DJs with a steady stream of high-quality vinyl.”

Mix Mup – Resident Advisor podcast #534 2016-08-22

“Machine funk from an under-the-radar favourite.
Lorenz Lindner is a German artist with a small-but-loyal fan base who love him for his unconventional club tracks. His sound is slippery and hard to define, lurking on the outskirts of house and techno. His peculiar talents have gradually gained attention in recent years, but Lindner has in fact been releasing records since the early 2000s. There’s not much stylistic crossover between 2003’s DJ Of Higher Quality and 2015’s Skip Intro, but in that early record you can hear some of the machine-funk that would later define his work. It’s an aesthetic Lindner shares with Kassem Mosse, his frequent collaborator. The pair have become a formidable duo, playing improvised live sets together and releasing standout records for The Trilogy Tapes, MM/KM and Have You Seen Them. “‘MM KM End To Funk’ seems to me one of the most original electronic tracks of recent years,” said one Discogs user earlier this year, and the track is indeed a great MM/KM case study. There are sections that like a sloppy DJ mix, but the execution is somehow beguiling; amidst a blur of off-kilter loops, a louche bass note keeps some semblance of order, lumbering beneath a synth string that could have come from an Underground Resistance record. Lindner has been equally adventurous in his solo work, which has landed on respected labels like Hinge Finger, The Trilogy Tapes, Mikrodisko and Meakusma, a run of 12-inches that will be overlooked by the many and cherished by the few.”
RA.534 shows that Lindner is also a skilled selector. The more esoteric edges of his productions are softened here, as he guides us through 59-minutes of opaque and enveloping club music.
