Lunice – Resident Advisor podcast #432

“Montreal’s Lunice Fermin Pierre II is a core member of the LuckyMe crew. He’s long been known for blending rap with cross-genre dance music, and his exaggerated movements behind the decks are as talked about as the sets themselves. But Lunice’s greatest achievement to date is his hook-up with Scottish producer Hudson Mohawke as TNGHT. The two made one of the trap movement’s defining tracks (“Higher Ground”), and they were eventually tapped by Kanye West to lend their distinct, horn-heavy sound to his album Yeezus, on its centrepiece “Blood On The Leaves.””

Luke Abbott – Resident Advisor podcast #427

“Luke Abbott likes mistakes. They give his music the additional depth of a human touch. He’s the type of artist who allows his drums to drift out of time. His notes are sometimes off, and you can often hear the hiss of tape noise in his tracks. Abbott once found the MIDI controllers he was using unsatisfactory, so he built his own. (He’s also fond of assembling synthesizers.) At the heart of his music is a modular system—Abbott values its versatility and unpredictability. On two albums and a handful of EPs, Abbott has brought all of this to bear, creating a catalogue of rich and unconventionally pretty music that’s best described as modern kosmische. It’s a sound him and James Holden, whose Border Community label has released both of Abbott’s albums, specialise in. Abbott’s latest album, Wysing Forest, which was released in June, was written during a musician-in-residence programme he completed at the Wysing Arts Centre in Cambridgeshire. The record is mostly based on live recordings and improvisation, an approach that yielded nine deliciously freeform tracks that rank among his most unique and personal work.
Abbott has never been a DJ, but that hasn’t stopped him creating a strikingly beautiful podcast for us, blending his influences with some of his like-minded contemporaries.”

Dusky – Resident Advisor podcast #423

“Since the beginning, Alfie Granger-Howell and Nick Harriman have made a habit of bridging worlds. Their earliest work split the difference between lush progressive house and UK bass music, with hits like “Lost Highway” and “Flo Jam” leading the charge. Since then, they’ve weaved various sonic threads through their sound, from techno to electro to the breakbeat influence you can just detect on Love Taking Over, the first EP on their new label, 17 Steps, which is released next week.
In that time, Dusky have become one of the biggest club acts on the planet, with one of the busiest touring schedules out there. The duo’s RA podcast shows off their wide-ranging appeal, folding techno artists likes Slam, Truncate and Alex Smoke in with the heady broken beats of Benton and the usual deep house suspects. It’s obvious that Dusky have been growing as DJs—this set goes from an amble to a sprint without batting an eye. ”

Lone – Resident Advisor podcast #420

Yay, more Lone.
“Instead of a biography on Lone’s Discogs page there’s a quote from the Warp artist Bibio. “I could spot a Lone track by hearing one or two bars,” he says. This was written around the time of Lemurian, Matt Cutler’s first album as Lone, but it’s just as true today. Put simply, Cutler’s music has always been upbeat. He started out making hip-hop on labels like Dealmaker and Werk Discs, and then later moved to a rave-influenced house sound—the rhythms have evolved, but his impossibly vibrant melodic palette has loosely stayed the same. On his standout tracks like “Once In A While,” “Pineapple Crush,” “Lying In The Reeds” and last year’s “Airglow Fires,” he took early UK dance music’s most sun-drenched tropes and shot them through a modern lens. The ever on-point R&S Records took note, and in 2012 they released Galaxy Garden, Cutler’s fourth album. This week its follow-up, Reality Testing, dropped through R&S, and it sees Cutler unite the old with the new: the record is a blend of house and hip-hop that’s bound by Cutler’s singular sense of nostalgia. ”

Mo Kolours – Resident Advisor podcast #408

This one looks really interesting! Credit to Resident Advisor for putting out something a bit different in their podcast series.
“Few artists manage to make waves as quickly as Mo Kolours has. The half-English, half-Mauritian singer and producer, real name Joseph Deenmamode, released his first EP in 2011, but by then he’d already been discovered by Gilles Peterson, who booked him for a live session on the BBC. His self-titled debut album, which didn’t come out until today, has been hailed by The Guardian as one of the year’s best and has completely sold out via pre-order on vinyl and CD.”

Jimmy Edgar – Resident Advisor podcast #401

RA putting out another interesting mix!
“Magic, clairvoyance, supernatural passions, interstellar envoys—Jimmy Edgar’s biography makes it plain that he’s operating beyond our earthly realm. He’s recently found a way to merge these lines of alternative thinking with his work in music and art: his label Ultramajic is, by his description, a “holistic multi-sensory experience.” It’s a place where he can release his increasingly techno-influenced music, and present, in collaboration with the designer Pilar Zeta, an otherworldly visual aesthetic that’s influenced by old science fiction magazines like Omni.”

AnD – Resident Advisor podcast #398

“Blistering techno and beyond.
AnD’s records are as flinty and brutal as anything you’re likely to find this side of gabba. The Manchester duo’s propulsive, distorted brand of techno places them among the current crop of UK producers combining sheer force with groove and funk. Their fascination with the harder end of techno can be traced back to their 2011 Untitled 12-inch on Black Sun Records—an unapologetically banging release with kick drums that ran hot like a soldering iron across sheet metal. Since then they’ve appeared on labels such as Modal Analysis, Brothers and Delsin offshoot Ann Aimee, with each record seemingly crammed with more force than the one before. Kundalini, their latest EP, is released this week through Electric Deluxe.
RA.398 is a celebration of this harder, faster approach, with tracks from the duo’s contemporaries alongside vintage cuts from Regis, Jeff Mills and Robert Hood.”

Rene Hell – Resident Advisor podcast #397

“We begin 2014 in the PAN artist’s sound world.
Rene Hell is the primary recording alias of ambient and experimental artist Jeff Witscher. Under the name, Witscher has produced a dizzying body of work, much of which has been released on cassette through his own Agents Of Chaos label. If you’re familiar with Witscher’s music, there’s a good chance you came to him through The Terminal Symphony, his 2011 full-length on Type. The album was, in the main, a beatless examination of synthesised repetition that was often breathlessly pretty. Its often challenging follow up, Vanilla Call Option, was released in September on Bill Kouligas’s PAN—”on close listening it presents moments of stark, bewildering beauty,” said RA’s Josh Hall at the time. Rene Hell is Witscher’s most visible pseudonym but it’s by no means his only one. Seek out his wide array music as Secret Abuse, Abelar Scout, Impregnable or Marble Sky, and his work in groups such as Deep Jew, Trash Dog and Foot Village.”

Leif – Resident Advisor podcast #394

“Deep Welsh house music.
Leif Knowles is a quiet achiever. Since 2004, the Welsh artist has steadily released music through a small pool of labels, earning him the respect of DJs but mostly flying under the radar. His best tracks—from the minimally-inclined music of his early years, through to his more recent deep house output—have high production values, a pleasing sense of swing and tons of warmth. He’s a resident DJ at the much-loved Freerotation festival and has played outside of the UK a few times, but his touring schedule is steady rather than busy. All of which made it a pleasant surprise when he released one of the finest house albums of this year. Dinas Oleu saw Leif step back from the dance floor and refocus on melodies and atmosphere—it was described by RA’s Kristan Caryl as a “sumptuous symphony of sound.” We don’t think the record will make him a star, but it should hopefully create a wider audience for an artist who deserves one.”

Om Unit – Resident Advisor podcast #393

Hell yeah. I love the sounds from Om Unit!!
“Life at 160 BPM – Om Unit retools bass music.
Jim Coles is no newcomer, but it feels like only recently that he’s found his calling. After years of releasing hip-hop as 2Tall, the London producer gave himself a new identity, Om Unit, in 2010. He put out a series of records that jumped headfirst into the then-splintering dubstep scene, colouring between the lines with funk, electro and drum & bass. Then, as Philip D Kick, he dropped jungle singles that were re-edited in a footwork style, an influential series of bootlegs that laid out the rhythmic science that would become his trademark.”

Bok Bok – Resident Advisor podcast #391

“Nearly four years since they got into the game, Nights Slugs, the label Bok Bok runs with L-Vis 1990, is still a leading outlet for fresh club music mutations. This year has seen them both riding and transcending a trend with Club Constructions, a series of percussive workouts that puts a typically inventive spin on lo-fi house, techno and grime. The series was established last year with music from L-Vis 1990, Lil Silva and KW Gruff, and continued to expand in 2013 with Helix, Jam City and Hysterics stamping innovative twists on functionality. The Night Slugs purview also broadened to include future-facing R&B. Bok Bok was among a crew of producers who recorded beats for Kelela, a new solo artist who in September released CUT 4 ME, a free mixtape released on Fade To Mind, the Night Slugs sister label based out of New York. The talent pool runs seriously deep between the labels, but Bok Bok and co are still nurturing new names: the latest Night Slugs night in London last week featured two new additions to the roster, Neana and Deamonds.
There are echoes of Club Constructions on RA.391, with Bok Bok getting busy on the drums. He joins the dots between Xosar, Keith Worthy and Karizma, before locking the percussion into a thrill-seeking groove.”
