“Solid Steel in association with Serato (January 15th) This week DJ Irk takes to the decks, fresh from playing with our man Cheeba in the Alps. A mix that cuts up everything in sight has Foreign Beggars, Mr. Scruff, The Beach Boys, The Prodigy and the Average White Band all jostling for space.
Hour 2 starts with Producion Unit, one of Glasgow’s best kept secrets. Brimming with off kilter electronica, slow slung bass riddims and future hip hop of the highest quality with music from Flying Lotus, The Pharcyde , Harmonic 313 and J Dilla straight from your speakers.
DK wraps up the show with a mix of the new Blockhead album titled “The music Scene”. It’s his 3rd album and he has always made beautiful, emotive music based around the hip hop template, but on ‘The Music Scene’ he elevates his craft to another level.”

Brille Brille – French podcast with great music

Recently I was informed about a relatively new podcast called Brille Brille. The podcast is made by two French DJs, but now it seems like they are translating their show into English. Their goal is to get “regular” people to listen to new, good music and they have been successful so far with over 400 downloads per podcast. Here is what they got to say about their show: “We hope to give them keys to understand the different tendencies of what Benji B rightfully calls “underground soul music”.”
I had a listen to the 14th edition and it was very sweet with tunes from Joy Orbison, Major Lazer, Geenus and many more great artists.

“Solid Steel in association with Serato (January 8th) Strictly Kev aka DJ Food showcases his new EP – The Shape Of Things That Hum alongside a collection of tracks that influenced him whilst making it as well as a few favourites from 2009. EP ingredients like The The, King Cannibal and John Rydgren sit alongside a slew of Ninja and Big Dada artists (including The Slew) giving an insight into what was on the deck at the end of the decade.
In the second hour, friends of Solid Steel, Chris Read and Danny Delta present their ‘Game on’ mix from last year. There’s a smattering of hip hop leading into some jazzier beats, including some interesting edits of classic tunes from the likes of Donald Byrd, Franki Valli and Jean Knight amongst others.”

“Solid Steel in association with Serato (1st January) Hexstatic ring in the New Year with a cracking mix to take Solid Steel into 2010. Hudson Mohawk, Bassnectar, and a Busy P remix of Kraftwerk all feature, along with hot new music from the Hexstatic hard drive.

It’s the start of a new decade and hour 2 takes a timely look back at the last 10 years of hip hop beats from the leftside. 2tall, DJ Clockwork and Kper give us their ‘A Boom Bap Continuum’ mix, with over 200 tracks from 1999 to 2009, featuring tracks from Premo, Pete Rock and Madlib, through Dilla and on to Bullion, Floating Points, Harmonic 313 and everyone in between. “Solid Steel in association with Serato (25th December) We finish our review of 2009 looking back at the most popular mixes by the ‘nu skool’ Solid Steel residents, as voted by you the listeners.
‘In no particular order’, we kick off with DJ Cheeba and the audio part of his AV mix from September. Cutting up music (+visuals) from the Beastie Boys, Roots Manuva, Thunderheist and even Yo Gabba Gabba, it was your favourite mix from his contribution this year.
Boom Monk Ben got most votes for his November mix featuring bass heavy tracks from Starkey, Bassnectar, Rusko and the huge Joy Orbison, plus a cheeky bootleg of Dead Prez and retro edits of James Brown and Fats Waller.
You liked the Ruckus Roboticus mix from May which included his own excellent remix of Pase Rock, along with Chico Mann, Flying Lotus and Caetano Veloso.
It was DJ Moneyshot’s “Check Your Head” mix that stood out for you from his many fine contributions. Taking all the original beats from the classic Beastie Boys album he loops, re-edits and layers them into a mind-blowing odyssey, with Barrington Levy, Dr. John and The Fearless Four all featuring.”
