Legowelt + DJ Food – Solid Steel Show 2015-01-23

“Solid Steel (23rd January) Our guest in Hour 1 is Legowelt, a man of many guises, but it’s his most well known alias that delivers an exclusive mix for Solid Steel. He said this about his mix;
“A lot of unreleased stuff all over the place, mixed on the fly in a crude energetic manner on my old 80s Inkel mixer with built in analog delay recorded on a reel tape deck on slow speed. The music is a bit melancholic, a bit romantic, for grim overcast days of snow and rain with some sun rays coming in occasionally…. a prelude to the spring. Slowly mixing towards a happier vibe. No shallow dumb inbred shit for “Blokes” this is for mad dealers and freaks!”
DJ Food returns to the Magpie Music theme he started last year with a second mix collecting a host of his favourite tracks from 2014 in an extended mix. Heavy beats, fuzz bass, rockist guitars and analogue synths are the rich pickings that the Magpie furnishes its nest with as well as a healthy dose of underground Hip Hop. Food favourites Jane Weaver, Temples and Ghost of a Sabre Tooth Tiger get several selections as well as Gas Giant (friend of Solid Steel, Bristol’s Awkward under an alias). There’s even a psychedelic Four Seasons track in there…”

DK + DJ Food and Toddla T – Solid Steel Show 2013-11-29

“Solid Steel (29th November) Toddla T takes his turn to help celebrate our 25th birthday with a mix in his own unique style. The Steel City rudeboy drops a whole heap of brand new music with the Toddla T dub of Duppy by Timberlee kicking off the show, followed by Zouk Bass rhythms from KJ’s and Sandwich Island Bass out of Hawaii and Mark Pritchard with the excellent ‘Make a livin’. It’s more new tracks from Recloose and the first of two spins this week for Ashley Beedle with the Maddslinky remix of Saturday up first on Toddla’s own Girls Music label. Then it’s Donae’o, followed by M.I.A., Mr Mitch remixing Wiley and the sublime vocals of Sampha, all wrapped up with links and dub delays by a man like Toddla T.

In Hour 2 the countdown starts for the Solid Steel 25th Anniversary night at Fire in London with a mix from DK that features some of the artists playing including Mr Scruff, Robin Hexstatic, Four Tet and the new single from Illum Sphere. There’s more new music from Ninja Tune with forthcoming tracks from Falty DL, Beat Spacek and a Maya Jane Coles remix for Bonobo.
DJ Food steps up with a companion piece to last week’s 30 minute mix – Strictly Kev delves deeper and darker into ghostly electronic waters. An acoustic cover of Boards of Canada’s Reach For the Dead, V.I.V.E.K.’s stunning Mantra and Machinedrum’s Centre Your Love lighten the mood slghtly before we delve into witchcraft and sounds from abandoned buildings.”

Solid Steel Show 2012-03-09 Coldcut, DJ Format and DJ Food

“Coldcut open on a jazz tip, with Portico Quartet and move onto music from Archie Pelago, Focus Tree and Traffic. Dub sounds feature from Big Youth, Gunn Sound and the Gregory Issac Allstars, with a little addition from Missy Elliott and Amy Winehouse, before we end with the excellent West Norwood Cassette Library.
In hour 2, DJ Format, fresh from releasing his new album, ‘Statement of Intent’, drops science including a very rare Edan 7″, a DJ Soul Shock cut from ’88 and a ‘crazy Soviet record’ (his words) amongst new cuts from Beta Hector and Mr Chop.
Strictly Kev is on a rock trip this week which sees Steinski tear Hendrix a new one, Pepe Deluxé take the world by storm and finishes with a killer cut from Format’s new LP, making it all nice and neat.”

Solid Steel Show 2012-02-17 Coldcut, DJ Shepdog and DJ Food

“Solid Steel in association with Serato (17th February) It’s Coldcut with more of The Broadest Beats and the mixes featured in last night’s show presented live on Strongroom.fm and every Thursday between 7-9pm UK Time. It’s heavy breaks and beats from Motherlode and Bob James, before moving through reggae from Augustus Clarke, Busy Signal and a full workout on the classic Stalag rhythm with artists Prince Far I, Sister Nancy, Super Chick and Tenor Saw all taking their turn. Tracks from Public Enemy, Johnny Otis and Bama bring the first hour to a close.
DJ Shepdog provides the guest mix in hour 2 and continues on a similar vibe with a mix promoting the Nice Up Sessions, taking in Reggae, Dancehall, Hip hop and more, with music from LL Cool J, Stylo G, Schlachthofbronx and Toddla T. You can hear the full mix on his Mixcloud page.
Strictly Kev from DJ Food slides in for the last section of the show switching the theme to more electronic beats and ambient tones from the likes of Jon Brooks, Bonobo and Boards of Canada (given a Midland re-edit ), plus The The, Arnaud Rebotini and Demdike Stare.”

Solid Steel Show 2012-01-20 Pinch, DK and DJ Food Interview

“Pinch is our guest this week and it’s a mix celebrating the release of his FabricLive CD. He has been a key figure in the Bristol music scene and has gone on to create his own label Tectonic Records. Although well known for his dubstep, this mix takes us through the house and techno end of the spectrum and although there isn’t a tracklist available, you’ll spot the already classic ‘Music deep inside’ by Zed Bias and Ossie with ‘Tarantula’.
DK continues with the excellent ‘Spaceman Funk’ by Brawther which leads us into part of his ‘space themed’ set created especially for the DJ Food album launch party at the Greenwich Planetarium. A whole galaxy of space related tracks ranging from spaced out disco from Ednah Holt, the cosmic sounds of Mystic Moods, Talkling Heads with ‘Moon Rocks’ and of course, it wouldn’t be complete without Sun Ra and his Intergalactic Cosmo Arkestra.
In hour 2, our very own Strictly Kev from DJ Food is in the spotlight with an interview about his new album ‘The Search Engine’, which is released on the 23rd January. We get an insight into the making of his album, the collaborators involved and the artwork created by Henry Flint and Strictly Kev himself. We also get to hear tracks from the album along with music that has influenced him over the years, with tracks from Adam and the Ants, Kraftwerk, Grace Jones and Boards of Canada.”

Solid Steel Show 2011-12-30 DJ Food, Coldcut, DK and Hexstatic

“We continue our review of 2011 looking back at the most popular mixes by the Solid Steel resident DJ’s, as voted by you the listeners. Again ‘In no particular order’, we start with DK’s first ‘Cymatic Frequencies’ mix from January (that also came with an AV mix). Kidkanevil, Ramadanman and Maddslinky remixed Toddla T all feature, alongside a Ninja Trio and a Big Dada double, plus James Blake, Caribou and Bassnectar.
The Hexstatic mix that also appeared in January, was your favourite with the classic Royksopp remix of KOC, leading into the lovely electronica Two Dots by Lusine. SBTRKT’s remix of Modeselektors ‘Art&Cash’ leads perfectly into maierial from Robin Hexstatic’s project, plus music from Magnetic Man, Andreya Triana and Dave Angel.
In hour 2 Coldcut’s mix from July got your vote with a live DJ set from Matt Black at the Energy Union party in Brussels. It starts with classic selections from Kwanzaa Posse, Armando Trovajol, Mr Scruff and a KC Flightt hip house track from ’87. Then it’s the Redshape remix of Martyn’s ‘Seventy Four’ and we keep the pace with DJ Naughty and the epic Seiji mix of ‘Timber’.
DJ Food aka Strictly Kev’s mix from October was a favaourite, celebrating the release of his third EP – ‘Magpies, Maps & Moons’ and he compiled a ‘Magpie Reader’ full of tracks from it, his collaborators and influences. Featuring exclusive unreleased tracks and remixes as well as his trademark spoken word treasures it’s a sonic guide to where his head is at and paves the way for his album in January.”

Solid Steel Show 2011-09-16 Mr Tea and DJ Food

“This week it’s a debut for Mr Tea who drops his ‘Harsh side of the moon’ mix from his current home in New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean. The globetrotting DJ kicks off with abstract beats from Outersect, Prefuse 73 and Modeselektor and continues with tracks from Wagon Christ, Fiord and High Tone. It’s more highlights from the last few years with Antipop Consortium, Tipper and Julio Bashmore from 2009. The high tempo continues with the excellent ‘Clap Trap’ from Joe plus more from Tipper and APC to close.
DJ Food steps up in hour 2 with a mix of unreleased music from the ’64 bar challenge’ where the brief was for each track to be 110 beats per minute and last 64 bars. The series was originated on the Ninja Tune forum by Kovas and driven over 6 different challenges with entries from all over the world. Music comes from many unsigned artists, but we also have tracks from Solid Steel resident DJ Moneyshot and previous guests on the show.”

Solid Steel Show 2009-12-04 DJ Food, DK and Ruckus Roboticus

“DJ Food & DK showcase their AV mix that they perform live on 4 decks and 3 mixers. As usual, it’s the diverse mix of music that they love and are known for, taking in current faves from Foreign Beggars & Noisia, Joy Orbison and Dorian Concept, but also plenty of classics that have kept dancefloors rocking from TTC, Pendulum, Luke Vibert, Think Tank and Z-Trip. Plus, there’s sections from their two highly successful mix CD’s that have Rakim rapping alongside the Human League and the Beat battling the drum and bass of Mask, and all in glorious video as well.

In the second half, Ruckus Roboticus delivers an early Xmas present for Daft Punk fans. Tracks from the Parisian duo are laced with music from Kanye West, Diplo and others who give a generous nod to the robotic pair.”
