Solid Steel Show 2011-05-20 DK and Z-Trip

“This week it’s a mix from DK and it’s straight in with a tasty batch of leftfield beats that certainly hit the right groove, kicking off with another great 12″ on Botanika from Bunny on Acid, followed by Addison Groove, Seiji on the remix for Skream and a track off the Stagga album. Hexstatic continue the vibe with So Good, two tracks on Hessle Audio follow from Pearson Sound and Pangea, then it’s the Martelo remix of Bang On! and two soulful sounds from Stubborn Heart and Omar alongside Zed Bias. Then it’s latin heat off the BBE comp taking us through Mos Def, a Heatwave refix of a remix for Adele, new DELS, classic Nas and ending with greek legend Vangelis, timed for DK’s gig tonight at SIX DOGS in Athens. The mighty Z-Trip steps in hour 2 for his superb ‘All Access – A Beastie Boys Megamix’ to coincide with their new album. We don’t have a track list but you’ll recognise plenty of tracks from their catalogue mixed and spliced the way only Z-Trip can. Starting with ‘Paul Revere’ from Licensed to Ill and all the way up to their latest album Hot Sauce Committee, including a recording of the WBLS show where a young Z-Trip first heard the Beasties. DK returns for the last section with another track from Elzhi and his Elmatic mixtape, followed by original hip hop from the Widstyle movie. We switch to Analog Africa reissues of Orchestre Poly-Rythmo and Rob, new music from Owiny Sigoma Band and a rare Fela cover from ’75 by Johnny & Orquesta Rodrigues. It’s a track off the Africa Hitech album, turkish psyche funk from Mustafa Özkent and we close with jazz from the Harry Roche Constellation”

Resident Advisor Exchange RA.EX035 with Haul Music

Three of Melbourne’s finest explain the scene. In the second half of our Australian RA Exchange special this week, we chat to Mike Callander, Craig McWhinney and Christian Vance of Haul Music. Based in Melbourne, the imprint has become one of the city’s most highly visible outfits since its founding in 2008—much like its three protagonists. Prior to founding Hual, Callander, McWhinney and Vance were all respected artists in their own right, having spent most of the ’00s as regulars on the local club circuit. Uniquely positioned to tell the story of Melbourne’s past and present, RA’s Sanjay Fernandes recently sat down with the trio to find out what makes the city special.”

Resident Advisor Exchange RA.EX034 with Simon Caldwell

A Sydney vet talks about his home. In the first half of our Australian RA Exchange special this week, we chat to Simon Caldwell. With a career spanning almost two decades—all of it spent in Sydney—Caldwell stands as one of the most informed people to speak with about the city’s clubbing history. He’s been one of the cornerstone figures of the city’s electronic community, having held down long-term residencies at Home and Chinese Laundry, two of the city’s most influential clubs. More recently, he’s co-promoted Mad Racket, a party held at The Marrickville Recreation and Bowling Club, one of Sydney’s most unlikely party spots. RA’s Matt Unicomb talked to Caldwell about all of the above and more earlier this year.”
