David Rodigan on BBC Radio 2 2011-07-28 part 3

“David Rodigan showcases his love for all types of reggae music in a new ten-part series for Radio 2. With an hour of classic roots and reggae music from the 60s to the present day, Rodigan celebrates reggae’s back catalogue and looks to its future. Playing the best in reggae, roots, ska and rocksteady, each song will be linked by Rodigan’s encyclopaedic knowledge and warm reflective stories from reggae music’s history. There will also be guests and live sessions from classic artists. This week, Silly Games by Janet Kay is a British lovers rock anthem, and you can hear it again with Rodigan, alongside 60s Jamaican beach music from John Holt and The Paragons, and roots-rock-reggae anthems by Burning Spear and Dennis Brown. Big bass lines, rocksteady rim shots, glorious harmonies and sweet rhythms on BBC Radio 2.”

Solid Steel Show 2011-07-29 DK, DJ Jackatak and DJ HameOne

“DK kicks off the first hour with new music from Skream, two juke inspired tracks from the excellent Machinedrum album, the VIP mix of “Out in the streets” and early 90’s jungle selection, with Machinedrum once again on the edit and a Congo Natty classic. Then it’s into two prime reggae cuts from Tenor Saw and Michigan & Smiley, plus more from the Samiyam album on Brainfeeder and we continue with jazz from Jeremy Steig, a Soul II Soul cover from Zed Bias, their protege Wookie and another track from Raffertie off his new EP on Ninja Tune. In hour two it’s Jackatak and HameOne who are back after their popular mix alongside Antidote blew everyone away last month. This is their ‘Nature of the beat’ mix and we get more 90’s hip-hop, specifically the ‘Boombap’ era with Tribe, Pete Rock and Gangstarr leading the way along with more classic hip hop from Busta, EPMD, Masta Ace and KRS One. The Prodigy, Tipper and Ty also feature, with funk from Ruben Bell, Rufas Thomas and Chuck Carbo thrown in for good measure.”

Resident Advisor podcast #270 by Tokimonsta

“Jennifer Lee, AKA Tokimonsta, is part of the Flying Lotus-helmed Brainfeeder crew out of Los Angeles. Bearing in mind their deep impact upon the wider electronic music scene, it’s easy to forget that this coterie of artists, which also includes the likes of Gaslamp Killer, Samiyam, Ras G and Daedelus, have only been operating in a formalized group structure for the last couple of years. In fact Lee only put out her debut 12-inch at the beginning of 2010. Since that release, through UK imprint Ramp Recordings, her melodically intricate and rhythmically challenging take on instrumental hip-hop has surfaced on labels like All City Records and of course Brainfeeder, while her debut album, Midnight Menu, was put out in July of last year by Japanese imprint Listen Up. By the time RA profiled her for our Breaking Through series a couple of months later Christine Kakaire found Lee humbled and somewhat wide-eyed by the extensive touring and exposure the release had afforded her. ”
