“The vocalist of the Swedish theatrical rock band selects an hour of anthemic tracks that were all recorded at Soho’s legendary and sadly now defunct Trident Studios. Freak Zone Playlist 2022-04-21 by Sounds From The Other City

“The team behind the Salford-based arts festival celebrate independent grassroots music culture and the ‘other’ with an hour of eclectic music from the city’s best emerging artists. A sneak peak at their favourite acts on this year’s lineup including punk trio Mandy, Indiana and drum and bass vocalist Grove, plus a look back at their most treasured almuni such as poet saxophonist Alabaster DePlume and experimental rock outfit Black Country, New Road. This May marks the return of Sounds From The Other City after the festival’s four year hiatus.
Established in 2004 and proudly based within Salford, the often overlooked ‘other city’ to Manchester, Sounds sees music, performance and visual art embedded within pubs, churches, warehouses and artist studios as well as spilling into the city streets themselves. Referred to affectionately by the local creative community as “Salford Christmas”, a deep sense of experimentation, opennness and inclusivity runs through the event.”

Freak Zone Playlist 2022-04-14 by Elena Isolini & Bianca Scout

“The multi-discipined artists and longtime friends explore the connection between music and storytelling by playing songs that transport the listener to “a scene, a place, a thought”. An eclectic and atmospheric blend of avante-garde choral vocals, heady dance, outsider pop and rap from the likes of Meredith Monk, Tirzah & Mica Levi, J.B. Glazer and BRAK.
The London-based pair have just released their first collaborative album, ‘Our Hearts’ through the Preston-based Them There Records. The album was recorded and produced in London over intermittent gatherings throughout the past four years and was informed in-part by Isolini & Scout’s contemporary dance collective ‘Daughter Mary’. A blend of of collage pop and gnarly experimental ambient, the kind that fans of Bianca Scout may already be familiar with from her previous collaborations with the likes of Klein, Space Afrika and the Curl collective.”

Freak Zone Playlist 2022-04-07 Remembering Mira Calix

“An hour of experimental genre-bending music in light of the innovative multidisciplinary artist’s recent passing. The first woman to be signed by Warp in the 1990s, Mira Calix defied boundaries throughout her career which spanned multiple albums, large scale public art works, sculptures and soundtracks. An uncategorizable but highly distinctive sound that straddles sound collage, classical, ambient and electronic music, Calix’s work is rhythmic, playful and utterly compelling. This hour long playlist includes her soundtrack work for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 2017 production of Julius Caesar as well as her 2002 commission from the Natural History Museum of Geneva which saw her sample a tank of insects live on stage.”
