Freak Zone Playlist

Freak Zone Playlist 2023-03-16 by Dale Cornish

“The London-based musician plays an hour of eclectic tracks which share ‘unusual acoustics’. Songs recorded al fresco, amplified breathing and acoustic versus electronic instruments from Yoko Ono, Space Afrika, AMM, Dionne Warwick, David Sylvian and more.
Since playing a pioneering role in London’s electroclash movement, lifelong South Londoner Dale Cornish has been at the forefront of exploring the connections between club music and the avant-garde and reassembling them in his own unique fashion. His latest album, ‘Traditional Music of South London’ was released in October 2022 through the Death of Rave label and explores urban gay and south London folklore.”

“Label founder Luke Owen selects gems from the imprint’s fascinating archive. World-spanning music dating back to the 1920s such as Cambodian R&B, US gospel, Finnish polka and more.
Death Is Not The End is a London-based record label and radio show that explores the outer reaches of early 20th century field recordings, blues and gospel, global folk music and audio ephemera from pirate radio recordings to soundsystem tapes. Founder Luke Owen has been drawn towards unearthing and reissuing these unpolished raw recordings as they were “often one take cuts, straight to the lacquer; capturing a singular moment in time, never to be repeated”.”

Freak Zone Playlist 2022-12-29 by Lea Bertucci

“The sound artist and composer curates an hour of the most radical vocal music she can, including 70s Cambodian pop, field recordings from the Deep South and Tuvan throat singing, plus more.
Lea Bertucci’s Freak Zone Playlist follows the release of her new album, Xtended Vox which is out now on SA Recordings alongside an accompanying Spitfire Audio voice sample library. Xtended Vox features four acclaimed creative vocalists and pioneers of the avant garde, including Audrey Chen, Phil Minton, Cansu Tanrikulu and Ben Vida. Taking a timbral approach to the sounds, the library and compilation encompasses the most radical of vocal techniques, from throat singing to alien nasal sounds to the most fragile of whispers. Xtended Vox pushes the boundaries of what can be done with contemporary voice, melding free improvisation with formalised composition. Bertucci describes the compilation as “deeply human music” and celebrates the voice and the idea of how it is the first and only innate instrument, experimenting with the most ancient instrument in a contemporary context.”

Freak Zone Playlist 2022-12-08 by Shovel Dance Collective

“The London-based group explore the theme of water in experimental folk music old and new with transportive and stirring sounds from Shirley & Dolly Collins, The Incredible String Band, Cormac Begley and more. Shovel Dance Collective’s Freak Zone Playlist marks the release of their fascinating and distinctive new album, ‘The Water is the Shovel of the Shore’ which is out now on Memorials of Distinction and Double Dare labels. The release orbits around the concept of water and brings together on-site documentation of traditional songs, folk tunes and field recordings in long-form sound-collages. The results lie somewhere between folk music, music concrete and acoustic ecology.
Shovel Dance Collective is a nine-piece multi-instrumental and vocal group who explore the ways in which traditional music holds queer histories, proto-feminist narratives and the voices of working people. They are simultaneously traditional and experimental, seeing folk music as a living communal activity.”

“The DIY electro-pop artist curates an hour of songs that explore a sense of place featuring mellow melancholic music from The Trypes, Tara Clerkin Trio, Yuta Matsumura and more. The Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist chooses place as a theme in response to her nomadic lifestyle over the past decade and reflects on how environment can influence the music she makes.

“The composer plays music that inspired her soundtrack for The Passion of Joan of Arc, the visionary silent film from 1928, commissioned for the Chorus of Opera North as part of Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. The Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter and composer will be joined by the 36-strong ensemble at Huddersfield Town Hall on 23rd November 2022.
Over the course of five studio albums Julia Holter has pushed her experiments with vocals, songwriting and musical structures into astonishing and beautiful new territories. Scoring Carl Theodor Dreyer’s visionary 1928 telling of the martyrdom of the French saint, she finds an immense sonic tapestry at her fingertips, and an opportunity to dig deeper into her longstanding fascination with the art, history and music of the medieval era.”
