Luke Vibert – Fireside Chat on RBMA Radio

“It’s fair to say that musicians detest pigeonholing. Luke Vibert, also known as Wagon Christ, Plug, Amen Andrews, Kerrier District – and more – gets around this burden by having a musical personality verging on schizophrenia. His multiple personalities provide a rich output of work ranging from experimental drum ‘n’ bass on one album, via instrumental hip hop on the next, to acid house comfortably sitting somewhere in the middle. Hailing from Cornwall, UK, he grew up on hip hop and Herbie Hancock, down the round from Aphex Twin, whose early bedroom tapes passed around the area inspired Luke to depart from his youthful punk bands into solo electronic composition. An avid record collector with a post-modern approach to music, Luke samples rare grooves and interesting library music from his collection to create a unique sound. His work is displayed across many seminal record labels, from leading 90s label Rising High to Mo’Wax, from Nina Tune to Warp. Along with Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, or Mark Pritchard, Luke Vibert approaches music inventively. You’re never certain of where he will lead you next. His ethos is perhaps best summed up by the title of his own release, ‘Journey Into The Unknown’ (Mo’Wax). Or if that doesn’t sound right just take ‘I Love Acid’ (Warp).”

David Rodigan vs Toddla T On The Floor! – Live at Red Bull Studios, London

“At 15 David Rodigan started DJing at school dances and youth clubs, and more than 40 years later he doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Whether it’s collecting soundboy scalps on the clash circuit, juggling dubplates other selectors would sell their grandmas for, or edutaining entire generations of dancehall revellers worldwide with his legendary sets and speeches, the “Gentleman Rudeboy” is a true reggae rocker for life. Even when he started studying economics and drama, and went on to pursue a serious acting career in the 70s, Roddy always kept his passion for music alive as a record salesman and, of course, DJ. And when he finally obtained a resident slot on Capitol Radio in 1979, the fiyah was fully ignited: since then Rodigan has become a true legend in the reggae world, a respected father figure to many an aspiring soundboy, and a dreaded dominator in countless dubplate battles. He still hosts a Monday night slot on Kiss FM, while constantly touring the globe without even a suggestion of fatigue. This back-to-back set sees him cut the plates alongside Sheffield Steel City boy Toddla T. Weaned on the teat of bashment from a young age Toddla T rolled through his early years with ears glued to the speakers of his folks’ hi-fi. Making beats, bass, blunts, and girls filled his adolescence until he was crowned as inhouse studio boff at Sheffield’s Kenwood Studios at the grand old age of 19. Working on material for DJ Cash Money, Roots Manuva and Steve Edwards, amongst others, let him polish his craft until the studio shut, and he dived headfirst into distilling his own bass heavy wonk until it was ripe for dissemination. One half of digi duo Small Arms Fiya (along with fellow beat doctor/loafer Monkz), Toddla is contantly bringing the ruckus to the deadly dancehall table with a series of killer plates demolishing dimly lit basement boogies.”

Resident Advisor podcast #253 by Adam Marshall

“Adam Marshall’s New Kanada label has quietly become one of house and techno’s consistently great labels. The Mole, Seuil and Tolga Fidan have all released some of their finest recent works for the imprint, although the lion’s share of the discography has been populated by Marshall’s gritty, yet always emotive, take on house music. New Kanda’s success should come as no surprise, however: the DJ/producer has been putting out music and DJing since the late-’90s, and is now part of a core of Canadian producers—Deadbeat, Mike Shannon, The Mole, Mathew Jonson—residing in electronic music hotbed Berlin. New Kanada’s somewhat understated rise is in many ways mirrored by Marshall as a DJ—he’s never quite enjoyed the levels of fame of some of his compatriots yet can always be relied upon to bring something a bit special when he gets behind the decks. House, techno and a bit of bass music all adorn Marshall’s mix for us; melody is a recurrent theme, albeit with a generous side-serving of dirt. ”

6 Mix 2011-04-03 My Name is Tiga

“Canada’s ambassador for all things electro – Tiga – takes over the 6 Mix for 120 minutes of synth-based sonic wizardry. Based in Montreal, Tiga’s introduction to dance music came with the early 90s rave scene which inspired him to become a club DJ and set up his own label, Turbo Recordings. In the last decade he has become one of the most prolific producers in the world, remixing tracks by Soulwax, Fever Ray and the xx as well as releasing inspired covers of Nelly and Corey Hart. He’s also made his own solo album – Ciao – and collaborates with Zombie Nation under the alias ZTT. In his first 6 Mix, Tiga steps up to the 6 Music decks to play a range of electronic music from the past three decades, combined with a selection of cutting edge cuts from his DJ travels.”
