There are also 7 previously unheard treats which are not even lined up for release yet, including a special refix of a Groove Armada chill-out classic. “Radio 1 kicks off the Essential Mix Future Stars series with Pete Tong’s choice – Kölsch.
Rune Reilly Kölsch is the half Danish, half Irish DJ and Producer who, as Rune RK, was behind the perennial Ibiza smash ‘Calabria’ (the single sold 4 million copies worldwide). But, being a long time lover of techno, he decided to set up an underground label called Tattoorecs in 2006, where he released music under the guise of ‘Ink & Needle’. More recently he’s been working under the ‘Kölsch’ moniker, putting out his debut album ‘1977’ on the influential Cologne based Kompakt Records in 2013.”

“This Essential Mix was recorded live at my monthly ‘Keep It Unreal’ residency in Manchester, plying mostly vinyl with a couple of CDs thrown in there too. The venue at the time was the Music Box, a sweaty, dark basement, which is now a Tesco. Listening back, I can feel the atmosphere, the heat, and a room full of lovely people enjoying the music. Now that same room is full of stock assistants & chilled celery. Oh well! We have since moved the night to Band on the Wall, and will be celebrating the 15th year of Keep it Unreal in June 2014″. There have been so many great Essential Mixes over the years. David Holmes, Oakey’s Goa mix and Sasha’s Maida Vale mix all come to mind. But the mix I’ve chosen had a profound effect on my DJing. I remember playing it constantly one summer driving around Ibiza in my car.And listening to it again today makes you realize how prophetic it was, and how much their sound influenced not only me but the likes of Richie Hawtin, Luciano and Marco Carola as well”.
