Resident Advisor Exchange RA.EX039 with Sutekh

The experimental electronic producer gets live. The work of electronic sound sculptor Sutekh resides in that paradoxical grey area between dancability and experimentalism in their attempts to explore the “uncomfortable” regions of dance music. A combined interest in traditional music theory, studies in Electronic Music and Recording Media and a degree in Cognitive Science have naturally imbued Seth Horvitz’s discography with a learned sensibility and strong composition. His projects channel these areas into performances that unite classical music with digital technology. We caught up with Horvitz as part of our Live Exchange series at this year’s Mutek festival.”

BBC Radio 1′s Stories 2011-06-06 The Amen Break

“In 1969 the drummer of a band called The Winstons performed a 6 second drum solo in a track called Amen Brother. He could have had no idea how that break would go on to become one of the most used samples of all time.
It was used in early hip hop records during the 80s, it cropped up in loads of old skool rave tunes and became one of the foundation stones of Jungle and Drum & Bass – not to mention all the other tracks which feature it in one form or another! There are loads websites, databases and facebook groups devoted to the subject, for some reason Djs and producers are TOTALLY obsessed by it.
Kutski explores the legacy of the Amen Break and tries to track down one of the original members of The Winstons to find out how he feels about creating the most influencial 6 second break in music.”

Resident Advisor Exchange RA.EX038 with Akufen

Microhouse’s man of many monikers. Regarded as an electronic innovator following his pioneering 2002 debut album, My Way, Marc Leclair, AKA Akufen, gradually retreated from the limelight. After a lengthy release gap he returned in 2010 with Aurore; a fairly dark, unsettling EP under his Horror Inc. alias, a sound far removed from his largely jovial, tongue-in-cheek work as Akufen. Under his Horror Inc. alias—the “yang” to his inaugural Akufen pseudonym and outlet for the artist’s more personal productions—Leclair resurfaces in 2011 with a new live show and a forthcoming album on Perlon. As part of our Live Exchange series at Mutek, RA’s Todd L. Burns talked to Marc LeClair in front of a live studio audience in Montreal last week.”
