6 Mix 2011-06-19 Joe Goddard from Hot Chip and Raf Rundell: The 2 Bears

“Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard & Raf Rundell take over the 6 Mix to showcase their project, The 2 Bears. Joe, an alma mater of London’s Eliott School, which also produced members of The xx, the Maccabees and Burial, is no stranger to 6 Music listeners, being a founder member of hugely successful electro-pop group Hot Chip as well as an acclaimed solo producer in his own right. Made up of Goddard and DJ Raf Rundell, the 2 Bears emerged in 2010 as an outlet for Goddard to experiment with a harder, dirtier sound, in contrast to Hot Chip’s lighter, poppier sonic. Formed over back-to-back club sets in sweaty DJ booths, the duo have put out two sought after EPs – ‘Follow The Bears’ and ‘Curious Nature’ and release the third – ‘Bear Hug’ – this month. In this 6 Mix, Goddard and Rundell talk about their journey in dance music and play the music that has inspired the project, from Detroit techno and Chicago house via hip hop, basement and UK garage. The duo also talk about their upcoming appearance at this year’s Glastonbury Festival and their other live plans for what they’ve dubbed ‘the year of the bear.’.”

6 Mix 2010-12-26 Dave Pearce meets Chuck D of Public Enemy

“On November 3 1987, BBC 6 Music and then Radio London DJ Dave Pearce introduced hip-hop group Public Enemy live on stage at London’s Hammersmith Odeon. The next year, the band sampled Dave’s intro for the opening track of their 1988 album ‘It Takes A Nation Of Millions to Hold Us Back’; the record which propelled the band to stardom worldwide. Since then, ‘Nation of Millions’ has been proclaimed as the greatest hip hop album of all time, feted by everyone from Rolling Stone magazine to Jay Z. Two decades on, Dave and Public Enemy front man Chuck D meet to reminisce about the birth of rap music in the US and UK and how things have changed in 2010. The pair discuss how they met, how Dave ended up becoming the first person to play them on UK radio, and the role the band played in bring rap music to the mainstream on both sides of the Atlantic. They also discuss the firebrand politics which came to characterize their lyrics and the role they played in taking rap from an underground sound which wasn’t played on daytime radio to becoming the pre-eminent sound in mainstream music. Chuck D also picks a selection of music which soundtracked the era including LL Cool J, Stetsasonic and the World Famous Supreme Team and plays the music which informed his childhood including James Brown. There’s also a chance to hear live music from the infamous 1987 Hammersmith Odeon show, last heard on radio over two decades ago.”

6 Mix 2010-12-19 Arcade Fire and The National Takeover

“Two of the bands destined to top the critics’ lists of 2010’s best albums – The Arcade Fire and The National – take over the 6 Mix. Arcade Fire multi instrumentalist Richard Reed-Parry and brothers Aaron & Bryce Dessner who play guitar and bass in The National have been long-term friends since meeting on the American alt-rock circuit, regularly appearing on the same festival bills worldwide. Both acts released new albums in 2010 – Arcade Fire with ‘The Suburbs’ and The National with ‘High Violet’, the latter winning Q Magazine’s coveted ‘Album of 2010’ award last month. Their friendship was cemented when Richard from the Arcade Fire contributed to a number of songs on The National’s latest LP, most notably playing double bass and guitar on ‘Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks’, and doing the vocal harmony arrangement on ‘Conversation 16’. In this special 6 Mix, Richard, Aaron and Bryce team up to play a selection of music which has inspired and soundtracked their friendship along with some of their favourite new music from 2010.”

6 Mix 2010-12-12 The Art of the Remix

“Journalist Jo Youle explores the art of remixing records with the help of a stellar cast of producers and DJs . Since their emergence from the disco scene in the 1970s, remixes have dominated the world of dance music, often helping break records which wouldn’t otherwise have been hits. Over the last few years remixes of old tracks by Elton John and Simian have become chart toppers, whilst Skream’s remix of La Roux’s ‘In For The Kill’ is widely recognised as the tune which broke dubstep into the mainstream. In this programme, James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem, Armand Van Helden, 2ManyDJs, Fatboy Slim and more spill the beans about why they think remixes play such an important part in dance music, what the secret to a good remix is and how they go about remixing records for other artists. There’s also a chance to hear some of the DJs favourite remixes from the past two decades including Fatboy Slim’s take on Cornershop, Tiga’s take on LCD Soundsystem and Leftfield versus John Lydon.”

BBC 6 Mix 2010-09-26 – Coldcut celebrating 20 years of Ninja Tune

“DJ and production duo Coldcut host a special 6 Mix celebrating the 20th anniversary of their Ninja Tune record label. Founded by the duo – Jonathan Moore and Matt Black – in 1990, Ninja Tune has become one the most important homes for electronic and experimental dance music in the UK. As well as releasing records by Coldcut themselves, Ninja have gone on to start the careers of artists including Luke Vibert, The Herbaliser, DJ Food, Kid Koala and many, many more. The label also pioneered the art of using live visuals in dance music, and its distinctive Ninja logo has become synonymous with the cream of experimental music in Britain. To mark twenty years at its helm, Coldcut present their very own ‘history of Ninja’ 6 Mix, playing and talking about some of the key artists in the label’s history, and looking forward to where it will head in the next few years. The 6 Mix then pits a host of Ninja DJs past and present against each other in an exclusive soundclash, with mini mixes from Mr Scruff, Strictly Kev from DJ Food, Eskmo and Toddla T’s tribute to label stalwart, Roots Manuva.”
