Gilles Peterson Worldwide 2011-02-23 with Nicolas Jaar and Cubic Zirconia

“Gilles Peterson plays a top selection of musical treats to get half term going with a bang! We had words and music from Nicolas Jaar and played out two brilliant session tracks from Cubic Zirconia. Also, watch out for big upfront music from the likes of Fourtet, LV & Message To Bears, Tokimonsta, Floating Points remix of Daedelus and a couple of tracks from the new Radiohead album.”

DJ MikeQ podcast #186 for XLR8R

“DJ MikeQ may not be a name that rings familiar for many XLR8R readers, but we have a pretty strong intuition that’s about to change. His name has been popping up in mixes from the likes of Kingdom and Bok Bok for awhile now, but a little digging has shown DJ MikeQ to be one of the leading figures of the East Coast’s long-running (but still largely underground) ballroom/vogue-house scene. Based in New Jersey, the 25-year-old producer is not only one of the most in-demand ballroom DJs, but he also heads up his own Qween Beat label and turns out a steady stream of vogue and ballroom tracks, re-edits, and remixes. We’ll be taking a much larger look at ballroom in the next issue of the magazine, but in the meantime, we’ve enlisted DJ MikeQ to assemble this exclusive mix and introduce himself (and by extension, the ballroom scene) to the XLR8R faithful. It’s an exciting listen; prepare yourself for lots of fierce/fabulous divas, blown-out snares, gritty sounds, and a seemingly incalculable number of tunes built upon a tiny loop from Masters at Work’s classic “The Ha Dance.””

Hope the sounds quality is ok, feedback appreciated..
“Dubpressure: The long-standing club night run by Unlikely, Letty, Dom and Kion of Clandestine Cultivations. Starting in 2005, it grew to become Brighton’s premier dubstep event, and thanks to the resident Gramps soundsystem one of UK’s best for deep bass – drawing regular roadblock crowds to the numerous seafront venues it has held residence in over the years.”

FACT mix 224 by Justin Broadrick

“It’s his Pale Sketcher mask that Broadrick dons for this FACT mix, leaning strongly on hip-hop (Lootpack, Dr. Octagon, RZA) while travelling through various electronic forms that inform the project, including Boards of Canada, dBridge, Oval, Caustic Window and Chain Reaction. There’s even room for forthcoming Pale Sketcher material for Ghostly. It’s a legend at work; tuck in.”

Resident Advisor podcast #247 by Pinch

“I guess I took the opportunity to do something a little different here than people may expect of me—I usually have stuck to the dubstep tempo (around 140 BPM) in the past, however, I wanted to play a mix of tracks I’m mostly feeling at the moment so the first half is at the slower tempo of around 128 BPM and the latter half at around 140 BPM. I wanted to give the mix a bit of a journey vibe rather than a straight up dancefloor selection. I decided to layer some additional samples to give the mix a bit more a unique ‘Pinch’ flavour (i.e. dark with lots of strange reverb!). Some of the mixing isn’t exactly perfect but I like the idea that these imperfections give it a bit of ‘life’—something I personally find a little lacking when DJs seamlessly mix with CDs/Ableton or whatever. [But it’s] just a personal preference really. ”

6 Mix 2011-02-20 Jamie XX from The XX takes over the 6 Mix

“One third of the Mercury Awards winners The XX and 2011’s most in-demand remix artist, Jamie XX, takes over the 6 Mix. Formed in London in 2005, the XX released their debut album in 2009, with its sparse, minimal production by Jamie pricking up the ears of scenesters and musicians alike. In 2010 his reworking of Florence And The Machine’s cover of ‘You Got The Love’ set the online world alight, and already this year his remix of Adele’s ‘Rolling In The Deep’ has become one of the most blogged tunes worldwide. As he prepares to release ‘We’re New Here’ – his dubstep and old skool house flavoured reworking of Gill Scott Heron’s 2010 album ‘I’m New Here’, Jamie takes over the 6 Mix to play a selection of the music which inspired his productions alongside some of his current favourites. Jamie also tells the story of how he came to remix the whole Gil Scott Heron album and the dance music influences which informed its radical reworking.”
