Scott Zacharias – Resident Advisor podcast #606 2018-01-08

“A Detroit underdog steps up.
Scott Zacharias is a well-kept secret in a city full of them (Detroit), but that may be starting to change. Many know him from No Way Back, the Motor City party series where, sometime around dawn in the chill-out room, following hours of mind-bending techno next door, he unspools psychedelic tapestries of disco, jazz, Italo and whatever else seems to suit the moment. He applies the same freewheeling style to The Fantasy, his edits duo with Interdimensional Transmissions founder BMG, whose choice of source material stretches from Chris & Cosey to The Fatback Band. Central to his appeal is his unpredictability: on any given night, he’s as capable of odd eclecticism as he is of dirty club jams. Usually you’ll get a mix of both.
This anything-goes approach reflects a cornerstone of his city’s musical tradition: freeform radio, the genre-hopping format embodied by figures like The Electrifying Mojo. It’s earned Zacharias an ever-growing cast of die-hard fans, from regular punters to the likes of L.I.E.S. boss Ron Morelli. RA.606, an off-the-cuff romp through the clubbier side of his sound, shows what the fuss is about.”

Oscar Mulero – Resident Advisor podcast #596 2017-09-30

“Deeper shades of techno.
There was a nice bit in the interview we did with Oscar Mulero a few years ago, where he was talking about setting up THE OMEN club with his friends in Madrid in the mid-’90s. “We actually had no clue there was an Omen club in Frankfurt at that time,” he said, referring to Sven Vath’s legendary venue. It’s easy to forget that not so long ago the international techno scene wasn’t really a scene at all, with isolated pockets of activity scattered around the globe. The big DJs from the UK, the US and Germany were beginning to travel regularly for the first time, but it was thanks to regional DJs like Mulero that they had clubs and scenes to go play in. These days Mulero is recognised as an artist who made Spain part of the European techno conversation.
You can trace Mulero’s evolution through one of his labels, Warm Up Recordings, which got started back in 2000 and is about to release its 50th record. Mulero’s tough, loop-driven sound of the 2000s gradually gives way to more heady and nuanced music. You’ll also find examples of this scattered across the discography of his other label, PoleGroup Recordings, as well as other leading techno outlets like Token, Mord and Semantica, the label that will release his next album in early 2018. We get a taste of other new material on Mulero’s RA podcast, which pulls in some unreleased music as well as other new cuts from across the techno scene.
The result is 60 minutes of mesmerising music—a style that’s helped Mulero become one of techno’s best and busiest DJs.”

Jamie Tiller – Resident Advisor podcast #588 2017-09-04

“All Tiller, no filler.
Tiller’s digging skills naturally fuel his DJing. As well as having deep crates and an ear for feel-good music from across the world, he’s technically accomplished behind the decks, which explains why he’s increasingly in demand. (This year has been a blur of sets across Europe and North America.) His RA podcast includes some tantalising exclusives from Music From Memory and its sub-label, Second Circle, along with some of the tunes Tiller’s been playing out this past year.”

“60 minutes of fresh techno.
Bicknell’s RA podcast sums up his recent hot streak. The mix is comprised almost entirely of unreleased music from 6dimensions. Like all of his work down the years, it’s characterised by an unwavering focus and a striking clarity of vision.”

Hodge – Resident Advisor podcast #581 2017-07-17

“Bristolian techno.
Martin’s RA podcast showcases his city’s scene, featuring his own work along with current or former Bristol artists like Kowton, Pev, Shanti Celeste and Batu. It features plenty of techno, but these tracks are rarely straightforward—we get the breakbeats of Tessela, Martin’s pummelling remix of Perc, and the breaks assault of “All My Love,” his collaboration with Peder Mannerfelt. There are also tracks from the Hessle Audio axis, which makes sense: over time Martin has proven himself capable of the kind of genre alchemy perfected by artists like Pearson Sound and Pangaea, a rare category of producer that Martin now fully belongs to.”

Saoirse – Resident Advisor podcast #577 2017-06-19

“A wild ride from a DJ on the rise.
On this week’s RA podcast, we’re feeling proudly nepotistic—Saoirse Ryan has worked here for seven years, heading up RA’s tickets department. Reassuringly enough, her involvement in the RA podcast is an easy case to make, something we could do through her gigs alone this year. So far in 2017: fabric, Concrete, AVA Festival, Gottwood and Love Saves The Day. Still to come: Into The Valley, Love International, Sankeys Ibiza, Houghton Festival and Freerotation. But this is about more than eye-catching bookings. We can say with a straight face that Saoirse is one of our very favourite DJs. It’s all the more satisfying that she’s achieved success by simply going out most weekends and playing incredibly well.”

Busy P – Resident Advisor Exchange podcast RA.EX358 2017-06-15

“Few people have been as active as Pedro Winter AKA Busy P in French dance music. Hustling from the Radio FG studios to the Rough Trade record bins to Laurent Garnier’s parties at Rex Club, the enthusiastic teenager quickly became a mascot for the nascent Parisian house scene in the early ’90s. His growing popularity and network led him to organise events at Folie’s Pigalle and then Le Palace at the request of the Guettas. Winter could have remained a busy promoter if a French duo didn’t decide otherwise.
As they were about to drop their first album, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo asked Winter to join the Daft Punk adventure. From there, the young manager learned the ins and outs of the music industry on an international scale. It was a success story he was soon to repeat with his own label, Ed Banger, this time with another duo called Justice. With Ed Banger celebrating its 100th release, we caught up with Winter in his Montmartre office as he returned from Coachella to reflect on a career spanning two decades.”

Mr Mendel – Resident Advisor podcast #576 2017-06-12

“Soulful sounds from the last 50 years.
Mendel Ezra is the sort of DJ who collapses time and compresses distance. If you’ve heard him play around Europe over the last few years, it maybe didn’t occur to you that some of the records you heard were made 30 years ago on the other side of the world. In fact, the records he played could have been made at any point in the last five decades in any corner of the globe. Mendel’s skill is bringing it all together into a single, soulful dance floor experience. He’s been spreading his message beyond Amsterdam more and more recently, his reputation flourishing thanks to his standout sets, his popular online mixes and his well-received edits. “In general I like simple edits that keep the soul and dynamics of the song intact,” he tells us, “but emphasise something different to the original.” It’s been working nicely. Mendel has given his light touch to music by Fela Kuti, Nina Simone, James Brown and, most memorably, the Brazilian bossa nova group Trio Ternura, with his unreleased version of “A Gira” sitting on a healthy 100,000-plus plays on SoundCloud.
As you’ll hear on these week’s RA podcast, Mendel also has a taste for house music, although it’s just one of the many styles he covers on the mix. There’s a relaxed sense of positivity in his selections, making it an ideal accompaniment for these warmer months.”

Flørist – Resident Advisor podcast #574 2017-05-29

“The sound of Vancouver.
With the sound of rain, humid chords and vintage breaks, few tracks represent Vancouver like Flørist’s “Marine Drive.” It propelled its producer, Logan Sturrock, to the upper echelons of the city’s thriving scene, even though he was an important fixture there for years before that. As a DJ and a punter, Sturrock was a steady presence at the start of Vancouver’s afterhours boom. As a designer, he created the signature look—playful text and muted colours inspired by old rave artwork—of Mood Hut’s flyers. The charming aesthetic soon spread across the city and has since been imitated by promoters from Melbourne to London.
Thanks to “Marine Drive,” a record on World Building and a cheeky edit of “Show Me Love” on Pacific Rhythm, Sturrock is a well-known producer, but he’s also a respected and versatile DJ. He can combine feel-good disco and classic house, or he can go full-bore techno, throwing down trippy records you’ve never heard. His RA podcast is somewhere in between. Comprising tunes new and old—including tracks from Pet Shop Boys, obscure ’90s deep house and cuts from Laurent Garnier, Sterac and Aaron Carl—it’s a rough-and-tumble ride with the spontaneity of a peak-time club set.”

DJ Koolt – Resident Advisor podcast #573 2017-05-22

“The underground sound of Montevideo.
Listen for yourself on RA.573, a recording from Koolt’s set at Phonotheque in March. It was his first appearance of the year at his favourite club (it only opens between March and December), and it saw him play to a packed peak-time dance floor. As always, Koolt was in great form, moving through pumping tech house and techno before ending with more abstract material.”

Sarah McBriar – Resident Advisor Exchange podcast RA.EX354 2017-05-18

“We check in with the brains behind Belfast’s hotly-tipped AVA Festival.
Most people start festivals with little more than a pipe dream and a love of music. Sarah McBriar was more prepared. Born in Belfast, she spent her twenties working behind the scenes at various events up and down the UK, including Manchester International Festival, The Warehouse Project and Glastonbury’s Block 9. In 2013, she moved to London to complete an MA in Creative Production at Royal Central School Of Speech & Drama. As part of her final project, she developed a business plan for AVA, a new festival dedicated to showcasing electronic acts and visual artists from Northern Ireland. It launched in 2015 and enjoyed rapid success, partly due to McBriar’s lifelong love of dance music and newfound industry acumen, and partly because young people in Belfast really know how to party. Later this month, AVA will celebrate its third edition, expanding from one to two days and hosting performances from the likes of Jeff Mills and Ben UFO, as well as a long list of locals. It’s quickly grown into one of Europe’s smartest young festivals, so we invited McBriar along to our London office to hear more of its story.”

Haruka – Resident Advisor podcast #572 2017-05-15

“Psychedelic techno from Tokyo’s rising star.
Haruka’s RA podcast was made with a narrative in mind. He carefully puts together tracks, full of lush synths and big melodies, that take their time to build, the moods shifting gradually and naturally. It’s more of an opening set than a peak-time workout, but it’d be one of those warmups that eclipses the headliner.”

Willow – Resident Advisor podcast #569 2017-04-24

“The breakthrough house producer shares her key influences and current favourites.
It all happened pretty quickly for Sophie Wilson, the Manchester-born, London-based DJ and producer better known as Willow. Many of us first heard of her with “Feel Me,” an addictive deep house bomb that was one of this site’s favourites of 2015. That was the first track she’d ever made, and it blew up completely by accident: Move D heard it wafting out of her tent at Gottwood Festival, poked his head in to find out what it was, and quickly became its champion, playing it on Boiler Room, putting it in his fabric mix and convincing Lowtec to release it on Workshop.
A year and some change later, Wilson returned with Workshop 23, a record whose boldness and breadth of style easily surpassed the lofty expectations set by her debut. Now, barely five years since she first started messing around with Logic, Wilson is one of house music’s most promising new artists, with a home on one of its most beloved labels. And yet, the exact dimensions of her sound world remain something of a mystery, thanks in part to the surprising variety within the five tracks she’s released so far. RA.569 sheds more light on her style, mixing the kind of sleek club thumpers she plays out with the classic hip-hop and trip-hop that echoes softly in her productions.”

Fatboy Slim – Resident Advisor Exchange podcast RA.EX349 2017-04-13

“English DJs don’t come much bigger than Norman Cook. Alongside contemporaries like The Chemical Brothers, Cook combined memories of the Beatles, punk, acid house and a devil-may-care attitude into the crossover phenomenon christened big beat. It was named after Cook’s own club night, where he says he used to play hip-hop at 45rpm and acid tracks on 33. But what was initially about breaking rules became a formula, and Cook consciously stepped back from the hype after a string of albums that spawned ubiquitous chart hits like “Right Here, Right Now” and “Praise You,” which are still embedded in brains to this day.
Though you might know the hits, on-stage antics and Hawaiian shirts, Cook cut his teeth in an age when DJs were considered just above the glass collector in the club’s hierarchy. But by the early 2000s, Cook was unknowingly laying the template for the DJ as a main stage festival draw, which later came to fruition in the American EDM phenomenon. Carlos Hawthorn travelled to Brighton to ask Cook what it’s like playing to 360,000 people, apologising to Burial and keeping up with the new generation of superstar DJs.”
