“Throughout the 2014 World Cup, Gilles Peterson’s Musica Brasileira will showcase the very best from what is arguably the world’s most vibrant musical culture.
Over the past three episodes, Gilles has been guiding listeners through the musical gems of Brazil; from the jazz-influenced sounds to the Samba schools of Rio via Brazilian soul and some of the contemporary sounds coming out of the country.
In this final episode, Gilles picks his fourth Santa Graal (or “Holy Grail”) record, where he shines a light on a stand out release from Brazil’s past. Previous choices have included Arthur Verocai’s self titled release from 1970, an experimental album from Pedro Santos and a 1969 record from Sao Paulo’s Elis Regina. This week, Gilles focuses on Bossa Nova singer, guitarist and composer Edu Lobo and his 1970 offering Cantiga de Longe.
During this landmark four-part series, Brazilian music expert Gilles will guide listeners from the birth of samba to the modern day mega-festivals, from the drums of Bahia to the rhythms of the ‘Nordestina’, the dances of Eastern Amazonia and to the punk rockers of Sao Paolo.
