Fresh from hosting the New Year’s Eve celebrations on BBC Radio 2, Dave notches it up a gear as he goes back to 1991 with a selection of old skool classics celebrating two decades since rave exploded into the mainstream. There’s music from Rozalla, The Prodigy, T 99, K-Klass, SL2 legend Slipmatt joins us on the phone and in the final 30 minutes, there’s a guest mix from Shades of Rhythm, whose anthemic ‘Rhythm Is A Mystery’ hit the charts in June 1991.”

“We finish our review of 2010 looking back at the most popular mixes by the ‘Old Skool’ Solid Steel residents, as voted by you the listeners. Again,’In no particular order’, we start with DK’s mix from March kicking off with the excellent Warrior One remix of ‘Eyesdown’ by Bonobo and continue in a leftfield uptempo groove with Martyn, Joy Orbison and Octa Push, before dropping the huge bomb that is the Nero remix of ‘Sincere’. More bass heavy beats follow, before dropping down with new music from the legendary Gil Scott-Heron, Jay Electronica and the original from Billy Stewart. Coldcut’s mix from October was part of the Ninja Tune 20th anniversary celebrations, where they plucked out a few gems from the back catalogue as well as looking forward with tracks from the Ninja Tune XX compilation. DJ Vadim, The Bug and Ghislain Porier all feature alongside remixes of Coldcut tracks from King Jammy and United States of Audio, plus they have their own take on The Heavy’s ‘How you like me now’. Hexstatic’s mix from May celebrating their ‘Trailer Trax’ album, got your vote and it also came with it’s own Video mix. Taking it’s lead from the cheese of drive-in cinema trailers, ‘Grindhouse’ style movies and those Saturday Morning Cinema shorts of all our youths,..we see and hear these elements sliced and diced with techno, dubstep, dancehall and drum and bass rhythms into a whipped up frenzy that’s ‘now available in the foyer!’….. ‘The Mighty Gammera’ destroy Tokyo in a flash, ‘Galaxy Invaders’ scare rednecks with ill fitting plastic suits. Mix in some other favorites from the likes of Mantronix, Dizzee Rascal and DJ Hazard and you have one Blockbuster of a mix! Also from May, Strictly Kev’s winner brewed up a mix with a distinct whiff of Brit nostalgia taking in vintage electronica, psychedelic folk, outer space beats and deep dubstep. Moon Wiring Club, Broadcast & The Focus Group and Lost Idol all featured, plus tracks from Blockhead, James Pants and Gil Scott Heron.”

We continue our review of 2010 looking back at the most popular mixes by the ‘nu skool’ Solid Steel resident DJ’s, as voted by you the listeners. ‘In no particular order’, we kick off with Boom Monk Ben and a section from his mix back in September, hitting big dubstep tracks with Benga’s remix of Toddla T, Chali 2Na & Rusko, plus ragga flavours from Tanya Stephens and the oh so soulful voice of Erykah Badu given a superb remix by Seiji.

“Cheeba’s mix from February got your votes, with music from Waxfactor, Memory9, and Santogold, alongside music from the Ninja catalogue, where DJ Food and King Cannibal jostle for space with Roots Manuva and Hexstatic. In Hour 2, Ruckus Roboticus gets the nod for his May mix of contemporary beats, hip-hop, and soul to while away your lazy afternoons. Of course J Dilla is in there, lounging alongside Mos Def, Flying lotus and Jay Electronica. DJ Moneyshot’s ‘You Are The Infinity’ mix from February hit the right button, with crisp drum kicks of vintage Jungle added to a hypnotic dose of self-help records, Rock breaks, classic Hip-Hop and downtempo beats. Ann Peacock, Photek, Organized Konfusion, Pixies and Daedelus all get some treatment.”
