6 Mix 2011-05-08 Back to The Phuture: Claudia Brucken and Mark Jones

“In the latest of his occasional series of 6 Mixes exploring synthesised music past and present, record label boss and electro enthusiast Mark Jones is joined by Propaganda frontwoman Claudia Brücken to discuss her life in music. Hailing from Dusseldorf in Germany, Propaganda were signed to Trevor Horn’s ZTT label in 1984 by Paul Morley, whom Claudia would later marry. The band hit the charts the next year with their debut album ‘A Secret Wish’, featuring seminal singles ‘Dr Mabuse’ and ‘Duel’, and although the band split two years later, Claudia has carried on making music, both as part of a duo with OMD’s Paul Humphries and on her own. In this programme, Claudia shares her ‘synth-fluences’ with Mark, including tunes from Kraftwerk, Patti Smith and La Dusseldorf alongside contemporary electronica from Crystal Castles and James Blake. She also discusses her new solo album ‘Combined’ featuring, amongst others, a duet with Erasure’s Andy Bell. There’s also music from Depeche Mode, Motor and a look ahead to next week’s Short Circuit Festival at London’s Roundhouse, celebrating the output of seminal electronic label Mute Records.”

V.I.V.E.K of Deep Medi – Train Wreck Mix – RBMA Radio

“Today’s electronic music scene revolves continuously on hype, and there are few artists and labels that can rely almost entirely on their musical content to do their talking. Mala’s Deep Medi camp and V.I.V.E.K are noted exceptions to this rule. Influenced by the golden years of drum & bass and fed on a steady diet of dub and roots music, V.I.V.E.K has been honing his musical construction skills since 2004. Progressing naturally from DJing to production, V.I.V.E.K shaped his unique subterranean groove through several feted releases for Deep Medi, solidifying his reputation as one of the most talented artists on the label. V.I.V.E.K has also become a regular DJ on the DMZ/Deep Medi nights, playing chest rattling, consciousness moving exclusives as a norm, reminding listeners of why they all fell in love with the dubstep sound in the first place.”

Data Transmission podcast #159 from Icicle

“Dutchman Jeroen Snik – AKA Icicle – is a shape-shifting entity in the world of drum and bass. In fact, he’s difficult to keep pinned down to one scene in particular – using the drum and bass drum pattern as a template, this innovative and prolific producer crosses into the realms of house, techno, dubstep and chill out with his influences – all with the slightest turn of hand – with every track sound crisp, fresh and starkly cold with his trademark fattened drums and detailed ambience flowing through.”

Resident Advisor Exchange RA.EX032 with Matthew Herbert

“The UK’s electronic raconteur talks food, pigs and Cafe De Flore. Matthew Herbert once said that he has few peers. He didn’t say it in an arrogant way, mind. He simply meant it’s hard to find electronic artists that record drum sets in hot air balloons. Or ones that attempt to record the entire life cycle of a pig. Or ones that sneak into the Houses of Parliament for the sake of their art. It’s fair to say, in fact, that there’s no one like Matthew Herbert at all. Whether it’s his jazz-tinged deep house with Dani Siciliano, his work with his big band or his more explicitly experimental work of late, Herbert’s career defies categorization. The only phrase to describe him is “relentlessly curious.” We tend to call ourselves the same at RA, so we caught up with the producer at his home near the seaside in Whitstable, about 45 minutes outside of London, to explore his work in-depth.”
