6 Mix 2011-06-05 Battles

“Post rock polymaths Battles take over the 6 Mix to play a selection of experimental music which has shaped their unique sound. Formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 2002, Battles released a series of acclaimed underground EPs before signing to Warp Records in 2006. Their debut album Mirrors was released in the following year and the band soon built up a reputation for playing fearsome and energetic live shows. In this special 6 Mix, bassist Dave Konopka and drummer John Stainer take over the show to play the music which has influenced and inspired Battles’ sound including tracks from Rush, The Pixies and Bow Wow Wow. They also discuss their love of Krautrock and experimental artists like Ricardo Villalobos and how electronic music artists such as Liquid Liquid and 808 State which have help shaped their unique sonic textures. The band tell the story behind their new album Gloss Drop and how they eneded up collaborating with electronic legend Gary Numan on its stand out track ‘My Machines.'”

Kutski 2010-06-04 with Bioweapon

“If you’ve been following me on facebook or twitter, you’ll know I’ve recently been out on tour in Australia, and Australia is really hot place for hard music at the moment, Especially Hardstyle!! Over the past 12 months there is one particular Hardstyle duo from Sydney that I’ve been heavily supporting, and a few weeks ago I saw them play at a massive rave out in Australia called Magic City, and I was so blown away by them, I had to get them to do me a guest mix to bring back and share with you all tonight!! I’m sure you’re gonna love them too, these are the sounds of Bioweapon on BBC Radio 1!!!!”

Solid Steel Show 2011-06-03 Jackatak, HameOne & Antidote and DK

“This week we have DJ’s Jackatak, Hame One & Antidote who combine their turntable skills and musical styles for a multi-genre mix with seamless transitions. We start with music from the bass end of the spectrum from Opiuo, JPOD and the classic dub version of Witness by Roots Manuva, moving onto 90’s hip hop from Lords of the Underground, Main Source and Showbiz & AG. The beats get heavy and the tempo increases with the Leisure All-stars, Krafty kuts & Mooqee before dropping into dubstep and through D n B, breaks and beats from DJ Zinc, Bassbin twins and Mr Ozio. In hour 2, DK takes his turn to pay tribute to the legendary Gil Scott-Heron with a mix that highlights just a few personal favourites from his extensive career spanning 40 years. His music was influential to many and has been played on Solid Steel ever since the show started. We look at his early work from the 70’s with classics ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’ and ‘Home Is Where the Hatred Is’ right up to his latest album ‘I’m new here’ from last year and ending on the full 13 min live version of ‘The Bottle’.”
