Every scene needs torchbearers, and—at the moment—grime has Elijah & Skilliam. The duo celebrate the genre at a strange time. It’s no longer the scene du jour, its central proponents like Dizzee Rascal and Wiley having gone on to bigger (and more mainstream) things. It doesn’t help that the ones left in their wake seemed unyielding in their devotion to formula. That’s what has made Elijah & Skilliam’s arrival so fresh. As they tell it in this interview with Tom Lea, they entered into the game because no one else was playing (or making) the records they wanted to hear.
