Floating Points is the recording alias of London-based DJ/composer/producer Sam Shepherd. If you’re already familiar with his work it’s likely that your access point was “Vacuum Boogie,” his irresistible 2009 track that despite its languid 116 beats per minute was among that year’s major cross-genre success stories. In understanding Shepherd’s approach to club music, it’s important to point out his background in jazz piano and composition. However, in this case we’re talking about far more than half-arsed Rhodes keys over a 4/4 kick. On tracks like “People’s Potential” the feeling was that a true dialogue had been struck up between the poles of Shepherd’s interests. 2011’s Shadows EP was as interesting an interpretation of club music you’re likely to hear. (And we thusly gave it a 5.) ”

“Kai Campos and Dominic Maker, who make up the electronic duo Mount Kimbie, take over the 6 Mix for a Future Electronica special.
Mount Kimbie released their debut album Crooks & Lovers last year. It was received with critical acclaim, featuring on over thirty Best of 2010 lists. In this programme they map out an hour of their musical influences, covering everything from The Fall to Wild Beasts. In addition, they also play a selection of new music that they are currently listening to.
The second hour is curated by producer, DJ and bandleader Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points. Sam’s musical choices span many spectrums from boogie-house to jazzy beats, which are reflected in the various releases on his and DJ Alexander Nut’s imprint, Eglo Records. From his early years, Sam spent time studying classical composition and jazz piano and is currently working on a Ph.D. in Pharmacology. In this 6 Mix Sam plays tracks that have informed his compositions and some new things that he’s into at the moment.”
