“Discussing dissonance and drone music with living legend John Cale, OBE (The Velvet Underground), as well as musician Oliver Coates.
This month marks the 50th (yes, fiftieth!) anniversary of the formation of the Velvet Underground, that seminal, thrilling, experimental, difficult band from New York City. Also, on November 7th Tate Liverpool opening their ‘Transmitting Andy Warhol’ exhibition, celebrating the career of the man who masterminded the Velvet Underground’s success.
So … what better time to invite John Cale on to the show. Cale moved from Wales to New York in 1963, and soon founded the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed. They went on to change rock and roll forever (no exaggeration). Since the Velvet Underground, Cale has produced records for Patti Smith, Nick Drake, The Stooges, Squeeze and Iggy Pop. He has also continued making the most wild and wonderful rock, classical and drone music of his own.
Cale will be joined by another expert on dissonance and drone music – cellist and electronic composer Oliver Coates. He is known for his collaborations with the likes of Jonny Greenwood, Mira Calix, Boards of Canada, Mica Levi, Seb Rochford and Nico Muhly.”
