“The Don’s selections cross time, space and genre. Each week, as well as blending his favourite new music with classics from the UK, USA, Jamaica, Africa and way beyond, he highlights a piece of Crucial Vinyl – a cherished album from his own collection. This week it’s Dusty Springfield’s classic fifth album, Dusty in Memphis, released in 1968.
Don says, “Dusty’s first complete album of R&B songs didn’t fare too well when it first came out. Even though she’d assembled three brilliant producers Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd and Arif Mardin, top-flight Memphis musicians, who’d worked with the likes of Elvis and Wilson Picket and celebrated songwriters such as Goffin & King, Bacharach & David, Mann & Weill and Randy Newman, it was a commercial flop and failed to make a dent in the album charts in the US or the UK. Eventually it was accepted as a masterpiece, and in 2001, two years after Dusty passed away, it belatedly received a Grammy Hall of Fame award.”.”
