“Gilles speaks in depth to pioneering UK producer, Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet.
London-born Kieran formed the band Fridge whilst at school, with friends Adem Ilhan and Sam Jeffers – the trio released their first album in 1997 on Output Recordings. The following year, he started to release under the Four Tet moniker and this year saw the arrival of his 8th full length Four Tet album, Morning/Evening.
Aside from his solo works, he has collaborated with a whole host of musicians and producers, noticeably with the late jazz drummer Steve Reid, Burial and Thom Yorke and has remixed artists such as The xx, Aphex Twin, Beth Orton, Battles and Radiohead. Last year saw him collaborate on a film composition for a project by Sofia Mattioli, alongside Jamie xx – who he DJed with at last year’s 6 Music Festival Late in Newcastle.
In this programme, Kieran talks about his career so far and also dips in to his record box for some sublime selections.”

“Bastien Keb is a prodigiously talented multi-instrumentalist, who makes a living writing music for TV and film. A guitarist first and foremost, you’ll hear him play trumpet, bass, drums, flute and more on this debut record, as well as layering his voice to strangely moving effect. His music belies a love for Curtis Mayfield and Sun Ra, though his voice might suggest Bon Iver, channeled through a soulful 80s kaleidoscope. A truly original new artist for 2015, it’s little surprise he’s found a home on the same label as Mo Kolours, for the similarities are striking. His Worldwide mix joins the dots between his multitude of influences, from The Stylistics to Sun Ra.”

“Gilles is back in the studio for another Saturday afternoon mix up selection, joining the musical dots between soul, hip hop, house, afro, electronica, jazz and beyond, in his own inimitable style. This week he speaks to Indian-born singer Asha Puthli about her life in music, including working with Ornette Coleman, Henry Threadgill and Andy Warhol.
Born and raised in Bombay, Asha moved to New York to pursue her love of jazz. Whilst there, she met Columbia Records impresario John Hammond, who had forged a career discovering acts like Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. Hammond sent her to record with avant-garde pioneer Ornette Coleman, with whom she recorded two tracks – “What Reason Could I Give” and “All My Life”. So far, Asha’s career has resulted in ten albums, various film appearances and collaborations with Barry White, Roy Ayers and Don Cherry.”

Gilles also replays some session tracks from his week sitting in for Lauren Laverne; there’s another chance to hear live music from Laetitia Sadier, Eska, Matthew Halsall and Geoff Barrow’s BEAK.”

Consisting of Billy Fuller, Matt Williams, and Portishead’s Geoff Barrow , they released the 4-track EP ‘The Meader’ earlier in the year. Half of the tracks on the EP are by Beak, the remainder being from the band’s alter ego have also recently completed a score for the upcoming Tom Geens’ psychological drama ?’Couple In A Hole’. Plenty to talk to them about, and never a dull moment with this lot.?Boundaries are there to be eaten.”

Now he’s slowing things down and taking his pointers from soul and soundtracks with the wonderful ‘Into Forever’ album. He’ll be performing tracks for us live with extraordinary vocalist Joesphine Oniyama.”

“Gilles brings his unique, world-tinged flavours to daytime 6 Music. Joined for live music by Zimbabwe-born, Lewisham-raised Eska, whose self-titled debut has made this year’s Mercury Prize shortlist.
Since the release of her Matthew Herbert-produced debut EP, Gatekeeper, in 2013, Eska has been generating a hefty amount of buzz. She has provided guest vocals and songwriting duties for the like of Grace Jones, Zero 7, The Cinematic Orchestra and Tony Allen, and finally, earlier this year, released her long-awaited self-titled debut album. The album was made with producer Louis “Slipperz” Hackett and Dave Okumu (singer/guitarist in Mercury nominees The Invisible, and producer for Jessie Ware), and has drawn comparisons to Kate Bush, Erykah Badu, and Lee Scratch Perry – a list eclectic enough to suggest that Eska’s sound is, in fact, entirely her own.”

Jamie first received acclaim for Night Air, a Burial-produced single, in 2010; the same year he released his debut album Mirrorwriting. Four years on, he is set to return with his second album release, Making Time. The first single from it, called Sharpness, has been supported across 6 Music from the likes of Lauren Laverne, Mary Anne Hobbs and Gilles. Jamie performs two live tracks at the 6 Music studios and talks about the process behind writing the new material.”
