Chris Liebing is a German techno DJ, producer, and label owner known for his influential role in the global techno music scene. Born on December 11, 1968, in Gießen, Germany, he has been a prominent figure in electronic music for several decades.
Liebing’s music is characterized by its powerful and driving techno sound, often featuring pounding beats, dark atmospheres, and relentless rhythms. He has released numerous tracks and albums on various labels, including his own CLR (Chris Liebing Recordings) label. Some of his notable tracks include “Gassenhauer,” “The Biggest Ten Inches I Have Ever Seen,” and “Novembergrey.”
In addition to his productions, Chris Liebing is renowned for his DJ sets, which are celebrated for their energy and intensity. He has performed at top clubs and festivals worldwide, captivating techno enthusiasts with his skillful mixing and track selection.

“When Smoke Machine started doing parties in Taipei, and then created a revered online mix series, it was clear that it was the work of people with impeccable taste. On his RA Podcast, we hear a snippet of an all-night set recorded at 宀 earlier this year, and it begins with some heavily broken, UK-style club music, keeping at this open-ended view of techno as it barrels on for two hours, gradually getting faster all the while. He has a style and flair that feels both old-school—or maybe just late ’00s—but also cutting-edge.”

Although his Ganja Records label and tracks released under his own name and with the Ganja Kru have helped, it’s the “DJ” at the front of Hype’s name that has proved most important in raising his profile to the level of the Grooverider’s, Goldie’s, and LTJ Bukem’s of drum’n’bass. A battle DJ of renown (he represented England in the 1989 DMCs), Hype had a history of electrifying deckwork before moving on from his reggae and hip-hop roots in the late ’80s and latching onto house and hardcore. He was an early force on one of London’s most influential pirate stations, Fantasy FM, and since then he’s consistently topped bills on the international DJ circuit, landing awards for Best Male DJ and Best Radio DJ (in 1994 and 1995, respectively) at the U.K.’s prestigious Hardcore Awards. He’s also one of London’s popular Kiss FM’s biggest attractions and was the force behind Suburban Base’s popular multi-volumed mixed compilation series, Drum and Bass Selection. A champion of jungle’s dancefloor purity, Hype has also rallied consistently against jungle’s compartmentalization into “artificial” scenes such as ambient/intelligent and hip-hop/ragga.
