Resident Advisor Exchange RA.EX033 with Ben Watt

RA walks slowly through the Buzzin’ Fly head’s lengthy career. Some may know Ben Watt as the head of Buzzin’ Fly. Many may think of him as one-half of the celebrated London party Lazy Dog. Most remember him as the man behind Tracey Thorn in Everything But The Girl. A number of people may even have the record he did with Robert Wyatt in the early ’80s. To link all of these Ben Watts together, however, is the hard part. Right now, Watt is largely focused on his aforementioned imprint, which he’ll be celebrating in the capital with a party later this month. But when we caught up with him in London in February, we walked slowly bit by bit through his career thus far. Along the way, we found out how Prince, Wham, Sade, Stan Getz, Photek, Spring Heel Jack, Joe Smooth and many, many more have shaped his career. ”

Raphael Saadiq Fireside Chat for RBMA Radio

“A man of taste and many talents, Raphael Saadiq has been raising the bar for versatility within the world of r&b for more than 20 years. He first came to prominence as a founding member of swingbeat trio Tony! Toni! Toné! who scored multiple platinum plaques and crafted countless genre classics such as ‘Little Walter’ or ‘Feels Good’ throughout the late ’80s and early ’90s. After breaking up with the band, he went on to work as a producer for the likes of Q-Tip, D’Angelo and Erykah Badu, leaving a heavy mark on yet another era of black music, the then-burgeoning neo soul movement. Saadiq also founded acclaimed supergroup Lucy Pearl with Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest and Dawn Robinson of En Vogue, and worked his studio magic on songs by some of the biggest names in music history, from John Legend, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and The Roots, to The Isley Brothers, Stevie Wonder, and Earth Wind & Fire. Recent years have seen him record and perform mostly as a solo artist, touching on an ever broader set of influences and music styles, from blaxploitation funk (under his Ray Ray moniker) to vintage Motown soul to bluesy stylings alongside a certain Mick Jagger. Skyy, can you feel me? We certainly can.”
