6 Mix 2011-08-20 Orbital Classic 6 Mix

“Legendary dance duo Orbital recount their personal history of dance music and the part they played in helping shape the movement. Best known for seminal dance tunes including Chime and Halcyon, Orbital reformed in 2009after a five year hiatus, headlining festivals all over the world including the Big Chill Festival and Get Loaded In The Park. The band also presented three 6 Mix programmes, playing the music which inspired them growing up from punk to dub. Brothers Paul and Phil Hartnoll play artists including Inner City and Pierre’s Fantasy Club, sharing their memories of those tunes and the part they played in influencing Orbital’s sound. In the second hour of the show there’s an exclusive hour long live set from the band, recorded live at the Forum, Sydney in February last year, featuring classic tracks and new material.”

Resident Advisor podcast #273 by Renaissance Man

“Electro and beyond by way of Finland. It seems as though any sound is up for grabs in Renaissance Man’s studio. The Finnish duo sampled spraycans on their 2009 debut through Dubsided; used scat singers and (synthesized) insects on Made to Play; and chopped-up religious chants via Sound Pellegrino. Their forthcoming album, The Renaissance Man Project, runs even further with this approach. Ticking clocks, ping-pong balls, fireworks and sitars are just a few of the overt sonic sources, although many of the tear-out inclinations of Downtown and Jaxxon’s previous releases have been scrubbed from the palette, leaving behind an air of experimentation and genre explorations.”

As head of East London’s Shiva Soundsystem, Nerm has Djed all over the world, from touring India to playing major festivals including Glastonbury. He’s also been a resident at Ministry of Sound in Birmingham, fronted an electro punk band and has the distinction of being the only person to play Marilyn Manson on the BBC Asian Network. A lifelong Prince fan, Nerm cites the purple one as the inspiration for sending him on his journey intro cross genre alternative music. He’s currently producing his own material and consulting on film soundtracks for Kidulthood director Menhaj Huda. In his first 6 Mix Nerm plays an eclectic selection of genre spanning music, from drum ‘n’ bass to metal, via electro and dubstep.”

FACT mix 275 by Maria Minerva

“FACT mix 275 is by Maria Minerva. The London-based singer/producer, real name Maria Juur, has just released her first “proper” album, Cabaret Cixous, on Britt and Amanda Brown’s irrepressible Not Not Fun label. It’s the usual jumble of signifiers we’ve come to expect from Minerva, and NNF in general, its valium-hazed, lo-fi house grooves and over-sexed Euro-pop mannerisms gathered under a title invokes both post-punk visionaries Cabaret Voltaire and French reminist playwright Hélène Cixous.”
