“Club trends come and go, but Steve Bug has been a constant in dance music over the last two decades. His Poker Flat label has been a key source of crisp, pared-down tech house since its launch in 1999. It started with a bang: the first EP featured Steve Bug’s “Loverboy,” a slinky house track that would help define the label’s sound and, in time, become one of its hits. That record came during a turning point in Bug’s life—his move from Hamburg to Berlin, the slowing-down of his productions and the beginning of a successful run as the head of three labels. With Poker Flat’s 15th anniversary celebrations winding down, we invited Bug by our Berlin office and found him in an especially talkative mood. He took us through his formative experiences at Hamburg’s Front club, his days as a hairdresser and the changes he’s seen over the years in the dance music business.”
