Rob Booth + Luke Vibert – Solid Steel Show 2015-05-08

Big up Rob Booth!!! 🙂
“Rob Booth steps up in Hour 1 with a mix celebrating 2 years of the excellent Houndstooth record label, where he heads up A & R and he also runs the well respected Electronic explorations podcast. Another Falty DL Solid Steel intro starts the show and Rob had this to say about his mix;
“I wanted to present the mix in two parts, the Solid Steel way. The 1st half showcases repertoire primarily from the 1st eighteen months, no better way than starting with our inaugural record, the Present Tense 12” by Call Super, such an exciting artist culminating with his recent critically acclaimed debut album. Of course I also had to include a few tracks from the Soul Music LP, Paul Woolford’s Special Request moniker, especially the Hackney Parrot VIP, coupled with the polished jungle/techno experimentalism of Akkord and the 160bpm mosaic of Throwing Snow.
As the mix enters the 2nd half the emphasis moves to our latest signings, Berlin based Marquis Hawkes, Norwegian duo Soft as Snow and LA duo 18+, who’ve kept us busy this past year with the mix concluding with Jassy Graz on vocals, a personal favourite, was so good to see Ross and Jassy invited to Maida Vale LIVE for Radio 1. I can’t stress enough the privilege of being on SS, I’ve been archiving these shows for so long now””
In Hour 2 it’s Luke Vibert, a man of many monikers including Wagon Christ, Plug, Amen Andrews and Kerrier District, under which he recently released an album entitled 4 on Hypercolour. This is the first Kerrier District album in over 10 years since the Rephlex release back in 2004. Luke has been a guest at Solid Steel club nights over the years and this is his 5th mix, his music has been a firm fixture on the show for over 20 years. He’s even turned out a version of the Solid Steel intro especially for us and not for the first time either. And so on to his mix for this week, with artist titles such as Ragga Houston, Drexipan and AFX Jackson, you know as always with Luke Vibert, you’re in for something unexpected. When asked to sum up his mix, he simply said;
“It’s sum of my stupid mash-ups put together!””

FACT Mix 432 by Luke Vibert

“This week’s FACT mix comes from Luke Vibert, on the eve of his new album Ridmik.
Vibert has been releasing music since the early ’90s, drawing from the approach and aesthetics of UK hardcore, hip-hop and acid house, and charting a course across several pseudonyms – including Wagon Christ and Plug, two of Vibert’s most celebrated projects that are still trucking today (both released records – Toomorrow and Back On Time, respectively – as recently as 2011).”

Solid Steel Show 2013-01-18 Ben UFO, DK and Luke Vibert

“This week we feature a mix from Ben UFO celebrating the release of his Fabric Live CD. We kick off with Helm and a new track from Pev & Kowton on the Hessle Audio label that he runs alongside Pearson Sound and Pangaea. Then it’s onto the Mark Fell remix for Fennesz, Pairs from the excellent Daphni and a classic Nu Groove cut from N.Y. House’n Authority and a recent Planet E track from Carls Davis.
DK steps up to highlight forthcoming releases from the Ninja Tune family of labels. Big Dada is represented with tracks from new signing Vision, the grandaddy of UK hip hop Roots Manuva and the legendary Dobie. Falty DL features 4 times with tracks off his Hardcourage album on Ninja Tune, his remix of Dobie and remixed by Martyn. The Bug returns with the awesome Warrior Queen on Acid Ragga and Clark does a fine remix for Letherette, plus tracks from Lapalux on Brainfeeder and Moire on Werkdiscs.
We move into Hour 2 and for our 25th Anniversary we encouraged guests to deliver something different. This week Luke Vibert (who has appeared many times on the show) does exactly that with a high octane opening section showcasing the edit kings from the late eighties. Often found on the b-side of club records, editors such as Omar Santana, Carlos Berrios, Chep Nunez and the Latin Rascals transformed tracks with quick fire cuts for artists like Rochelle, Corina, Bad Boy Orchestra, Stone and Sweet Sensation who are all featured and we get a Luke Vibert treatment on top. Brand New Funk and Ethel Beatty offer a respite from all this, as well as a sublime gospel track from Pastor TL Barrett, before closing with Omar Souleyman, Tipper and Tomita.”

Luke Vibert – Fireside Chat on RBMA Radio

“It’s fair to say that musicians detest pigeonholing. Luke Vibert, also known as Wagon Christ, Plug, Amen Andrews, Kerrier District – and more – gets around this burden by having a musical personality verging on schizophrenia. His multiple personalities provide a rich output of work ranging from experimental drum ‘n’ bass on one album, via instrumental hip hop on the next, to acid house comfortably sitting somewhere in the middle. Hailing from Cornwall, UK, he grew up on hip hop and Herbie Hancock, down the round from Aphex Twin, whose early bedroom tapes passed around the area inspired Luke to depart from his youthful punk bands into solo electronic composition. An avid record collector with a post-modern approach to music, Luke samples rare grooves and interesting library music from his collection to create a unique sound. His work is displayed across many seminal record labels, from leading 90s label Rising High to Mo’Wax, from Nina Tune to Warp. Along with Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, or Mark Pritchard, Luke Vibert approaches music inventively. You’re never certain of where he will lead you next. His ethos is perhaps best summed up by the title of his own release, ‘Journey Into The Unknown’ (Mo’Wax). Or if that doesn’t sound right just take ‘I Love Acid’ (Warp).”
