Late Junction 2025-06-06 Yara Asmar and Quinie in session

“Verity Sharp shares the fruits of our latest exclusive collaboration session, a meeting of multi-instrumentalist and puppeteer Yara Asmar and Glasgow-based Scots singer and interpreter Quinie.
Yara Asmar makes use of lo-fi recording methods and works with a range of sound sources including the accordion, voice, field recordings, metallophone, deconstructed and disassembled toys, and electronics. Her work is known to be deeply-affecting, raw, intimate, and strongly rooted in place. In 2020, during the pandemic, Yara Asmar turned to recording music at home on cassettes and her mobile phone, using her grandma’s Hohner Marchesa accordion, a piano and field recordings of hymns sung in churches around Lebanon. Her work is known to be deeply affecting, raw, intimate, and strongly rooted in place. On her 2023 album, she explores ideas of depersonalisation and disconnection from our immediate surroundings, explaining in an interview that “Us, who remain here, create places that protect us from things that are happening around us”. While her most recent release, Sighs II, shows the vibratory potential of metals, reflecting on the idea that metal is responding, rather than resonating, actively shaping its own afterlife.
Quinie, aka Josie Vallely, is a Glasgow-based Scots singer whose work explores landscape, place and ancestors. Quinie’s vocals use a blend of sean nos style melodies, children’s rhyme and story poems and are, at their core, inspired by Scottish Traveller singers. Whilst conscious of not being a member of the Traveller community, she has been inspired by Traveller friends who taught her that settled people sharing these songs could contribute to raising awareness. “Scottish Travellers are marginalised and discriminated against in modern Scotland, despite being custodians of so many of our important traditions. So I started to perform them and tell this story.” Her third album, released in May 2025, was made following a pilgrimage across the West of Scotland on her horse, collecting and interpreting songs as she went.
Elsewhere in the show, Verity Sharp shares a collaboration between artist and slime mould, the fruits of which bear an articulation of grief fuelled by ecological decline; and a paean to trans lives. Plus, a shimmering, beating, flittering, bubble-like response to a cassette tape score, and a soulful, improvised delivery of folk tales told via mini-choir from Chicago.”

Late Junction 2025-05-30 Charms, Totems and Jars of Snakes

“Join Verity Sharp as she serves up our latest round of ear-bending adventures in sound.
We meet scattered drum and synth rituals to ward off evil from Portuguese duo Amuleto Apotropaico as well as Roxane Métayer’s hypnotic ‘totemic modulations’ from the forest floor. Elsewhere, there’s snake-like tape manipulations; plus poetic reflections from Fred Moten meet the clattering bass of Brandon López.”

Late Junction 2025-05-23 At home with Richard Dawson

“Grab a brew and take a pew for a very special edition of Late Junction, as we head to Northumberland to pay a visit to the home of Geordie troubadour Richard Dawson.
A folk favourite, sonic storyteller, avant-garde experimenter and poignant worldbuilder, Rich’s music often makes epics out of the domestic, inhabiting the perspectives of intimate characters on emotional journeys. His latest album The End of the Middle digs deep into the inner workings of a family unit – in his own words, it is ‘stripped back, stark and naked’.
Jennifer Lucy Allan heads to Rich’s home just outside Newcastle to delve into his record collection with him, pulling out highlights from his huge and varied treasure trove, as well as a visit to his allotment for a quick bit of weeding and plenty of cups of tea. Rich shares selections and stories from his time working in Newcastle’s record shops, the music that has shaped him, and the voices that have stuck with him.”

Late Junction 2025-05-16 Forest songs and the sound of metal

“Verity Sharp tunes into the wild and wondrous sounds of music’s hinterlands. We hear new work from Baltimore-based duo Matmos, who continue their playful sonic experiments with commonplace objects, this time sculpting an album entirely from the resonances of metallic materials. Japanese free jazz icon Akira Sakata and Greek avant-garde guitarist Giotis Damianidis also present their first-ever duo recording, captured live in Brussels after years of intuitive collaboration.
Plus, experimental soundscapes from Latin America: Bogotá-born sound artist Colombian Drone Mafia joins forces with Mexican composer and violinist Gibrana Cervantes, and producer Aboutface shares an intercultural collaboration with the Indigenous Wampís community in the Peruvian Amazon, supporting efforts against illegal deforestation and ecocide.”

Late Junction 2025-05-09 Cole Pulice’s mixtape

“Verity Sharp serves up a pleasantly discombobulating mixtape crafted by the California-based electroacoustic saxophonist, improviser and composer Cole Pulice.
Cole’s music weaves together the sounds of shimmering cosmic jazz, ripples of electroacoustic minimalism and the twinkly playfulness of a video game soundtrack. Collaboration is central to their practice and process of music-making, both with other artists and with their audiences – Cole believes that “listening rituals are forms of magic… the relationship between musical listening and creating is deeply interrelated, even symbiotic – they necessitate each other. In other words: listening can be a form of composition, and composition a form of listening.” Inspiration come from the likes of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Terry Riley and Pauline Oliveros, but also from sounds in nature that they attempt to recreate through their instruments. Their mixtape for Late Junction reflects these influences and their belief in the magical power of listening – tune in to be bewitched…
Elsewhere Verity shares chamber music for lawn mowers, a journey on horseback sung in Scots language, and spiritual jazz inspired by an ancient astrological stone circle.”

Late Junction 2025-04-25 Lechuga Zafiro’s mixtape

“Verity Sharp presents a mind-bending mixtape from self-styled ‘amphibian’ Lechuga Zafiro. The Uruguayan producer’s approach to production has been dubbed ‘club concrète’, bringing cutting edge sound design to recordings collected through his travels – from the sound of metal, glass and water, to toads, sea lions and pigs. A close affinity with frogs provided the initial creative spark for Zafiro’s latest album, Desde los oídos de un sapo (From the Ears of a Toad), a free flowing combination of Afro-Latin folkloric rhythms, ambient field recordings, and fierce electronics. To celebrate the album’s release, Lechuga Zafiro offers a glimpse into his sonic universe with this Late Junction mixtape.
Elsewhere in the show, a newly-released lost recording of esteemed pianist Thelonious Monk playing live in Paris in 1966, surreal minimalism from French singer-songwriter Chicaloyoh, and a track from treasured Wassoulou singer Nahawa Doumbia.”

Late Junction 2025-04-11 Pre-colonial Peruvian seashells and liberatory cycling garments

“Verity Sharp takes the stage for another ninety minutes of ear-bending ventures in music and sound, including earnest, wonky lo-fi soul from the hotbed of Black excellence and revolutionary sounds that was the 1960s campus of the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Plus, new sonic adventures for pre-colonial indigenous Peruvian Chimú ceremonial instruments – whistles and warm water seashells used as trumpets – courtesy of researchers Dimitri Manga Chávez and Ricardo López Alcas.
Elsewhere, a track from the cassette vaults of short-lived ’80s cult Japanese label DD Records, whose tightknit network of artists were dedicated both to the art of tape-trading and to making infectuous and strange-sounding songs; and there’s paired-back chamber music from Copenhagen-based trio Bloomers, a group named after the inventor of the liberatory women’s cycling garment, the bloomer.”

Late Junction 2025-04-04 Encrypted pianos and half-forgotten archives

“Jennifer Lucy Allan is our guide through the outer thickets of adventurous listening, uncovering a half-forgotten archive of music from Japan’s cult label DD. Records and Singaporean sound artist Bani Haykal’s abandoned pianos, which have since been retrofitted to send encrypted messages. Plus, Mongolian singer Enji reflects on the in-betweenness of migration, while Lebanese artist Nour Sokhon and Montreal-based media-maker Stefan Christoff collaborate on a sonic exploration of identity and displacement.”

Late Junction 2025-03-28 Able Noise and Sandy Chamoun in session

“Verity Sharp presents the fruits of our latest improvised collaboration session, in which cross-continent improv duo Able Noise meet Lebanese vocalist Sandy Chamoun.
Following their debut album release at the end of last year, Able Noise head back to their improvisational live roots for this Late Junction session. Comprised of George Knegtel and Alex Andropoulos on baritone guitar and drums respectively, the duo create minimalist rolling and stuttering pieces that play with varied tempos and the distinctive timbres that each of their respective instruments make possible. Often utilising live sampling and tape recorders to layer and amplify their sounds, there is a woozy, clattering weight to their performance approach.
Able Noise are joined in session by Lebanese vocalist and multi-disciplinary artist Sandy Chamoun. Sandy explores Arabic singing traditions through the research and performance of folk song, channelling her findings into original compositions that meld the historical with political and social critique. Her most recent release is as a part of the Beirut-based group Ghadr, in which she pits her soulful vocal stylings against improvised harsh electronics and distorted guitars.
Elsewhere in the show, experimental choir NYX showcase sounds of primal energy and delicate introspection with their new self-titled release and we delve into the meditative drift and fractured rhythms of Manuel Carbone’s latest offering ‘IN FONDO’. Plus there’s a personified street sweeper and possessed AI poetry from Tujiko Noriko.”

Late Junction 2025-03-21 Brunhild Ferrari’s Mixtape

“Verity Sharp presents a mixtape from the musique concrète and electroacoustic composer Brunhild Ferrari. Born in Frankfurt but based in Paris since her early twenties, Ferrari traces her musical memories across her mixtape, moving from childhood recollections of cabaret songs, to her love of jazz and fascination with musique concrète and alternative composition. In the mix, she also pays tribute to the work of her late husband Luc Ferrari.
Elsewhere in the show, Verity freewheels into the new season with music to mark the first day of spring. We’ll hear the sounds of beautifully-deconstructed bird song realised with the help of 3D ambisonic microphone recordings courtesy of British composer Natasha Barratt. Plus, new sounds from Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist Macie Stewart and more from Lonnie Holley’s forthcoming release, Tonky.”
