Diplo + DK – Solid Steel Show 2014-12-05

“Solid Steel (5th December) It’s a huge show this week as we welcome back Diplo to Solid Steel. 10 years ago Diplo released his album Florida on Big Dada and played his first UK gig in an intimate venue at the monthly Solid Steel club night (and twice more that year). He plays somewhat larger venues now, including a residency in Las Vegas and Madison Square Garden on NYE. To celebrate the reissue of F10RIDA, he drops a mix exclusively for Solid Steel which features the new Eprom remix of Big Lost from the album, plus music across the board from Deadboy, Radiohead, Pharcyde, Kaytranada, Heaven 17 and our very own Bonobo.
In Hour 2, DK takes a look back at some of the releases in 2014 from the Ninja Tune family of labels, kicking off with two Big Dada heavyweights from Run The Jewels and Wiley, plus label mates Kate Tempest and the Mercury Prize winning Young Fathers. There’s music from artists playing at the massive Ninja Tune x Hydra party on Saturday 6th Dec, with Machinedrum, The Bug, Actress, Martyn, Illum Sphere, Falty DL and headliner Bonobo, plus plenty of remixes from the likes of Four Tet, Budgie, Lone, Eprom, Max Graef and Seven Davis Jr. Brainfeeder is represented by Teebs, Taylor McFerrin, Daedelus and Mr Oizo, whilst Kutmah and Name Brand Sound fly the flag for Technicolour, and Nick Hook, Romare and Beat Spacek make up the current crop of releases on Ninja Tune.”

DK + DJ Food and Toddla T – Solid Steel Show 2013-11-29

“Solid Steel (29th November) Toddla T takes his turn to help celebrate our 25th birthday with a mix in his own unique style. The Steel City rudeboy drops a whole heap of brand new music with the Toddla T dub of Duppy by Timberlee kicking off the show, followed by Zouk Bass rhythms from KJ’s and Sandwich Island Bass out of Hawaii and Mark Pritchard with the excellent ‘Make a livin’. It’s more new tracks from Recloose and the first of two spins this week for Ashley Beedle with the Maddslinky remix of Saturday up first on Toddla’s own Girls Music label. Then it’s Donae’o, followed by M.I.A., Mr Mitch remixing Wiley and the sublime vocals of Sampha, all wrapped up with links and dub delays by a man like Toddla T.

In Hour 2 the countdown starts for the Solid Steel 25th Anniversary night at Fire in London with a mix from DK that features some of the artists playing including Mr Scruff, Robin Hexstatic, Four Tet and the new single from Illum Sphere. There’s more new music from Ninja Tune with forthcoming tracks from Falty DL, Beat Spacek and a Maya Jane Coles remix for Bonobo.
DJ Food steps up with a companion piece to last week’s 30 minute mix – Strictly Kev delves deeper and darker into ghostly electronic waters. An acoustic cover of Boards of Canada’s Reach For the Dead, V.I.V.E.K.’s stunning Mantra and Machinedrum’s Centre Your Love lighten the mood slghtly before we delve into witchcraft and sounds from abandoned buildings.”

Solid Steel Show 2013-01-18 Ben UFO, DK and Luke Vibert

“This week we feature a mix from Ben UFO celebrating the release of his Fabric Live CD. We kick off with Helm and a new track from Pev & Kowton on the Hessle Audio label that he runs alongside Pearson Sound and Pangaea. Then it’s onto the Mark Fell remix for Fennesz, Pairs from the excellent Daphni and a classic Nu Groove cut from N.Y. House’n Authority and a recent Planet E track from Carls Davis.
DK steps up to highlight forthcoming releases from the Ninja Tune family of labels. Big Dada is represented with tracks from new signing Vision, the grandaddy of UK hip hop Roots Manuva and the legendary Dobie. Falty DL features 4 times with tracks off his Hardcourage album on Ninja Tune, his remix of Dobie and remixed by Martyn. The Bug returns with the awesome Warrior Queen on Acid Ragga and Clark does a fine remix for Letherette, plus tracks from Lapalux on Brainfeeder and Moire on Werkdiscs.
We move into Hour 2 and for our 25th Anniversary we encouraged guests to deliver something different. This week Luke Vibert (who has appeared many times on the show) does exactly that with a high octane opening section showcasing the edit kings from the late eighties. Often found on the b-side of club records, editors such as Omar Santana, Carlos Berrios, Chep Nunez and the Latin Rascals transformed tracks with quick fire cuts for artists like Rochelle, Corina, Bad Boy Orchestra, Stone and Sweet Sensation who are all featured and we get a Luke Vibert treatment on top. Brand New Funk and Ethel Beatty offer a respite from all this, as well as a sublime gospel track from Pastor TL Barrett, before closing with Omar Souleyman, Tipper and Tomita.”

Solid Steel Show 2012-01-20 Pinch, DK and DJ Food Interview

“Pinch is our guest this week and it’s a mix celebrating the release of his FabricLive CD. He has been a key figure in the Bristol music scene and has gone on to create his own label Tectonic Records. Although well known for his dubstep, this mix takes us through the house and techno end of the spectrum and although there isn’t a tracklist available, you’ll spot the already classic ‘Music deep inside’ by Zed Bias and Ossie with ‘Tarantula’.
DK continues with the excellent ‘Spaceman Funk’ by Brawther which leads us into part of his ‘space themed’ set created especially for the DJ Food album launch party at the Greenwich Planetarium. A whole galaxy of space related tracks ranging from spaced out disco from Ednah Holt, the cosmic sounds of Mystic Moods, Talkling Heads with ‘Moon Rocks’ and of course, it wouldn’t be complete without Sun Ra and his Intergalactic Cosmo Arkestra.
In hour 2, our very own Strictly Kev from DJ Food is in the spotlight with an interview about his new album ‘The Search Engine’, which is released on the 23rd January. We get an insight into the making of his album, the collaborators involved and the artwork created by Henry Flint and Strictly Kev himself. We also get to hear tracks from the album along with music that has influenced him over the years, with tracks from Adam and the Ants, Kraftwerk, Grace Jones and Boards of Canada.”

Solid Steel Show 2012-01-06 Bonobo, Jack The Hustler and DK

“It’s a New Year and a new logo, and we kick off in suitable style with a mix from Bonobo. One of our former contributors to the acclaimed Solid Steel Mix CD series, Bonobo delivers a mix to ease us into 2012. Music from Seams, Nufrequency and the Ramadanman refix for Jamie Woon sooth any New Year hangovers. Then it’s an 808 mix of his track ‘We could forever’ and we move onto some of his musical highlights from 2011 with tracks from Juk Juk, Fourtet and Falty DL, plus Blawan and Mosca upping the beats and bass. We close with lush sounds from Koreless, Ifan Dafydd and Sepalcure, as we look forward to Bonobo’s ‘Black Sands Remixed’ album released next month.
In hour 2 we welcome Jack the Hustler, Finnish producers on the new Overcooked Record Label out of Paris. It’s straight in with the excellent Chaos in the CBD remix for Kastle, followed by the Erykah Badu classic ‘On and On’ remixed by Look Like. Another track in the show from Mosca, plus Breach, Pasteman and music from the guys themselves, before ending on classic house from Chez Damier on KMS.
Finally DK steps in for an exclusive preview of the lost classic Back On Time by Luke vibert aka Plug. Back On Time is a collection of unreleased eccentric d’n’b tracks recorded over 15 years ago. It follows the highly-acclaimed Plug album from 1996, Drum ‘n’ Bass for Papa which was originally released by Blue Planet Recordings. ”

“We continue our review of 2011 looking back at the most popular mixes by the Solid Steel resident DJ’s, as voted by you the listeners. Again ‘In no particular order’, we start with DK’s first ‘Cymatic Frequencies’ mix from January (that also came with an AV mix). Kidkanevil, Ramadanman and Maddslinky remixed Toddla T all feature, alongside a Ninja Trio and a Big Dada double, plus James Blake, Caribou and Bassnectar.
The Hexstatic mix that also appeared in January, was your favourite with the classic Royksopp remix of KOC, leading into the lovely electronica Two Dots by Lusine. SBTRKT’s remix of Modeselektors ‘Art&Cash’ leads perfectly into maierial from Robin Hexstatic’s project, plus music from Magnetic Man, Andreya Triana and Dave Angel.
In hour 2 Coldcut’s mix from July got your vote with a live DJ set from Matt Black at the Energy Union party in Brussels. It starts with classic selections from Kwanzaa Posse, Armando Trovajol, Mr Scruff and a KC Flightt hip house track from ’87. Then it’s the Redshape remix of Martyn’s ‘Seventy Four’ and we keep the pace with DJ Naughty and the epic Seiji mix of ‘Timber’.
DJ Food aka Strictly Kev’s mix from October was a favaourite, celebrating the release of his third EP – ‘Magpies, Maps & Moons’ and he compiled a ‘Magpie Reader’ full of tracks from it, his collaborators and influences. Featuring exclusive unreleased tracks and remixes as well as his trademark spoken word treasures it’s a sonic guide to where his head is at and paves the way for his album in January.”

Solid Steel Show 2011-12-16 DK and DJ Irk

“Solid Steel in association with Serato (16th December) We continue with the second part of Cymatic Frequencies II by DK, the Video Mixtape reviewing some of his favourite mixes from this year with added visuals. Using more Original Videos from the artist this time and the quality of the music is equally as good as Part 1. It’s a sombre start with Gil Scott-Heron RIP, followed by James Blake and hip hop from Paul White, Danny Brown and Shabazz Palaces. Ninja Tune feature with Mr Scruff, Toddla T, Raffertie and Fink, with Big Dada represented by Wiley & Offshore. There’s 2 from Martyn on Brainfeeder, Zed Bias features 3 times and it’s big club tracks from Joe Goddard, Julio Bashmore and Fourtet. Plus there’s a few classics from Liquid Liquid, Radiohead and Har You Percussion group to close a visual feast.
The votes are in, polling stations closed and for the second year, DJ Irk gets your vote for Mix of the Year. He cropped up a few times in 2011, but it was his mix from March that was the most popular with some bone crunching beats from the likes of Broken Note, Bassnectar and our very own King Cannibal. Then on to some electro-hip hop flavours, showcasing sounds from Dizz1, Cherry Chan and Kiat, plus music from Machinedrum, Bonobo and Modeselektor all mixed to the highest standard. Take another listen.”

“DK returns to the show with ‘Cymatic Frequencies II’ and as before it’s another AV mix. This is Part 1 of ‘Best of 2011’, taking personal favourites from his mixes this year and adding suitable and sometimes breathtaking visuals to compliment the audio. This Video Mixtape includes a few of the artists Original video’s but in most cases visuals have been sourced from animation, CGI, Short Films, archive footage and edited to each track in the mix. Some of the 2011 musical highlights include Africa Hitech, Machinedrum, Peverelist, Skream, Pearson Sound, Thundercat, Michael Kiwanuka and the Stepkids, plus there’s a few dips into the archive with Wayne Smith, Tribe of Issachar, Herbie Hancock, Burial and Vangelis.”

“This week it’s a mix from Falty DL who has an EP out on Ninja Tune in November and it’s straight in with a Mark Pritchard remix for Azymuth and followed closely by Contakt & Mayser, Fourtet and Zed Bias remixed by Falty DL. We continue with 2562, Objekt, unreleased music from Falty DL and classic Warp tracks from Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin, before wrapping it up with a Phillip D Kick Footwork jungle Remix

Solid Steel Show 2011-09-02 Four Tet and DK and interwiew with DELS

“This week Solid Steel welcome back Four Tet who had his first mix on Solid Steel 10 years ago, back in 2001. He was also part of a North American Solid Steel tour that year alongside DJ Food, DK and Bonobo. They all regrouped after the tour back at BBC London for a Solid Steel show spinning records bought only on that tour (Those signed up to the mailing list will be getting a download link for that classic show). His mix celebrates the forthcoming release of his Fabric Live CD and we get a taste of some of the tracks included, with music from Michael Redolfi, Crazy Bald Heads and KMA, plus new music from Fourtet himself. DK opens the second hour with Sam Irl remixed by Cid Rim and DELS new single Capsize, remixed by Marla. Then it’s more new music from Scuba, which drifts nicely into the Stepkids and the strange sounds of Dr Philter Banx from 1975, plus another track off the excellent Paul White album.
This is followed by an interview with Big Dada artist DELS. He talks about his creative process in depth including how he hooked up with Kwes, Roots Manuva, Joe Goddard + Micachu to make his acclaimed album “GOB”, going to the early sidewinder raves, as well talking us through some of the tracks that influenced him growing up, such as Aretha Franklin, Wu Tang Clan, Outkast, Wiley + Animal Collective.”

Solid Steel Show 2011-08-26 DK and Skream

“DK dives straight in with the super heavy ‘Break Broke’ by T.Williams, Zed Bias alongside Mark Pritchard, a second spin for the Roots Manuva album cut ‘Go champ’ and new music from Scuba. We stay on a house tip with Martyn and slip back to ’89 with Carl Craig’s first remix on KMS Records, before going deep with his Planet E classic ‘At Les’. We continue with forthcoming releases from Fourtet, Pangaea and the Breakage remix of Roots Manuva’s single ‘Get the get’. Then it’s a second track from Zed Bias, this time alongside our guest Skream, followed by a carnival selection from Sizzla, Burro Banton and Cutty Ranks. We end with two songs co-written by Nick Ashford RIP starting with ‘California Soul’ sung this time by Edwin Starr and then alongside his wife Valerie Simpson with the epic ‘Stay Free’.
For the second hour, it’s a warm welcome to Skream who treats us to an exclusive Disco flavoured mix especially for Solid Steel. He’s better known for his dubstep productions, but his influences spread far and wide and you only have to check out some of his early sessions on Rinse FM to see that Disco and Funk are well represented. The mix starts out with Canadian synth group Lime, moving onto classic 80’s boogie sounds from Tony Lee and the jazz-funk tinged ‘Space Bass’ by Slick. We also get the sampled ‘Groovin You’ by Harvey Mason and move onto more recent music from The Bucketheads and Daft Punk, before Prince and Five Special close the show.”
