Solid Steel Show 2012-02-10 Raffertie and Coldcut

“Solid Steel in association with Serato (10th February) Coldcut continue bringing you the Broadest Beats with another mix featured in last night’s show presented live on Strongroom.fm. Tune in every Thursday between 7-9pm UK Time for the presented version. We start with the incredible Jill Scott, sliding sweetly into the sounds of Joy Orbison, Photek and ‘Newsflash’ by Diplo featuring Sandra Melody. It’s classic rave from The Prodigy and a nod to that time, with the current DJ Q track ‘All junglist’ , before sweeping through a reggae set from Marcia Aitken, Trinity, Mighty Two and Althea & Donna. We complete hour 1 with The Young Rascals, Hudson Mohawke and a track from the new Bonobo ‘Black Sands remixed’ album with Machinedrum on remix duties.
Raffertie is our guest in hour 2. His latest EP ‘Mass Appeal is out now on Ninja Tune and we get to hear the title track and ‘One track mind’ from the EP, along with a whole host of exclusive unreleased music from the man himself. Most don’t even have a title yet, but they all maintain the high quality of his sonic palette. There’s also tracks from G.H. and Get People, but even they don’t escape his deft touch behind the mixing desk.
Coldcut step back in the room to close the show with music from Nina Simone, Polar and the classic ‘Twilight’ from Maze.”

Solid Steel Show 2011-12-30 DJ Food, Coldcut, DK and Hexstatic

“We continue our review of 2011 looking back at the most popular mixes by the Solid Steel resident DJ’s, as voted by you the listeners. Again ‘In no particular order’, we start with DK’s first ‘Cymatic Frequencies’ mix from January (that also came with an AV mix). Kidkanevil, Ramadanman and Maddslinky remixed Toddla T all feature, alongside a Ninja Trio and a Big Dada double, plus James Blake, Caribou and Bassnectar.
The Hexstatic mix that also appeared in January, was your favourite with the classic Royksopp remix of KOC, leading into the lovely electronica Two Dots by Lusine. SBTRKT’s remix of Modeselektors ‘Art&Cash’ leads perfectly into maierial from Robin Hexstatic’s project, plus music from Magnetic Man, Andreya Triana and Dave Angel.
In hour 2 Coldcut’s mix from July got your vote with a live DJ set from Matt Black at the Energy Union party in Brussels. It starts with classic selections from Kwanzaa Posse, Armando Trovajol, Mr Scruff and a KC Flightt hip house track from ’87. Then it’s the Redshape remix of Martyn’s ‘Seventy Four’ and we keep the pace with DJ Naughty and the epic Seiji mix of ‘Timber’.
DJ Food aka Strictly Kev’s mix from October was a favaourite, celebrating the release of his third EP – ‘Magpies, Maps & Moons’ and he compiled a ‘Magpie Reader’ full of tracks from it, his collaborators and influences. Featuring exclusive unreleased tracks and remixes as well as his trademark spoken word treasures it’s a sonic guide to where his head is at and paves the way for his album in January.”

Solid Steel Show 2011-11-25 Coldcut, Brodinski and Mr Tea

“Jon More from Coldcut takes control this week and it’s straight in with Ultravox, getting a juke workout and we continue in that vein with Nguzunguzu and Cocky Balboa. Then it’s a slice of DnB from Dub Phizix easing over James Blake and onto DJ Spinn, Salva and Mosca.
Brodinski follows with a mix celebrating his Fabric Live mix CD. Darabi kicks off the mix, followed by the Milton Jackson remix for Recloose. Then it’s the super lush Dixon remix of Osunlade’s track Envision and we finish with the epic ‘Feel it’ by Scuba.
Mr Tea is back for another mix checking in with a few beats from Lazer Sword, Luke Vibert and The Herbaliser. Then it’s on to Solid Steel fav, Caribou, Modeslektor and Mumdance alongside our guest in hour 1, Brodinski. The high pace continues with Brackles & Short Stuff, Pangaea, Addison Groove and ending on Exillon.”

Solid Steel Show 2011-07-01 Coldcut and Boca 45

“This week Coldcut return to the show and it’s a live DJ set from Matt Black at the Energy Union party in Brussels earlier this year. It starts with classic selections from Kwanzaa Posse, Armando Trovajol, Mr Scruff and a KC Flightt hip house track from ’87. Then it’s a more recent cut with the Redshape remix of Martyn’s ‘Seventy Four’ and we keep the pace with DJ Naughty, the epic Seiji mix of ‘Timber’, Joy Orbison and another track from Martyn, before dropping down with Ed Solo, Bassnectar and The Bug. In hour 2 we welcome back Boca 45 and it’s been a while since his last 7? only mix so he thought that in these days of slick Ableton mixes, it was time to take it “Back to the crackle”. We get to hear a choice mix of 45 x 7? vinyl records that range from Stezo, Mongo Santamaria, Tom Jones to Gary Newman, The Upsetters and Coldcut. As Jimi Hendrix once said “There’s only 2 types of music, Good and Bad” Enjoy”

Solid Steel Show 2010-12-31 DK, Coldcut, Hexstatic and Strict

“We finish our review of 2010 looking back at the most popular mixes by the ‘Old Skool’ Solid Steel residents, as voted by you the listeners. Again,’In no particular order’, we start with DK’s mix from March kicking off with the excellent Warrior One remix of ‘Eyesdown’ by Bonobo and continue in a leftfield uptempo groove with Martyn, Joy Orbison and Octa Push, before dropping the huge bomb that is the Nero remix of ‘Sincere’. More bass heavy beats follow, before dropping down with new music from the legendary Gil Scott-Heron, Jay Electronica and the original from Billy Stewart. Coldcut’s mix from October was part of the Ninja Tune 20th anniversary celebrations, where they plucked out a few gems from the back catalogue as well as looking forward with tracks from the Ninja Tune XX compilation. DJ Vadim, The Bug and Ghislain Porier all feature alongside remixes of Coldcut tracks from King Jammy and United States of Audio, plus they have their own take on The Heavy’s ‘How you like me now’. Hexstatic’s mix from May celebrating their ‘Trailer Trax’ album, got your vote and it also came with it’s own Video mix. Taking it’s lead from the cheese of drive-in cinema trailers, ‘Grindhouse’ style movies and those Saturday Morning Cinema shorts of all our youths,..we see and hear these elements sliced and diced with techno, dubstep, dancehall and drum and bass rhythms into a whipped up frenzy that’s ‘now available in the foyer!’….. ‘The Mighty Gammera’ destroy Tokyo in a flash, ‘Galaxy Invaders’ scare rednecks with ill fitting plastic suits. Mix in some other favorites from the likes of Mantronix, Dizzee Rascal and DJ Hazard and you have one Blockbuster of a mix! Also from May, Strictly Kev’s winner brewed up a mix with a distinct whiff of Brit nostalgia taking in vintage electronica, psychedelic folk, outer space beats and deep dubstep. Moon Wiring Club, Broadcast & The Focus Group and Lost Idol all featured, plus tracks from Blockhead, James Pants and Gil Scott Heron.”

Solid Steel Show 2010-11-26 Task, Coldcut and Igor Boxx

“This week it’s an epic mix from Task crossing the genres, just how we like it. He delighted us with his last mix back in 2009 and he’s done it again with his ‘Turn my world around’ mix which is already getting props from lots of DJ’s. Task weaves between classic hip hop from Gangstar, Cypress Hill and Public Enemy, plus Block Rockin Beats from the Chemical Brothers, Zinc and the Prodigy. Crissy Criss, TC and Nero provide the dubstep and it’s all laced with Quincy Jones, Oasis, Barry White and even the Mighty Boosh!
In the second hour Matt Black from Coldcut steps up for his own selection from the Ninja XX boxset. Starting with the excellent Rustie remix of Ariel by Stateless and onto music from PRDCTV and The Long Lost, also getting a remix courtesy of Dan Le Sac and Flying Lotus. Kid Koala provides his take on the Blues and it turns brutal when Eskmo meets Amon Tobin for their Eskamon project, before Yppah resets the tone.
Igor Boxx finishes the show with a mix of 1970’s-1980’s jazz-rock-funk from former Czechoslovakia. The Skalpel member releases his album ‘Breslau’ on 29th November and this mix illustrates the origin of his sound from former East Block records.”

BBC 6 Mix 2010-09-26 – Coldcut celebrating 20 years of Ninja Tune

“DJ and production duo Coldcut host a special 6 Mix celebrating the 20th anniversary of their Ninja Tune record label. Founded by the duo – Jonathan Moore and Matt Black – in 1990, Ninja Tune has become one the most important homes for electronic and experimental dance music in the UK. As well as releasing records by Coldcut themselves, Ninja have gone on to start the careers of artists including Luke Vibert, The Herbaliser, DJ Food, Kid Koala and many, many more. The label also pioneered the art of using live visuals in dance music, and its distinctive Ninja logo has become synonymous with the cream of experimental music in Britain. To mark twenty years at its helm, Coldcut present their very own ‘history of Ninja’ 6 Mix, playing and talking about some of the key artists in the label’s history, and looking forward to where it will head in the next few years. The 6 Mix then pits a host of Ninja DJs past and present against each other in an exclusive soundclash, with mini mixes from Mr Scruff, Strictly Kev from DJ Food, Eskmo and Toddla T’s tribute to label stalwart, Roots Manuva.”
