“For Japanese people who have worn kimonos since ancient times, dyeing, which determines the colors and patterns of the garment, has always been of vital importance. When dyeing was introduced from the Asian continent during the Nara period, authentic dyeing began to take root in Japan as well. Later, during the Edo period, when a decrease in warfare and an increase in cotton production caused dyeing to flourish, numerous uniquely Japanese dyeing techniques were born.

Standing on a street corner in the middle of Shinjuku, Fujiya Senkobo has preserved one of these techniques, known as hikizome or brush dyeing, for over 70 years. Dyeing is a traditional local industry in Shinjuku dating back to the Taisho period, and about 40 dyeing workshops still exist in Shinjuku Ward today. Composing patterns in his mind and dyeing extended fabrics with a brush, Takatoshi Nakamura, the third generation owner, states that staying sharp and maintaining perfect physical health are essential in hikizome, where mistakes are simply not permitted.”
