Gilles Peterson Worldwide 2013-06-08 Janelle Monae in conversation

“This week Gilles is joined by US R&B singer, Janelle Monae, who recently collaborated with Erykah Badu on the single QUEEN ahead of her hotly anticipated sophomore album, Electric Lady.
Having grown up in Kansas and studied in New York, it was a chance encounter with Outkast’s Big Boi in Atlanta, which proved key in her being discovered. Big Boi discussed her talents with Bad Boy Records boss, Sean Combs, who swiftly checked her out and signed her to his label. Her debut album, The ArchAndroid, which came out in 2010, earned her a Grammy nomination.”

  1. This must have been one of the most vapid interviews in music history. For an artist who failed to present even a glimpse of the album she was supposedly promoting, Monae was sure full of it. I liked her collab with Badu, but this pointless conversation really made her come across as very arrogant and unlikable. She would have done better to ignore this invitation rather than bumbling through the interview like that, careful to never actually say anything.
