Gilles Peterson is leaving BBC Radio 1 – Skream and Benga gets their own show

There is a big changes to the dance music line up over at Radio 1. The biggest news for me is that our beloved Gilles Peterson is leaving Radio 1, but according to him he is in talks with Radio 6 Music for hopefully a new show on that radio station.

The other big news is that Skream and Benga are getting their own show on Fridays between 11pm and 1am, and Toddla T is also getting a massive show after Skream and Benga. In addition Friction will replace Fabio and Grooverider in the drum & bass show. We will also get new DJs for the In New DJs We Trust show and a new show called BBC Radio 1 Residency with Heidi, Chuckie and Kutski as DJs.
The people leaving are Judge Jules, Gilles Peterson, Kissy Sell Out, Fabio & Grooverider, while Charlie Sloth moves from 1Xtra to Radio 1.

I’m sad to see Gilles leaving Radio 1, but the new line up seems pretty strong. Read the full press release from Radio 1 here. You will of course be served all the shows here on Core News 🙂

  1. I’ve listened to Gilles Peterson for as long as I can remember. So, this really is awful news to an ardent Peterson. 🙁
(I own every album he has put out too).
While the news is sad, I somewhat expected it. Nothing lasts forever, and it’s been a tremendous journey following him.
I think he will find a better slot elsewhere. Maybe 6Music would be a better fit, especially for the more avant-garde jazz he plays.
Mary Anne Hobbs continues to provide us with a fantastic selection of tracks over at XFM, (one show of the week at Core which is a MUST listen), so who knows?
All the best, Gilles. Thank you for the wonderful music you have introduced me to.

  2. thats tragic… gp has done a good job at doing a good job… maybe this will freshen things up a bit because for every good set is like 20 not so good sets.. skream and benga do have tracks but they gotta be with the game… and run with it… and fuck the sell out euro vocal dubstep style… not the look bruvs… a lot of tracks to be made stilll…. i hope the internet is ready

  3. Change was needed, R1 was losing its edge to 1xtra. i.e. no need for R1 to take over 1xtra Happy for Toddla and S&B but i agree with ominae they need to work on their “banter” Now if only Bailey could get 5 days a week….

  4. really, really sad news. first MAH and now Gilles. I really hope Gilles continues on another radio show with the same quality. MAH’s show on Xfm is just not the same as it used to be on Radio1.

  5. Gilles Peterson has continued to promote cutting edge music across the genres and will be sorely missed. However its not a suprise that he’s been cut given the way radio 1’s going. As for Jules, trance hasn’t progressed for the last 8 years. Would like to have seen Heidi be given a more prominent slot given her pedigree.
