Don Letts 2017-02-12 Crucial Vinyl Without Prejudice

“The Don’s selections cross time, space and genre and include Crucial Vinyl from George Michael.
Each week, as well as blending his favourite new music with classics from the UK, USA, Jamaica, Africa and way beyond, Don highlights a piece of Crucial Vinyl – a cherished album from his own collection. He explains why it means so much to him, and features three key tracks. This week it’s Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1, released by George Michael in 1990.
Don says, ‘Unsurprisingly, Wham! didn’t do squat for me, but by the time George made this, his second solo album, written specifically to distance himself from those early days, he was a very different animal. This was his attempt to be taken seriously as songwriter – a big departure from his debut. It received mixed reviews, partly due to it being, with a few exceptions, ballad-based, but went on to produce five hit singles within a year. And, with a contribution from Stevie Wonder, you got the feeling George was exactly where he wanted to be on this record.’.”
