Coldcut + Damon Bell – Solid Steel Show 2014-09-19

“Solid Steel (19th September) Coldcut start the show this week, taking Timber for an acid workout with Jack Frost, followed by Francis Bebey remixed by Daphni, Bambounou and classic Fela which coincides with the excellent Finding Fela documentary in cinema’s now. Then we take a journey back to 1987 as Coldcut deconstruct their classic first release ‘Say Kids What Time Is It?’ and rebuild with the original samples and more, for an archeology extended version.
Jon More from Coldcut had this to say ‘It started by pulling out the original records to photograph – then its…. lets put this back together and I dug out the four track – slung it all in the computer & it ballooned out – enjoy the old skoolness’
In Hour 2 Damon Bell is our guest with a mix of music that has influenced him over the years. The Deepblak Recordings Chief Connoisseur weaves through a mix of Reggae, Funk, African, Jazz and Brazilians flavours with music from James Brown, Horace Andy, Max Romeo, Gilberto Gil and Manu Dibango. His last EP ‘Hue-Man Made’ released on Meda Fury garnered rave reviews and his debut LP follows this Autumn. He told us this ‘The Time Is Now! A mix with a message in the music. Compiled influences translating thoughts and emotion through song. ROOTS MUSIC!”

xxxy + Jon Rust – Solid Steel Show 2014-08-08

“Solid Steel (1st August) In Hour 1 this week we have xxxy on the show following the release of his new Goldfish EP that is released this week. He told us this about his mix;
“A mix of tracks old and new that I have been playing in clubs and tracks that influenced the vibe of the current Ten Thousand Yen release. A mixture of hands in the air bangers and eyes down low bangers.”
Jon Rust picks up in Hour 2 kicking off with legendary drummer Idris Muhammad RIP and had this to say;
“So here’ s my 60 minute mix for Solid Steel – taking in everything from the soul of Idris Muhammad to the industrial experiments of Throbbing Gristle, it’s a wide spectrum of beats to hold the dance floor in motion. Recorded at home but in just one take, it should give you a good feel of what I do in the club. Shouts to all crew at NTS, my Standard Place peoples and all of you supporting Levels right now. And props to Ninja Tune for asking me to do this, thanks! – JR””

There is 12 exclusive unreleased Champion tracks that include remixes and collaborations, but we kick off with his track for the recent Hyperdub compilation and into his remix for Flava D which is forthcoming on his own Formula record label. Fanu + Mumdance – Solid Steel Show 2014-06-20

“Solid Steel (20th June) Fanu is our guest in Hour 1, an electronic music artist and DJ from Finland, who has been releasing music for many years,
plus remix duties that include Bill Laswell and our own Amon Tobin. In his own words;
“In addition to making/pushing/DJing broken beat music and running my label, Lightless, I’ve been working on loads of hip hop in the past 1.5 years, some of which will start to surface soon on Redefinition Records under my FatGyver alias. Hence, instead of going all electronic with the mix like I most often do, this time I wanted to go for the theme, “hip hop to D&B and back”. Hip hop and drum and bass used to have a lot in common, after all, and their aesthetics can be very similar.”
We welcome Mumdance in Hour 2 who has his ‘Take Time’ EP out now on Rinse. He had this to say about his mix;
“For my Solid Steel episode I wanted to make a weightless mix of drone, new age, dark ambient, shoegaze & experimental music. In my mind the prime listening situation is with headphones on, ideally looking out the window on any sort of transportation, or walking around on foot. Its music for travel. Over the hour it runs through a number of different emotions, arranged to let your mind drift as the scenery and sounds wash over you.””

Akkord + DJ Vadim – Solid Steel Show 2014-06-13

“Solid Steel (13th June) In Hour 1 this week we welcome Akkord ahead of the release of their new EP on the excellent Houndstooth label. The tracks Greyscale and Continuum from the EP feature in their mix, alongside music from Cloud Boat, Andy Stott, Shackleton and Kerridge. The deep and dark selection continues with unreleased music from Talk in Silence, plus tracks from Autechre and the Aphex Twin remix for Curve from 1993. HTH020 is released on 16th June on Houndstooth and is pressed on 180g grey wax, with debossed cover and postcard insert.
In Hour 2 our guest is DJ Vadim who first appeared on Solid Steel in 1996 back in the Kiss FM days and has featured regularly since. He steps up with a mix dedicated to his love of hip hop, reggae and dancehall, and for him ‘they are like brother and sister, children of the same parents, same struggles and desires. Different in production, but share so many things in common’. It’s another perfect mix for a hot day in London and features music from Yelloman, Roots Manuva, General Levy, Cutty Ranks and Top Cat, plus music from Vadim himself ahead of his new album Dubcatcher which is out on BBE next week.”

Addison Groove + Alex Banks – Solid Steel Show 2014-06-06

“Solid Steel (6th June) Addison Groove is our guest in Hour 1 with the most diverse mix he’s ever done and perfect for a sunny weekend. We kick off with a dubwise selection from Lee Perry, Augustus Pablo, King Tubby and Linval Thompson, then two from Angola, Dr Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band, Gil Scott Heron and Antibalas. Then it’s onto hip hop from LL Cool J, J Dilla and the classic Dilla produced ‘Drop’ by The Pharcyde. Finally we switch up to a Footwork selection including music from his friend Rashad RIP, The Dutty Inspectors and an EXCLUSIVE premiere for ‘Love Will Save’ by Addison Groove from his forthcoming ‘Turn up the Silence’ EP on Modeselektor’s label 50 Weapons.
In Hour 2 it’s a return for Alex Banks, who was the Solid Steel Mix of the Year winner in 2012 and now has a new album ‘Illuminate’ out on Monkeytown, another label run by Modeselektor. He tells us;
“Having spent a lot of time focussing on producing my new album recently, I’ve not recorded a DJ mix for a while so I wanted to put something together that includes some of my favourite tracks from sets I’ve played out in the past year or so, as well some of brand new stuff I’m really excited by at the moment. As the music I make is influenced by a wide range of styles, I’ve also tried to incorporate that into my DJ sets, so here you’ll find downtempo electronica mixed with full on dance floor smashers and everything between. There’s also a few tracks from the new album and an exclusive preview of my forthcoming release on the next Modeselektion Vol.3 compilation out 27th June.””

Pinch + Perera Elsewhere – Solid Steel Show 2014-05-30

“Solid Steel (30th May) In Hour 1 our guest is Pinch, with a vinyl selection spanning the years. He says about his mix;
“I wanted to take the opportunity to do something different for this Solid Steel mix and I decided to approach the mix as if I was ‘back from a good night out’ and winding down with some late night weird selections from my vinyl collection. The records were all pulled from my shelves on spur of the moment decisions – trying to dig out as many rare or vinyl-only riddims as I could along the journey. The result is a little self-indulgent and perhaps a bit random in places – but it’s something I’d enjoy listening to myself – so at least it’s honest..”
Meanwhile, in Hour 2 it’s Perera Elsewhere and she tells us;
‘Elsewhere can be a really moody & abstract place of musical refuge but there is definitely also a dancefloor there…this mix tries to incorporate all of that. In the end, the darkness of the dancefloor are a way of escaping the illusion that we call reality. At least it was for me having grown up in grimey London….doomed folk need doom folk and skanking dance music.”

Kowton + Stray – Solid Steel Show 2014-05-09

The Kowton mix is fucking ill. Highly recommended!
“Solid Steel (9th May) Hour 1 this week is from Kowton, the Bristol based producer and Livity Sound label owner (alongside Peveralist and Asusu). The mix opens with German experimental musician Conrad Schnitzler and loaded with unreleased gems. As Kowton says “The mix is a snapshot of the kind of thing I’ve been playing recently: stripped back rhythms that work on the floor. New Pangaea, MMM, Tessela, Surgeon and bunch of other good stuff. Beyond that there’s not much to say.”
The latest release on Livity Sound features Pev / Kowton remixed by Ghost-202 and Beneath.
Stray is our guest in Hour 2, fresh from remix duties on the new Kate Tempest single ‘The Beigness’, which features in this mix. There’s a whole host of tracks kicking off with Larry Fisherman, Erick Arc Elliott and Jon Wayne, followed by recent guests Moresounds, NameBrandSound, Darkhouse Fam and Deft . Then it’s our own Machinedrum, two from the sorely missed DJ Rashad RIP, Exit label mates Instru:mental and Fracture, plus two from Stray’s brand new Chatterbox EP which is out now on Exit Records.”

Moxie + Max Graef – Solid Steel Show 2014-05-02

“Solid Steel (2nd May) It’s a pleasure to welcome Moxie to Solid Steel who has her own show on the excellent NTS and also had a stint on Radio 1 in the ‘In New DJ’s We Trust’ slot. Her expansive knowledge and wide taste in music is reflected in her weekly shows. This mix takes us through a superb selection kicking off with a classic disco edit, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Actress, PhOtOmachine and the great Mos Def ‘Umi says’ edit on Falty DL’s Blueberry Records. Then it’s Drexciya from ’95, Seven Davis Jr, Martyn, Akkord, HNNY and ending on another disco classic, this time Triniadad’s Stephen Encinas from 1979.
Hour 2 hands over to Max Graef who has his debut album ‘Rivers of the red Planet’ out on Tartelet Records. It’s a deep vinyl selection heavy on the jazz, whilst touching on soul, disco, hip hop and assorted beats. No track list yet, but sit back or move the chairs back as we set you up for the Bank Holiday weekend.”

DK + DJ Food and Toddla T – Solid Steel Show 2013-11-29

“Solid Steel (29th November) Toddla T takes his turn to help celebrate our 25th birthday with a mix in his own unique style. The Steel City rudeboy drops a whole heap of brand new music with the Toddla T dub of Duppy by Timberlee kicking off the show, followed by Zouk Bass rhythms from KJ’s and Sandwich Island Bass out of Hawaii and Mark Pritchard with the excellent ‘Make a livin’. It’s more new tracks from Recloose and the first of two spins this week for Ashley Beedle with the Maddslinky remix of Saturday up first on Toddla’s own Girls Music label. Then it’s Donae’o, followed by M.I.A., Mr Mitch remixing Wiley and the sublime vocals of Sampha, all wrapped up with links and dub delays by a man like Toddla T.

In Hour 2 the countdown starts for the Solid Steel 25th Anniversary night at Fire in London with a mix from DK that features some of the artists playing including Mr Scruff, Robin Hexstatic, Four Tet and the new single from Illum Sphere. There’s more new music from Ninja Tune with forthcoming tracks from Falty DL, Beat Spacek and a Maya Jane Coles remix for Bonobo.
DJ Food steps up with a companion piece to last week’s 30 minute mix – Strictly Kev delves deeper and darker into ghostly electronic waters. An acoustic cover of Boards of Canada’s Reach For the Dead, V.I.V.E.K.’s stunning Mantra and Machinedrum’s Centre Your Love lighten the mood slghtly before we delve into witchcraft and sounds from abandoned buildings.”

Four Tet – Solid Steel Show 2013-11-01 two hour show

“This mix is made from unofficial edits and mixes. I guess these edits were mainly made to be played in clubs and I’ve always like the tradition of DJs extending and rearranging to make things work in their sets. Most of the edits here are unreleased because they are just tools for DJs really. The Black Unity one was done for the Solid Steel US tour that I did in 2001. Thanks to Daphni, Floating Points and Happa for the edits I got from them.”

Solid Steel Show 2013-01-18 Ben UFO, DK and Luke Vibert

“This week we feature a mix from Ben UFO celebrating the release of his Fabric Live CD. We kick off with Helm and a new track from Pev & Kowton on the Hessle Audio label that he runs alongside Pearson Sound and Pangaea. Then it’s onto the Mark Fell remix for Fennesz, Pairs from the excellent Daphni and a classic Nu Groove cut from N.Y. House’n Authority and a recent Planet E track from Carls Davis.
DK steps up to highlight forthcoming releases from the Ninja Tune family of labels. Big Dada is represented with tracks from new signing Vision, the grandaddy of UK hip hop Roots Manuva and the legendary Dobie. Falty DL features 4 times with tracks off his Hardcourage album on Ninja Tune, his remix of Dobie and remixed by Martyn. The Bug returns with the awesome Warrior Queen on Acid Ragga and Clark does a fine remix for Letherette, plus tracks from Lapalux on Brainfeeder and Moire on Werkdiscs.
We move into Hour 2 and for our 25th Anniversary we encouraged guests to deliver something different. This week Luke Vibert (who has appeared many times on the show) does exactly that with a high octane opening section showcasing the edit kings from the late eighties. Often found on the b-side of club records, editors such as Omar Santana, Carlos Berrios, Chep Nunez and the Latin Rascals transformed tracks with quick fire cuts for artists like Rochelle, Corina, Bad Boy Orchestra, Stone and Sweet Sensation who are all featured and we get a Luke Vibert treatment on top. Brand New Funk and Ethel Beatty offer a respite from all this, as well as a sublime gospel track from Pastor TL Barrett, before closing with Omar Souleyman, Tipper and Tomita.”

Solid Steel Show 2012-05-04 Coldcut, Hot Sugar and Slugabed

“Coldcut return and it’s a mellow start with new music from Australian artist Thrupence, Freddy Todd and Paper Tiger. The atmosphere continues with Portishead, Mr Lefteye and Jean Michel Jarre, but it’s just the clam before the storm as we unleash a torrent of rain influenced tracks from The Techniques, Blockhead, The White Stripes and Ann Peebles, to reflect the current weather situation in a wet UK.

Hour 2 opens with an epic mix from new Ninja signing Hot Sugar. Reworking nearly every track in the mix, we get Mozart meeting Ja rule, Jadakiss and Fat joe, heavy metal from Danzig, Greek legends Aphrodite’s Child and Cheap Trick, plus more hip hop and electronic treats all given the Hot Sugar stamp. We also get a taste of his forthcoming EP ‘Moon Money’ which is out on 14th May on Ninja Tune.
An interview with Slugabed wraps up the show as he discusses his new album Time Team with Jon More from Coldcut. We also hear a few tracks from the album and one of his influential tracks, a classic from Tyrone Brunson”

In hour 2 the DJ Moneyshot mix from May this year shone out for you, with classic hip-hop, pedigree funk and wobbly breaks. Music in the pot from Gramatik, Featurecast and Moneyshot’s Joe Driscoll remix, plus there’s tracks from Run DMC, Vent and DJ Quik.
It was the Ruckus Roboticus ‘Thanksgiving mix’ from November that was a favourite amongst listeners with a musical tribute to all the people and things Ruckus is thankful for everyday (not just on Thanksgiving!). In the mix, are soulful classics from Otis Redding and Spanky Wilson; funky classics from Sly and The Family Stone & Maceo And All The King’s Men; hip-hop from Afrika Bambaataa and Biz Markie; disco from Donald Byrd and William DeVaughn, plus jazz from Melvin Sparks RIP”
