6 Mix 2011-06-12 Ratcliffe from Basement Jaxx

“Simon Ratcliffe from Basement Jaxx takes over the 6 Mix, talking about his life in electronic and experimental music. Basement Jaxx need no introduction, having released number one albums, toured the world, headlined the Glastonbury Festival and – most recently – provided the soundtrack to 6 Music’s Joe Cornish’s debut feature film ‘Attack The Block’. However Simon actually started off as a solo producer, releasing his debut EP ‘City Dreams’ back in 1995. 16 years on and he finally releases the follow up ‘Dorus Rijkers’ this month, fusing psychedelic rock influences with his trademark contemporary electronic production. In this programme Simon explores his personal journey in music, playing and talking about how records by Frank Zappa, David Bowie and Aswad influenced his sound alongside early house music from Nuyorican Soul and contemporary electronica from Flying Lotus. Simon also tells the story behind his new EP and does a one hour mix which he describes as “a journey into my fantasy world.”.”

“Features a guest mix from progressive electronic production duo Africa Hitech. They are Mark Pritchard (of Harmonic313/Global Communications/Jedi Knights and many other pseudonyms) and Steve Spacek(of Spacek). The duo started working together when they met in Australia, and release their debut album ’93 Million Miles’ on Warp records on may 9. Tom will play a track that a listener found in a charity shop in the aptly titled ‘Charity Drop’. A listener selects a year and then picks 2 tracks from it and an object to put into the ‘Tom Capsule’.”

Solid Steel Show 2011-06-10 A La Fu and Strictly Kev

“This week we welcome A La Fu, the man behind many excellent mixtapes and podcasts for Big Dada. This mix for Solid Steel has been recorded as an accompaniment to A La Fu’s new release DJ Memoirs: Choose Your Own Adventure. The music on offer starts with Redinho, Traxman and plenty of Juke flavoured delights from Planet Mu. The beats drop down for True Tiger and Aardvarck, before taking it back up for tracks from Ramadanman, Seiji and Hot City, ending on ‘No Sympathy’ from Super Furry Animals. In hour 2 Strictly Kev presents his ‘Lynch Party mix Part 1’. Brendan Lynch is probably best known for his remixes and production work for the likes of Paul Weller, Primal Scream and Ocean Colour Scene. In his Lynchmob guise, alongside Max Heyesggggg, he’s arguably been responsible for the more experimental moments in these groups’ careers, taking tracks and twisting them inside out. In the first of two mixes, Strictly Kev collects the best of these for a downtempo set of heavy beats, dub and electronics, the modfather features on half of it but this is his most funky, out there material.”
