6 Mix 2011-07-17 Boy George in the mix

“Boy George takes over the 6 Mix playing set of club classics and future floorfillers. Having just celebrated his 50th birthday, George remains one of the most recognisable faces in UK music, with a music career spanning three decades, a club DJ career spanning two and a colourful personal life which has rarely seen him out of the tabloid press. Following last week’s extended 6 Mix interview with Dave Pearce about his life in dance music, George takes to the 6 Music decks for a two hour session of tunes from his twenty year career as a DJ encompassing rave, house and trance. Expect club classics from his time as a resident at Progress and Miss Moneypenny’s, a splattering of noughties Ibiza anthems from his time on the white isle and upfront new music from his record box that he’s playing out right now. You can also hear George’s in-depth 6 Mix interview with Dave Pearce to accompany this mix on the BBC iPlayer right now.”

Kutski 2010-07-15 Mokum Freerange Mix

“This week we’re revisiting a label we covered a while back, but there where so many great tracks – and this label has such a cult following, we just have to take a second look at the back catalogue. It’s a straight up Gabber label from Holland, set up in 1993 as a tongue-in-cheek response to the massive Rotterdam Records, as it’s name translates to ‘Amsterdam’. Most of the releases where over 200bpm, but the key to the label’s success, even though there where some landmark tracks on the label, was it never took itself too seriously, with gabber remixes of Happy Birthday, Abba (a track called Abba-Gabber) and, of course, Technoheads “I wanna be a hippy” – which got to #6 in the UK charts in 1996. I won’t lie to you, this is one of those marmite sounds you’ll either love or hate, but I can promise you won’t forget it any time soon! These are the sounds of Mokum Records on Radio 1!!!”

Solid Steel Show 2011-07-15 Stagga, Goldie and DK

“This week’s mix features Stagga from Rag & Bone Records, who has already had tracks from his excellent album “The Warm Air Room” played on the show. We start with The Weeknd and the RnB tinged ‘The Morning’, with funky beats from CRST close behind. Classic techno from Sweet Exorcist on Warp keeps it dark and then into the first Stagga track ‘Prehistoric UFO rhythm’, followed by music from Starkey, Ramadanman, Debruit and the twisted sounds of Death Grips. Then it’s a couple from DJ Roc and more productions and remixes from Stagga to close the first hour. In hour 2 Metalheadz don Goldie drops a mix to celebrate the release of his Fabric Live mix CD and it’s straight in with the soulful vibe of Marcus Intalex & ST Files and D Kay & Lee. Then it’s back to ’94 with Dillinja and we continue in a 90?s vein with Boymerang, Doc Scott and classic Goldie, before closing with Rufige Kru. DK steps in to close the show with a look at recent and upcoming tracks from the vast Ninja Tune, Big Dada, Counter and Brainfeeder stable. Tracks from the Samiyam and Wiley albums are followed by the Two Fingers mix of Amon Tobin’s new single ‘Surge’. Mr Scruff is on ‘Wobble control’ and Toddla T gets an Andrew Wetherall remix on ‘Watch me dance’ with Roots Manuva’s version shortly after. Then it’s forthcoming singles from Martyn, Raffertie and Offshore before ending on the accoustic sounds of Jono McCleery and Fink.”
