1Xtra’s Stories 2011-12-04 Classic UK Clubs, Episode 1

Also check out Episode 2 here.
“Over two episodes, Ronnie Herel looks at the last three decades of UK club culture and selects six club nights that had a genuine impact on the world.
Part one covers three nights: Soul II Soul at the Africa Centre; The Wild Bunch at The Dug Out; and Goldie’s 1990s drum ‘n’ bass club Metalheadz.
We start out in London in the 1980s with Jazzie B’s Soul II Soul night at the Africa Centre. Jazzie and Rose ‘Fairplay’ Windross take us there, whilst author Lloyd Bradley explains how this was the first club to take soundsystem culture into the West End, creating a genuinely multi-racial club at a time when many clubbers faced racist door policies.
We head to Bristol and find out about how punks and dreads hung out together at The Wild Bunch’s club nights. We see how the club helped turn this group of DJs into a world-famous band, Massive Attack, and we hear from Goldie, who went to the club, that this place laid the foundations for today’s clubs.
The final half hour takes us right onto the middle of the dancefloor at Metalheadz. We hear how jungle and drum ‘n’ bass developed and we see how Goldie’s club took an underground scene and blew it up worldwide. We hear from Goldie, Doc Scott, MC Cleveland Watkiss, as well as other DJs and clubbers, who bring the vibes and explain why Metalheadz changed everything – and influenced the next generation.
Finally, we find out what where we’ll be next time, hearing about three clubs that created new genres: grime-incubator Sidewinder, bassline house HQ Niche and the home of dubstep, FWD.”

6 Mix 2011-12-04 Erol Alkan

“Erol Alkan returns to the 6 Mix, taking you on a sonic journey through bleeps, beats and bass from the cutting edge of club culture.
A much loved and respected figure on the UK electronic music circuit, Erol’s early Noughties club night Trash was earlier this year named number 43 in the Guardian’s 50 Key Events In the History Of Dance Music supplement. In his last 6 Mix of 2011, Erol delves into the crates to unearth a selection of hidden gems, alongside a selection of upfront electronic and experimental sounds from inside and outside the club.
In the final 30 minutes, Erol’s Mystery Mix returns, with a secret selection of future floorfillers which could well be the soundtrack to 2012’s festival season.”

Resident Advisor Exchange podcast RA.EX065 Lillevan

“The visual artist talks about his varied career.
Morton Subotnick. Fennesz. Deadbeat. Vladislav Delay. What do all of these names have in common? They all have gone to Lillevan at one point or another to provide the live visual accompaniment to their music. The Irish-born, Berlin-dwelling artist is an improviser in the same way as his musical counterparts, an aesthetic that perhaps had its fullest flowering in experimental duo Rechenzentrum. But ever since its dissolution in the ’00s, Lillevan has pushed forward to create stunning shows that go far beyond the usual VJ cliché. Seeing as he is as quick with his wit as he is with his visuals, RA caught up with Lillevan earlier this month to explore the non-musical side of the techno world. ”

Solid Steel Show 2011-12-02 Hexstatic and DJ Irk

“Robin Hexstatic back in the mix again this week. We start off with classic Angie Stone,..remixed twice, first by Gatto Viola and then beefed up by Doc Daneka and on into some vintage house from Karen Pollack remixed by the mighty Murk. Julio Bashmore’s inimitable ‘Battle for middle you’ mixes nicely into some more vintage house,..this time the classic ‘Break Of Dawn’ from Rhythm On The Loose. Bang up to date now with Dauwd’s ‘Ikopol’, new Martyn with the epic ‘We Are You In The Future’ and a Hexstatic favorite – Akira Kiteshi with the bulging bass of ‘Transmission’. Fourtet’s lovely remix of Caribou brings us down nicely for a bit, before we slam into new Ninja Tune signing Starkey with ‘Villagers’. It’s more from the label courtesy of 16 Bit’s remix of Amon Tobin’s ‘Surge’, then the brilliant Amen heavy remix of Africa Hitech leads into the Transformers sampling drumstep of Heist, before we mellow things down with Isotroph and another fave beatsmith,..George Lenton, with On Repeat.
In hour 2 DJ Irk presents his ‘Too much pressure’ mix kicking off in his typical style with a sample heavy spoken word intro and onto some chunky west-coast beats from favourites illGates and Bassnectar, then transition through funk and blues and on to a few rocky beats from Kid Koala and DJ Shadow. Picking up the pace we move on to some funky midtempo sounds, including Dave Nada and Tipper, then finally out to new fLako wonkiness and low-end from Gatekeeper, Joker and Halp.”
