Solid Steel Show 2012-09-21 Coldcut, DJ Irk and Mr Scruff

“More carnival vibes from Coldcut this week, starting with a heavy reggae selection from Courtney Melody, Ninjaman and Poison Chang who are joined by Om Unit, Ty & Roots Manuva and Hudson Mohawke. We hit double time with Enei, Dub Phizix and Guardians of Dalliance from 96, then two from Greensleeves with Mr Vegas and Admiral Bailey, before closing with The Bug, The Qemists and Dream Continuum.
DJ Irk steps in with a driving party mix with musical offerings from Todd Terje, Two Fingers, Captain Planet and hitting funky afrobeat flavours with Javi P3z Orqueta, ending with Bobby Byrd setting us up nicely for our guest in hour 2.
It’s a welcome return for our guest Mr Scruff in the second hour. Having previously released his own Solid Steel mix CD, he delivers another trade mark mix crossing the globe in search of the funkiest, soulful, house, and afro selections of the highest quality. In the pot, it’s tracks from Charles Wright, Theo Parrish, Andres, Orchestra Baobab and Funk E, all mixed to perfection.”

Solid Steel Show 2011-12-16 DK and DJ Irk

“Solid Steel in association with Serato (16th December) We continue with the second part of Cymatic Frequencies II by DK, the Video Mixtape reviewing some of his favourite mixes from this year with added visuals. Using more Original Videos from the artist this time and the quality of the music is equally as good as Part 1. It’s a sombre start with Gil Scott-Heron RIP, followed by James Blake and hip hop from Paul White, Danny Brown and Shabazz Palaces. Ninja Tune feature with Mr Scruff, Toddla T, Raffertie and Fink, with Big Dada represented by Wiley & Offshore. There’s 2 from Martyn on Brainfeeder, Zed Bias features 3 times and it’s big club tracks from Joe Goddard, Julio Bashmore and Fourtet. Plus there’s a few classics from Liquid Liquid, Radiohead and Har You Percussion group to close a visual feast.
The votes are in, polling stations closed and for the second year, DJ Irk gets your vote for Mix of the Year. He cropped up a few times in 2011, but it was his mix from March that was the most popular with some bone crunching beats from the likes of Broken Note, Bassnectar and our very own King Cannibal. Then on to some electro-hip hop flavours, showcasing sounds from Dizz1, Cherry Chan and Kiat, plus music from Machinedrum, Bonobo and Modeselektor all mixed to the highest standard. Take another listen.”

Solid Steel Show 2011-12-02 Hexstatic and DJ Irk

“Robin Hexstatic back in the mix again this week. We start off with classic Angie Stone,..remixed twice, first by Gatto Viola and then beefed up by Doc Daneka and on into some vintage house from Karen Pollack remixed by the mighty Murk. Julio Bashmore’s inimitable ‘Battle for middle you’ mixes nicely into some more vintage house,..this time the classic ‘Break Of Dawn’ from Rhythm On The Loose. Bang up to date now with Dauwd’s ‘Ikopol’, new Martyn with the epic ‘We Are You In The Future’ and a Hexstatic favorite – Akira Kiteshi with the bulging bass of ‘Transmission’. Fourtet’s lovely remix of Caribou brings us down nicely for a bit, before we slam into new Ninja Tune signing Starkey with ‘Villagers’. It’s more from the label courtesy of 16 Bit’s remix of Amon Tobin’s ‘Surge’, then the brilliant Amen heavy remix of Africa Hitech leads into the Transformers sampling drumstep of Heist, before we mellow things down with Isotroph and another fave beatsmith,..George Lenton, with On Repeat.
In hour 2 DJ Irk presents his ‘Too much pressure’ mix kicking off in his typical style with a sample heavy spoken word intro and onto some chunky west-coast beats from favourites illGates and Bassnectar, then transition through funk and blues and on to a few rocky beats from Kid Koala and DJ Shadow. Picking up the pace we move on to some funky midtempo sounds, including Dave Nada and Tipper, then finally out to new fLako wonkiness and low-end from Gatekeeper, Joker and Halp.”

Solid Steel Show 2011-03-25 DJ Irk, Pearson Sound and DK

“Irk steps back up to the Solid Steel decks for the first time since winning last year’s MOTY title, bringing with him his usual knack for juxtaposing quality track sequences with detailed scratch prowess and absurd sampling. He sets up with another signature hiphop intro, then makes a break for some bone-crunching beats from the likes of Broken Note, Bassnectar and our very own King Cannibal. Then it’s on to some electro-hiphop flavours, showcasing a bunch of great new sounds from friendly producers the world over, including Dizz1, Cherry Chan and Kiat, and irk’s Montreal-based pal Living Stone. Throw in a Bonobo track from the NinjaTune XX celebrations and a couple of UK hiphop giants on the way then it’s over to the dubstep and breaks for a solid landing. In Hour 2, Pearson Sound celebrates the release of his Fabric Live CD this week with a mix showcasing just some of the tracks from the mix. Also known as Ramadanman, we get to hear music from both moniker’s alongside tracks from joy o, Randomer and Kode9 & spaceape. DK continues in a similar vein with Boddika and the Sepalcure remix of Tailor-made by Deadelus, before taking it right down with more from Matthewdavid, recent guest Jonny Faith and two Blue Note classics from Alphonse Mouzon and the sublime ‘Harlem River Drive’ by Bobbi Humphrey.”

Solid Steel Show 2010-01-15 DJ IRK, Production Unit and DK

“Solid Steel in association with Serato (January 15th) This week DJ Irk takes to the decks, fresh from playing with our man Cheeba in the Alps. A mix that cuts up everything in sight has Foreign Beggars, Mr. Scruff, The Beach Boys, The Prodigy and the Average White Band all jostling for space.
Hour 2 starts with Producion Unit, one of Glasgow’s best kept secrets. Brimming with off kilter electronica, slow slung bass riddims and future hip hop of the highest quality with music from Flying Lotus, The Pharcyde , Harmonic 313 and J Dilla straight from your speakers.
DK wraps up the show with a mix of the new Blockhead album titled “The music Scene”. It’s his 3rd album and he has always made beautiful, emotive music based around the hip hop template, but on ‘The Music Scene’ he elevates his craft to another level.”
